INTERVIDA GUATEMALA ASSOCIATION General Profile Presentation Slide 2 VISION Help millions of underprivileged families, who have long been marginalized, by giving them the opportunity to access the material and intellectual developmental resources to which they are entitled. Slide 3 MISSION We are an institution that provides the knowledge, human resources and material resources necessary for populations caught in the spiral of poverty to succeed in overcoming their situation, through a model of participatory planning and development. Based on participation, respect for local cultures and an integrated, long-term sustainability plan, we generate a strategy which will build valuable skills in the community to address the most critical issues, enabling our beneficiaries to become self-sufficient in their ability to manage both their resources and maintain a healthy pace in their development. Slide 4 We serve the poorest populations in rural Mayan areas through out the western highlands of Guatemala. We reach 61 municipalities in 8 departments of the region, serving as a strategic hub for 1,820 schools in 1,715 communities. Since 1996, we have benefited over 335,000 children and their families. Slide 8 The productive or production sector is the beginning of a long-term sustainable development process, providing support through technical assistance, counseling and training to improve agricultural and crafts production, services and natural resource management in rural populations. We work to promote and strengthen community self- management aimed at achieving the "Empowerment and Sustainability of a positive Production and Economic Process." Intervidas production sector began in Guatemala in 1997 and currently covers Livestock, Agriculture, Services, Crafts and Natural Resources. Groups whose level of organization, skills and infrastructure, enable them to fully participate as part of the international productive chain, from the acquisition or growth of raw materials to the exportation of high quality manufactured and branded goods. Program activities and coordination have tended to be developed and implemented through community and public school bases. Programs based out of community and public school sites offer direct access to medical care as well as preventive health care and education. This combination of response and prevention can be key both in reducing morbidity in the general population and in preventing school absenteeism due to illness or malnourishment. Communities benefit then by improving health status and safeguarding the learning capacity of students.
