Transcript of Intervention Design workshop #3 at MAMDT Maastricht
intervention design: identifying the area of interest
last week: modernity versus postmodernity
warming up: short assignment about design - back in one hour
•what is a designer? •what is the role of a designer? •what should be the role of a designer?
steven mccarthy - the designer as… (2013)
Intervention Design Process Model (IDPM)
1. Select and analyse an area of interest. 2. Apply theory and describe the clash between
the old and new paradigms. 3. Identify the problem in terms of environment,
media and target group. 4. Investigate how the problem would be solved
using normal/current design. 5. Investigate how the problem would be solved
using new ideas and insights. 6. Compare both and design an intervention. 7. Test and evaluate the intervention design.

tool #1: trend piramide

tool #2: DESTEP
try to fill in DESTEP for city gardening
2. apply theory
you can use mcluhan’s advice: don’t drown in the media mahlström
observe, take distance, find patterns
laws of media tetrad (1988)
laws of media used with iPad
Enhances: brain, central
nervous system, directness,
nonlinearity, simultaneous,
always on
Obsolesces: hierarchy, linearity,
objectivityRetrieves: acoustic space, togetherness,
tribes, network
Reverses: anomy, void, nothingness,
hyperreal
try to use the four laws of media with city gardening
!!
• brainstorm about interesting developments in our current society
• select an area you are going to research • use trend piramide and DESTEP to describe
that area • use media theory to describe the area in depth
and where the world is heading to • describe the paradigms of our current world
and of the new world (and their clash) !
now take steps #1 and #2 of IDPM
remember: you haven’t choose a problem/situation yet! that’s step #3
homework? see blog!
