What is Intertextuality?

Intertextuality is the relationship between texts.

Some texts refer directly to each other for example parodies of films

Other examples of intertextuality include: mimicking of other texts, Making reference to other texts and marketing them, Media performers working in more than one media form and Reviews of media texts in other media forms.

Why is intertextuality used?

Including something familiar to the audience in a media text can potentially arouse feelings of nostalgia and create new meanings for the audience.

It may also create a sense of continuity and reality in the texts.

The Simpsons use intertextuality of society to relate with the audience and perhaps create controversy around a political topic.

Intertextuality in a music video

Madonna’s Video for Material Girl used intertextuality, referring to Gentlemen prefer Blonde’s (a 1953 film). She wore a similar dress and the video is a clear mimic of the film. This could be because the film is famous and the scene is iconic so it creates nostalgia and a link to media in the past.

Intertextuality in my own video I may use references to themes and patterns/colours in

Tame Impala music video’s as it shows continuity of the genre and makes it recognisable.

People who listen to this genre may also like tame impala and enjoy the links.
