Description and ApplicationCutler-Hammer Magnum Air Circuit Breakers are designed andengineered specifically for use in Metal Enclosed Switchgearassemblies applied at nominal voltages of 380/415, 440, and500/690 Vac. Ten continuous ratings – 800 through 6300 ampere,are covered by only two breaker sizes. A new Narrow Frame isalso available for even greater space savings through 2000A.

The breakers are 100% rated and are built and tested in an ISO9001 certified facility to applicable standards including EN60947-2.

Magnum air circuit breakers feature high interrupting and short-time ratings in small physical frame sizes. Interrupting ratings from40 kA to 100 kA are available.

The Magnum utilizes a true two-step stored energy mechanism formanually and electrically operated breakers. The potential energyis stored in the mechanism to close the breaker in 5 cycles or less.Sufficient energy to open the breaker remains available followingthe closing operation.

After closing, the charging spring can be recharged to providepotential energy for reclosing following a fault, providing highcontinuity of service. This feature allows for the followingsequence: charge-close-recharge-open-close-open.

On manually operated breakers, closing springs are charged byhand. For electrically operated breakers, springs are charged byan electric motor but can be manually charged if no power is available.

Power conductors are insulated and isolated in an engineeredcomposite resin frame that provides protection to personnel infront of the breaker. The levering-in device includes a safetyinterlock which prevents the door from being opened when thebreaker is in the closed position. The breaker cannot bewithdrawn when energized.

The advanced family of Digitrip RMS programmable trip unitswere designed exclusively for Magnum. It uses provenmicroprocessor trip unit technology to provide expandedprotection and information capabilities.

True RMS sensing trip units provide accurate coordination withthe conductors and equipment the breaker is designed to protect.Basic protection is offered in the Digitrip RMS 220, 520, 520M and520MC. Advanced protection is offered in the Digitrip RMS 1150which can be programmed at the faceplate or with a PC.

The Digitrip RMS 220 provides long time and instantaneousprotection only.

The Digitrip RMS 520 enables the user as many as nine phase andearth current protection settings for maximum flexibility in trip-curve shaping and multi-unit coordination, and adds earth currentprotection settings.

The Digitrip RMS 520M adds phase, neutral, and earth currentmetering in a four character LCD display window.

The Digitrip RMS 520MC includes all of the capabilities of the520M trip unit as well as communications capability.

The Digitrip RMS 1150 provides programmability for moresophisticated distribution systems. It incorporates systemsmonitoring information including power factor, voltage, current,harmonic distortion values, and waveform capture with a threeline (eight character) LED display. In addition, this trip unit has twoprogrammable contacts, time stamping of trip events, 1%accuracy on metered values and 2% on energy and power,systems diagnostics and IMPACC/PowerNet communications.

A common family of accessories are available to fit all breakerframe sizes. Magnum through-the-window accessories areinstalled near the right front of the breaker. The unique windows inthe breaker cover enable accessories to be quickly identified byname and rating. These accessories are plug-in, providing foreasy mounting and wiring to save both installation time and cost.Spring release, shunt trip and undervoltage release are offered asfactory installed options or they can be easily mounted in the fieldby user personnel. Internal accessories include auxiliary switches(up to 6 NO and 6 NC contacts), overcurrent trip switch (Bellalarm) and an electrical operator can also be mounted at thefactory or in the field.
