CLOSE RELATIONSHIP: FRIENDS AND ROMANTIC PARTNER
At one extreme, initial feelings of attraction can blossom into a lifelong close friendship or even into highly intimate romantic relationships such as marriage.
FRIENDSHIP AND LONELINESS• FriendshipBeginning in childhood, most of us establish casual friendships with several others of about the same age who share common interests, and also from a close friendship with just one person.
• LonelinessMost people place a high value on establishing relationships, but many have difficulty in achieving that goal.Loneliness is associated with negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, unhappiness, dissatisfaction, and shyness.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP AND CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS.
Some aspects of romantic interaction differ from other relationships. That is, we generally want to be with someone who knows us well enough to understand our best and our worst characteristics.
Early in such a relationship, at least, two people are not committed to one another and aren’t looking for self-validation. Rather, they are looking for acceptance and want to like and to be liked, hoping most all for compliments and praise. In effect, people go out to have fun, and they are on their best behavior.
What is Love ?
WHAT IS LOVE?• Love is one of the most common themes in our songs, movies, and
everyday lives.• American adults revealed that almost three out of four say that they are
currently “in love”. What do they mean when they say that? One possibility is that a friendship between a man and a woman is redefined as a loving relationship when the two people begin to perceive themselves as potential sexual partners.
