Create the ISM Repository

In this exercise, you will learn how to create an ISM Repository from a an AECOsim Building Designer structural model. When the ISM Repository is created, the following information should be specified for each type of structural member in the model.

Type: Displays the Structural Building Designer member DataGroup catalog Type (Family/Part) information. Part definitions contain the Structural Data information, and are defined in the DataGroup System.

Instance: Displays the Structural Building Designer member DataGroup catalog Name (section type) information. Structural Building Designer members are selected from DataGroup catalogs.

ISM Use: Displays the closest ISM member definitions that can be mapped to the outgoing Structural Building Designer member definitions.

Note: Bentley’s Integrated Structural Model (ISM) is a technology for sharing structural engineering project information among structural modeling, analysis, design, drafting and detailing applications.

Materials: The steel and concrete materials were applies as specified by the Grade parameter (in AECOsim Building Designer.)

4. In STAAD.Pro, you must complete the rest of the structural model and perform the analysis/design:

Model: Model plate elements (walls and slabs) in STAAD.Pro.

Specifications: Add any additional structural specifications that are required to affect the behavior of the model (i.e. Tension-only specification)

Loading: Add any load cases, load items, and load definitions required for this model.

Analysis Commands: Add the appropriate analysis command to the model (i.e. P-Delta Analysis).

Design Parameters and Commands: Add the appropriate concrete and steel design parameters and commands.

Define the Member Attributes

In this exercise, you will learn how to define the member attributes using the following command:

Add Member Attributes command

When a STAAD.Pro model is exported to ISM, all collinear members with the same cross section and orientation will automatically be joined to form one physical member. To prevent this from occurring, use the Add Member Attribute command to ensure the collinear members are exported as separate physical members.

1. Continue with the model from the previous exercise.

2. In the menu bar, click Select > Beams Parallel to > Y and then click Select > Beams Parallel to > Z.

Note: For this model, all of the infill beams and girders will act continuously across the supporting columns when the model is exported to ISM. To ensure the infill beams and girders are broken at the correct locations, we will assign the Add Member Attributed command to the girders and columns (the supporting members).

3. In the Main Window, right-click and select Add Member Attributes from the pop-up menu.

4. In the Member Attribute dialog, enter the following information:

Attribute Name: STRUCLINK

Attribute Values: BREAK_MEMBER_ACCROSS

Then, click Apply.
