    Highlights of My InternshipPart II: Student Veteran Project

    This is the Veterans Affairs (VA) office on campus.From my interview with the VA supervisor, I learned

    that 475 student veterans received benefits from the

    GI Bill in the fall of 2009.

    Student Veterans of Utah (SVU) is a student group

    on campus. It has an account in facebook. Aftercorresponding for some time with Amber Anderton,

    chair of SVU (2009-10) via email, I was finally able to

    meet her in person at the first meeting of SVU in

    August 2009. Amber is a veteran of the OIF

    (Operation Iraqi Freedom).

    Benchmarks

    On April 22, 2009, the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Wal-Mart Foundation awarded $2

    million in Success for Veterans Award Grants to 20 institutions across the U.S. These institutions, chosen

    out of nearly 250 applications, were presented with $100,000 each for operating model programspromoting access and success in higher education for veterans and their families. Below are a few of

    the recipients and their model programs. Please click on thisrecipientlink to see all the 20 institutions.

    Sacramento

    Create a Veterans Education Transition Success Program, including

    college assimilation summer program, academic advising, and fall

    orientation.

    Fairleigh Dickinson University Develop and implement an integrated veterans services model to

    enhance one-stop support and expand capacity to provide psychological

    services.

    Southwestern College Establish a Veterans Welcome Center to provide more comprehensivecounseling, support services, job placement and faculty development.

    Trident Technical College Create Project VETS (Veterans Educational Transition Services) to

    provide a continuum of services from pre-college through graduation,

    including veterans-specific orientation program, faculty and staff

    development, veterans task force creation, and veterans student club.

    University of Maryland

    University College

    Develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate a veterans service

    model that integrates comprehensive services into a web-based

    platform.

    Reflection:

    This was a memorable day for me. I have been looking forward to this day--the Veterans Day Commemoration--

    because my internship research is centered on student veterans . . . I couldnt help but be filled with gratitude forthese brave soldiers whose acts saved their fellowmen and their country.

    Excerpts from my journal, November 11, 2009

    I attended a panel discussion on advances in medical and psychological treatments for veterans. Topics such as

    post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and neuroprostheses (artificial limbs with nerve sensors) were discussed. On

    the panel were a medical doctor, a medical engineer, a psychologist and a military leader.

    Eleven Utah veterans were honored today. Eight of

    them fought in World War II, two served during the

    Vietnam War, and one served in World War II and

    the Korean War.
