Tasks performed by a Radio Producer
Content Management
On a day-to-day basis a Radio Producer has to provide content to the Radio Jockeys.
Content writing is one of the most important works a Radio Producer has to perform
for each show and daily. Whatever content the Radio Producer provides, the Radio
Jockeys converts it into a Radio segment. Radio Jockeys brings life into the content
provided and presents it in his/her own way. Each Radio Show will have its own
unique segment or sponsors or target groups; therefore the Radio Producer has to
collect information based on each segment.
Sources of obtaining Content
The Radio Producer has to assimilate the content from various channel or sources.
The content is not obtained from only few sources. Its need vast resources.
The news can be gathered through various methods and sources like,
Internet
Television
Newspapers
Magazines
Head Office
Monitoring other stations
Word of mouth
A list of all the sources are provided in the Appendix A
4/19/2023Internship Report - RadioONE FM 94.3For Christ College, Bangalore.
8
The information provided by the sources may contain some redundant or excess data
too. Therefore a careful scanning and surfing the above sources is performed, and the
best and the most appropriate news has to be selected and must be complied in a
document called the Information Bites.
Information Bites is a document, which contains all the information that has to
be provided to the Radio Jockeys. Some times even paper cutting or photocopies are
made of the article, which is newsworthy and attached with the Information Bites
document. It is prepared on a daily basis. All the information and news gathered have
to be classified into various genres like,
Movies – Bollywood and Sandalwood
Most listeners want to know the latest happenings of tinsel town. The film
news is one of the most heard and interesting news. The segments of the
Radio shows are based on the news of the Hindi and Kannada Film Industry.
Therefore a lot of research has to be done in gathering these segments.
Headlines – Local, Regional, National and International
This is a story or news that represents the mass audience, who want to know
what is happening internationally, nationally, inside the state or the city. This
contains a very relevant issue or an event that has occurred very recently. But
the news or the story is not presented in the exact same manner as some
issues can be serious. So the Radio Producer has to provide a different angle
to the story, which is informative and humorous.
Lifestyle
This is a type of news, which gives information about some latest trends in
fashion, health, house keeping, electronic gadgets, sales or discounts or
exhibition of products and services, and many more.
Sports
This contains the news all the latest happenings of the Sports world. More
emphasis is stressed on cricket, tennis, F1 and football due to their popularity

in India. It may have information on the results of the matches, the timely
scores, future matches and other related information.
Obscure or Bizarre
Everyone wants to listen to abnormal things than normal things. Obscure or
Bizarre news are listened with more curiosity, so providing such news is very
important. This news is just for the entertainment and fun and cannot be taken
seriously.
Trivia or Did You Know
This news is also very similar to the previous but these are more informative.
This news will surely ring the bell in the listeners mind providing some facts
that were never explored or understood.
Interviews
Many times interviews are conducted by Radio Jockeys on celebrities or
politicians, therefore a good research has to be done so ask the right questions
are to be asked and for the right occasion too.
Life history and Facts of a Celebrity
Celebrities are always in news so its good to have some more insight into
their life as it can add more value to any news segment. Some times a
birthday of a Celebrity may carry more listeners so the Radio Jockey has to
take more about the Celebrity as the listeners are curious to know more about
their favorites. Things like their schooling, hobbies, favorites which include
color, food, clothes, destination, song etc.
Contests
All Radio stations conduct contest on a regular basis and give out gifts too.
Therefore even questions are to be prepared and provided to the Radio
Jockey.
A sample of an Information bites is provided in the Appendix B.

Pitching in the News to the Radio Jockeys and Programming Director
All the information or news collected must have to be approved by the Radio Jockey and
the Programming Director. So a discussion with them is to be conducted where the
Producer has to Pitch his stories. In this session, the Producer has to explain the story and
the angle by which it will be presented On-air and the Radio Jockey and the
Programming Director will take a decision on the story which can be aired. This
discussion is necessary as mentioned earlier a Radio station follows a format and has a
specific Target Group and also may have any political inclination and the stories have to
cater to all these parameters. Finally, after a round of discussion, some stories may get
approved and some rejected or even postponed for further dates. These approved stories
will be inserted into the into the Programming flow of that particular show.
4/19/2023Internship Report - RadioONE FM 94.3For Christ College, Bangalore.
11
Preparation of Programming Flow Chart
After the discussion with the Radio Jockey and Programming Director, the stories
approved are inserted into Programming Flow Chart. They are placed with respect to the
timings and the segments. Each Radio Jockeys has his/her own Programming Flow Chart.
Programming Flow Chart is a document, which has details of all the segments and their
respective stories of the show, which are chronologically arranged with respect to the
exact time when each segment will be aired. It is handed over to the Radio Jockey and
based on the information provided in this document, the Radio Jockey presents the show.
It contains all the details of the stories, contests, promos and recordings.
A sample of a Programming Flow Chart is provided in the Appendix C.

Production
Recording
Many segments in a Radio show will require Recordings. The recording can be of the
listeners, callers, contest participants or contest winners or sometimes even the voice of
the Radio Jockeys. Most Recordings are performed by the Radio Producer and sometimes
in the presence of the Radio Jockey. These recordings are specific to each Radio Show,
therefore based on the theme a recording is performed.
Firstly, the person whose voice is to be recorded has to be intimated and also brief
him/her about the reason as to the need of his/her voice. Sometimes the Radio Producer
has even script the speaker’s dialogues and statements so as to make it sound good on
Radio. All recordings do not come out perfectly on the first attempt, so many attempts are
made and the speaker may have to repeat a couple of times. There may be long pauses or
usage of a politically incorrect word, thought or a statement too, or the other
disturbances. Therefore, after recording the Sound bites, it has to be edited so that the
sound bite is ready to be aired.
Editing of these Sound bites can be performed using softwares like SONY Sound
Forge, SONY Vegas or DAD. The length of these Sound bites has to be as per the
requirement of the segment. After editing, they have to be named with a particular code
called the CUT ID and each code is unique for a particular Radio show. Later, the CUT
IDs are uploaded into the DAD software, which is the software used by the Live Studio.
The details of the CUT IDs have to be informed to the Radio Jockey so that the Radio
Jockey known when to play the particular Sound bite.

13
Types of Recordings
There are many segments that needs recording of voices, jingles and opinions. This is
specific to each Radio segment, as each show will have unique concepts. On a day-to-
day basis these recordings are performed and the same has to be edited.
1. Birth-Day Bakra
In this segment a person whose birthday falls on the same day will be contacted
through the telephone and fooled. This person is called as the Birthday Bakra in
the terms of RadioONE show. The Radio Producer has to provide a Birthday
Bakra everyday through his/her sources and he/she has to get all possible details
of the person. Radio Producer also has to find out the right time to call the subject.
Usually the Radio Producer in the presence of the Radio Jockey will call
the subject and will make the Radio Jockey to ask some weird and irrational
questions and irritate the subject. Finally, the Radio Jockey discloses his identity
and wishes the subject on behalf of the Radio station and also promises him a gift
voucher.
Now, the Radio Producer will have to edit this conversation and convert it
into a Sound bite that can be played in the Radio show. It has to fit in the time
provided for the segment. After editing, it has to be composed into a Capsule and
also a Teaser. A Capsule is a Sound bite, which with the actual conversation also
has the music and certain special effects, which are pre defined for this particular
segment. The Capsule is played in the actual segment. A Teaser is a Sound bite,
which is shorter in length and contains only the response of the Birthday Bakra
greeting all the listeners on-air. The Teaser is played before and after the show
and is intended to invite the listeners and make them curious about that segment.

effort. The intent of this section is to bring out the efficacy of the deed and also
inspire the listeners to follow the same and help change the world and make it a
better place. This is more or less like an interview.
The Radio Producer has to on day-to-day basis get such individuals who
can contribute to the segment. All the details of the individual have to be obtained
and proper research has to be performed to assess his authenticity. Also draft
suitable questions, so that the Radio Jockey knows what to ask and what not to

17
Management of the Contests
Contests are a very regular happening at any Radio station. Therefore a lot of importance
is stressed on them. They also help in increases the popularity of a Radio station. There
are various steps in managing a Contest:
1. Identification or initiation of a Contest
Most contests are either identified by a Radio Producer or sponsored by Clients or
Advertisers. A Radio Producer has to be constantly looking for avenues for
conducting contests by means of celebrities birthdays, anniversaries, special
events, movie releases or sporting events. Clients or Advertisers also sponsor
contests to promote their brand.
2. Preparation of the questions for the Contest
Appropriate questions have to be provided for the contest and with correct
answers. The questions must have relevance and must be related to the concept of
the contest.
3. Execution of the contests
Contests are to be scheduled for certain Radio shows and the respective Radio
Jockey is informed about the same. The Radio Jockey has to be briefed about the
contest and the rules of the contest and the sponsors and the gifts too.
4. Arrangement of gifts
This is one of the most important part of conducting a contest as the participants
participate in the intention of winning the gifts and the gifts have to be equally
attractive and interesting.
4/19/2023Internship Report - RadioONE FM 94.3For Christ College, Bangalore.
18
Firstly, the Radio Producer has to allocate funds for the gifts and then get
the approval from the Programming Director. Then the Radio Producer has to
decide what gift has to be given for the winners. If the contest is sponsored by
Clients or Advertisers, the gifts are also determined by them.
After the decision is taken on the gifts the Radio Producer has to visit the
places where these gifts are available and has to secure them.
E.g.
o Contests for the Birthdays or Anniversaries of celebrities may have gifts like
CDs or DVDs of the movies of the celebrities.
o Some general contests may have gift coupons from shops or food vouchers
from restaurants.
o Some contests may be based on the premiere of movies, so movie tickets have
to be arranged.
5. Intimation and delivery of the gifts to winners
The Radio Jockey will conduct the contest and will select the winner. The Radio
Jockey will take all the details of the contest winner and hand it over to the Radio
Producer. The Radio Producer will intimate the contest winner and will also
make sure that contest winner receives it too.
4/19/2023Internship Report - RadioONE FM 94.3For Christ College, Bangalore.
19
Script Writing
Script writing was another very important aspect of a Radio Producer as sometimes
the Radio Jockeys will require to be assisted with certain complex topics like politics,
business or technical terminology. Script writing is just as much a craft as
interviewing, tape editing and mixing. The length of each narration segment is
generally determined by how much information and context is necessary to make
sense of taped segments. Scripting requires a certain level of artistic or stylistic
writing in which the wish to engage a listener.
RadioONE has certain station characters, which have defined characteristics, and
the script must be consistent over all bites. These characters have made an entry into
the listeners mind by their humor or wit, so the script must be as good as the last one.
o Katri Manja, is the Kannada version of Circuit of MunnaiBhai fame.
This character is a very innocent and brainless. Usually, he poses a
problem and also provides a very silly and a humorous answer.
o Life on Bangalore with Rajni Saar, is an imitation of the famous Tamil
super star and his take on issues in Bangalore. He speaks in a very funny
accent and boasts about his skills of tacking issues in Bangalore in his own
manner, which defies all laws of physics, logic and language.
Script also has to be written for clients who want to place an Advertisement with
the Radio station. These scripts have to be written in an adhoc manner as clients may
approach at any point of time and may want an Advertisement instantly.

Outdoor Broadcasting / Live Links
Outdoor Broadcasting / Live Links are segments when a Radio Producer will have to
visits outdoor venues for events, exhibitions or parties and act as a Radio Jockey by
providing information about that event. The Radio Producer will have to interact with
the people involved in the event and gather their opinion and experience from the
venue and coordinate with the studio Radio Jockey.
Sometimes the Radio Producer has to approach passersby and interact with them
by asking them about their views and opinions about any current issue or incident.

Special Events
1. E-zone promotional event at Cosmos Mall with actress Ms Sharmila Mandre
This event was a marketing initiative of RadioONE to gain more business from the
store E-Zone which is the sister concern of Pantaloons. Pantaloons provide a huge
source of revenue to RadioONE in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. So to
generate revenues from Pantaloons even in Bangalore, this initiative was
experimented.
The event was conducted at the E-Zone store at Cosmos Mall in Bangalore on 9 th
June 2007, and was conducted in the presence of a Kannada actress Ms Sharmila
Mandre.
A Treasure hunt was conducted in the premises of the E-Zone store. The MC gave
10 clues to the participants and the first three participants who successfully completed
the competition with the maximum number of correct answers were given gifts.
I was in-charge of creating all the questions, scripting the MC’s speech with the
clues and provide the right answers. I was also involved in the verification and
declaration of the winners.
After the announcements of the winners, I recorded the voice of the actress Ms
Sharmila Mandre and her views and experience on the events and also voices of the

2. Innings with Ponting, event with ING Vysya
Innings with Ponting, was an event sponsored by ING Vysya Bank in association
with RadioONE FM 94.3 on June 13th 2007. ING Vysya had invited Mr. Ricky
Ponting, captain of the Australian cricket team to Bangalore for a fun filled event. Mr.
Ponting would interact with 350 children who are passionate about the game of
cricket.
Mr. Ponting would spend some time with them in the nets by playing a game of
cricket and also give them some valuable tips for improving their cricketing skills and
leadership skills.
a. Questions for contest
RadioONE had the responsibility of selecting the young cricketers within the
age group of 14 to 18 for the event by means of a contest on air. This contest
was conducted for a period of 10 day from June 3rd to June 12th 2007. Daily
RadioONE would invite callers and ask them three questions about Mr. Ricky
Ponting and whoever gives the correct answers will be selected.
I was given the responsibility of preparing for the questions that had to be
asked on a daily basis to the caller. So a thorough research had to be
conducted and relevant facts had to be gathered and framed into questions.
A sample of questions about Mr. Ponting is provided in the Appendix G.
b. Questions on the event
I was also given the responsibility of scripting the speech of the MC from
RadioONE and draft the questions that can be asked to MR. Ponting on the
day of the event.

c. Recording of the voices of the Parents and the young cricketers who
participated in the event.
As many people participated and all had a great time, we wanted to record
their voice and experiences and beam it on air. So I was in charge of
interacting the participants and even their parents and recording their voices
and experiences. Later these sound bites had to be edited and converted into a
Capsule and a Teaser.
d. Press Brief
Every event has to be summarized by a Press Brief so that it can be provided to
the media or the clients. The Press Brief contains the brief summary of the
incidents of the event and the manner the event was conducted.
A sample of the Press Brief of the event Innings with Ponting conducted at the
venue is provided in the Appendix H.

3. Coca Cola Speed Jamming
Coca Cola Speed Jamming is a national event, which promotes the idea of Speed
Dating or Blind Dating. This event was conducted for a period of Six days starting
from 19th June 2007 to 25th June 2007. This contest aims in bringing two singles
together and providing an opportunity for them to interact. A girl will come on-air
and ask a question to all the boys. The boys must reply back with the Wackiest and
Craziest answer for the girls question and the girl will select the best answer. Then
the couple will receive a food voucher, which is like their first date.
On a daily basis I had to scan the calls of the girl who wants to go on-air and ask
the questions. Select the girl with the best question and good attitude. Record her
voice and prepare the Capsule and Teaser and inform the Radio Jockey. When the
contest begins, scanning all the replies from the boys received through telephone calls
or SMSs and coordinating with the Radio Jockey and the girl whose had asked the

RadioONE promotes many new movies and also conducts many promos, contests and

Radio Producer.
1. Aap Ka Surror – Himesh Reshmiayya (Bollywood)
This was a very hyped movie and the debut movie of the actor turned singer
composer Himesh Reshmiayya. Sound bites of an interview Himesh
Reshmiayya was sent by the Head office at Mumbai. At our station we had to
make a similar interview with a local Radio Jockey. Therefore questions had to be

Also free tickets were given to lucky callers and manage the delivery of the
tickets.

CONCLUSION
The internship at RadioONE FM 94.3 was a fulfilling experience where I was able to
put the knowledge gained to practice. This helped me in the process of building in the
necessary skills that a Radio Producer has to inculcate.
I was really lucky to have been involved in some major events like E-zone, Ricky
Ponting and the Speed Jamming. On the process I did commit many mistakes, but it is
all a learning experience.
I was also given lot of responsibility and was asked to manage a major promo of the
Coca Cola Speed Jamming all by myself and my Supervisor was quite happy with my
efforts.
When my Supervisor addressed me on my last day of the internship, he gave me a
score of 10 on 10. They have promised me that in the future if there are any
requirements by the organization, I will be considered as their first choice.
I would like to say that this stint with RadioONE as one of the most memorable days
of my life and have a larger family.
