DAY Crative Business Partner //Amsterdam

Q: What bring you to DAY?A: I started here a year ago. Before, I was wroking as a freelancer in DAY before. And I also freelance for 4 weeks (before I got hired by DAY) in a company in Dordrecht.

Q: How do they get to know you?A: I’m a friend of DAY employee in Dubai. That’s how Louk (the CEO) knows me.

Q: So basically, you get to be noticed through networking right?A: Yes, networking is really important now days.

Q: What is your first project?A: It’s Piet Boon, I have to make a new identity for their website and some prints.Q: and the biggest one?A: also Piet Boon.

Q: how about the most exciting?A: It was my project for Dubai Mall. We were there for 1 month, actually for another project. But it was such a coincidence where we got Dubai Mall as our cli-ent while we were in there. We gave some presentations, and we got the client.

Q: How do DAY actually get their clients?

Q: And who’s actually having a contact with the client? Who received the briefing?A: It’s mostly Fleur (project Manager). But it de-pends on how big is the company. If it’s just a small one, Lotte (graphic designer) or me could also have contact

with them.

Q: And who give the presentation?A: It’s also depends on how big is the company. Mostly Gesina and Louk give the presentation, and meet the client.

Q: All projects have budget right? Is the quality of the product depends on how many budget they give you?A: Nooo, the budget is the Finance work. For us, the designers, budget doesn’t effect the quality of the work. We’re prioritize the quality.

Q: Good to hear! But sometimes you work overtime right? Do they also give you extra if you work overtime?A: No, it’s part of our job. So we don’t get paid extra.

```````````````````````````````````````````
Q: What is your previous education?A: I studied in the GLR Graphic Design Master class. It’s 3 years program. And then I proced to Sint Joost academy in Breda.
Q: How many internships had you done before you work here?A: Many. I did 5 internships. In Paris, Breda, Rotter-dam, and Dordrecht; and then I work again in Rotter-dam to fill my summer vacation.
Q: Who is your inspiration?A: I don’t really have one. But I know this designer I work with in Paris called Nicolas Hubert. He’s really a good example and teacher for me. I learned alot from
him. And for other general inspiration, I used News and blogs, or daily picture for inspiration. I also follow fashion such as Scandinavian fashion; and also interior design.
Q: What style of design do you like?A: I like German and France design. And oh yea, also Dutch design.
Q: What kind of music do you like?A: Fever Ray. It’s like Bjork. They are Swedisch
Thank you..
General ArrangementsWithin which department will I be employed in this practical training period?Graphic Design department.
What are your working times, break times and what is your pay?8 hours working time including 30min break and I got payed enough, and they compensate m travell cost <input:happy emotion text>
What are the arrangements regarding absence, illness, secrecy regarding goods, ect?We have to report ourself to the Project Manager if we are ill or will take our day off as well as making appoint-ment with another co-workers. We are responsible for our own goods. DAY is located in the same building as another company. We have some agreement with that company regarding the use of the building. Like the rules regarding the building cleaness, safety, secu-rity, who owned the key, and what if we work until late night.
What are the rules concerning the use of your mobile phone, MSN, music, computer, ect?As far as I have observed, people use their mobile phone outside the studio. They not using MSN, but skype and it’s only for work. Music is everybody’s extra energy to concentrate at work. Fortunately everybody have the same taste at music, so we all hear the same thing from the speaker, or else we use headset and listen to our owns. Computer is individual because it links to the Mac Mail.
Making arrangement about the supervisionThe practical trainer and I will discuss my progress every month due the tight schedule we have in the com-pany. But though, I will fill the reflection form weekly.
The Project Manager will arrange schedule for me and most of the time I help the graphic designer with sketching or any other assignment. When they have something to do for me, they soon give a briefing about the assignment so that I can get a clear overview about it. After the briefing, then I start working. She comes to check how I am doing once in a while. During that visit, she will give me some feedback, what I could do better, or what did I do wrong. Sometimes, she will show me some technique and a better way to work.
I will inform about the school result during the evalua-tion moment.
We haven’t arrange any evaluation moment.
a. Acquisition (advertising for costumers)Who? Networking or by applying to be one of companies who will work on the project.How?Usually it’s done by personal visit.How often?Very often, but it depends on how busy is the company and how interesting is the soon-to-be client and project.
b. OfferHow?The hourly rates are done by keeping our daily compa-ny log book. From there the Finance manager will cal-culate how many hours in total for every work process to be reported to the client.
Which cost?It’s depends on the client’s budget. But budget doesn’t affect much on the final product quality.
Out of prediction cost?The material and tryout cost usually is paid by the clients. But if the tryout is limited to prints, usually the company takes the risk. It’s also depends on how big is the clients.The company will not pay more for employee who work overtime due because it’s part of job.
If the printing company makes mistake, that printing company should take the risk. If the design company who makes the mistake, usually they are the one who should pays the extra cost.
c. Briefing/course of the orderThe briefing comes in various ways depends on how big is the client company. If the company is big, usually the client’s project manager will contact our project man-ager for briefing. It could be send by email or post mail. After that our project manager will give the briefing to the senior designer / project leader. But if the company and the project is small, usually the graphic designer could get a direct contact and briefing with the client.
d. DraftAfter we got the briefing, we normally make mood board (if necessary), do research, and start sketching. This is the part where usually the intern gets assign-ment. After sketching, we collect all sketches together, discuss it, and start deciding on what should be put on the first presentation. All drafts later on will be put on a specific folder on the server.
e. Presentation and CommunicationThere are normally 3 times presentations. The first presentation is more conceptual, just to give the client a clear overview on which direction they will go. On this presentation they usually offer 3 concepts.
The second presentation is the improvement of the chosen concept. And the last presentation will be the final design.
It is usually the creative partner (senior Art Director) and managing partner (usually be the project leader) who present the presentation to client. If it’s a small cli-ent company, the graphic designer could directly present it to them.
f. ElaborationAfter the client choose the concept they want, the designers start working on the preliminary design which is the same concept but with more variation and design direction. For interior designer, it means they have to start working on the 3D version of their sketch, choose materials, and really calculating everything.
Software the graphic designers use is AI.
g. Inspecting end productThe final product is to be inspected at the client’s meet-ing office or at the place where the project is to be held. For example like lettering, it’s better for the graphic designer to see how big the wall and the surrounding environment on the spot so they get a clear overview.
h. Supplying end productUsually the end product reached the client through 3rd parties. Depends again on what the end product is about.
i. Invoicing client.
--
j. After sales / follow-up careThe one who usually do follow-up is the project leader.
DAY Crative Business Partner //Amsterdam
What kinda company is .DAY ?
DAY is an Amsterdam based company who does in-terior and graphic design projects. Although they are a young design company, but they are already being trusted to do many big project such as the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, that will be launch around this year.
Such a creative and cheerful company in the beginning, they deliver the client a really creative and cool stuff. Not just creative they are, but also understand the cli-ent’s need in good product that actually sells.
The team consists of Interior Architects and Graphic Designers. They usually work together on some projects that needs both interior and graphic product. But some projects don’t need both interior and graphic, so some-times they also work individually. Some designers even do both graphic and interior designs.
The studio in Amsterdam is cozy. Consist of two big tables with iMac’s, we work near with each other. Just shout the other’s name and they will come to you.
Being international is probably their goal. They already made a branch office in Dubai, and another office in New York. And what makes it different than the one in Amsterdam is that DAY Dubai seems to do more advertisement.
A young DAY will grow to a bigger company. And it’s a nice experience to know the people and to see how they work to make DAY bigger.
What kind of work I do there ?
Most of the time, I help the other graphic designer with sketching and making presentation. The sketch I do mostly done in AI. It’s different in school when most of the sketches should be done in sketch book.
I also joined them in some briefing to know details about project they’ve been doing or will start to do.
