Department of Criminal Justice

CRJ 492 Internship (3-6 credit hours)

Enrollment and Course Requirements

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Criminal Justice Internship provides students with a supervised field experience in a justice agency.

The student is responsible for securing placement prior to course enrollment. Credit can be earned only

for work completed during the semester in which the student is enrolled in the course. This course is

graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Students must register for a minimum of 3 credit hours. A

maximum of 6 credit hours is possible, but only 3 can be used toward the CRJ major. Credit hours 4-6

will count as university electives toward the 120 hours needed to graduate.

PREREQUISITES

You must be a CRJ major or minor.

You must have completed CRJ 110 with a minimum grade of “C” or better (C- is not acceptable).

You must have at least Junior standing (i.e., 60 semester hours) when your internship begins.

HOW TO ENROLL

1. Students are responsible for securing their own internship placement. Do this by reviewing the

approved agencies in the Internship Catalog (www.unco.edu/criminaljustice/internships.html), by

contacting the listed contact person to find out more about the internship experience they offer,

and then by scheduling an interview with the agencies of interest to you.

2. Because the Criminal Justice Department must anticipate the number of interns who will enroll

each semester, please complete and submit to the Internship Coordinator an Internship

Application Form when you have narrowed your choice of agencies to 3 or fewer possibilities.

This form should be submitted even before you have received formal acceptance by an agency.

3. After an agency has accepted you as an intern, the Internship Confirmation Form must be

completed and sent to the Internship Coordinator. Please complete the top part of the form

then have the Field/Site Supervisor complete and sign the form. Deliver the signed form to

Internship Coordinator (scanned and attached to an email, hand delivered to CAND 2285, or

faxed to 970-351-1527).

4. After receiving the Internship Confirmation Form, the Internship Coordinator will open a

position for the intern to enroll in the Internship Course CRJ 492 offered each semester. Then

go to Blackboard to find access to your section.

NOTE: This process must be completed before the ADD date each semester (see the relevant calendar

at http://www.registrar.unco.edu/Registrarscalendar.htm). Students will not be allowed in the

Internship course after the ADD date, so it is important to arrange your internship as soon as possible.

Enrollment preference is on a “first come, first served” basis. Class size is limited.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The intern must:

Complete 50 hours of agency contact for each credit hour enrolled (e.g., to receive 3 credits you

must complete 150 contact hours).

Provide on the Blackboard Discussion Board weekly updates of the hours completed that week

with a brief sentence or two, comment about your duties/activities with the agency during the

week, and comment each week on at least two posts made by your fellow intern classmates.

Submit a 2-4 page report no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Monday of finals week. The report

should (1) identify your internship agency and your Field/Site Supervisor; (2) provide an

overview of the highlights of your experience; (3) indicate the similarities and differences

between the internship experience and material from relevant criminal justice courses; (4)

describe any ethical issues that arose during your internship and explain how they were

resolved; and then (5) conclude with lessons learned and how this experience has influenced

your career goals.

Receive a satisfactory final evaluation by your Field/Site Supervisor.

REQUIRED FORMS
