INTERNSHIP IN INTERIOR DESIGN CAHS 4920: I nternship Course Descr ipti o n: The goal of the Interior Design Internship Program is to provide effective professional preparation for the students through field experience. Through mutual efforts to meet the educational needs of the students (as described by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, formerly FIDER), who are the future professionals, the cooperative relationship between the business and academic communities will be enhanced. The program is thereby established to benefit the student, the university, and the employer.

The following criteria have been developed as an operational framework for the Internship Program. The objectives should provide the framework for the development of each individual’s internship program. The student intern is responsible for developing, in cooperation with the Field Supervisor and with approval of the Internship Coordinator, an individualized program based upon identification of the internship objectives. Work experience structure and policies of participating firms may indicate modification of the program.

Internsh ip Exper ience: During the Internship the student should be regarded as an employee, with the obligations and privileges that implies, and will be expected to follow all policies of the firm applicable to this position of employment. The policies should be made clear to the student at the beginning of the internship.

INTERNSHIP IN INTERIOR DESIGN CAHS 4920: Weekly Journaling Reports:

Each week the student intern will submit a Weekly Journaling Report by e-mail that discusses the week’s projects and activities. The student intern’s perspective of the job is an important part of the Weekly Journaling Reports, although they should not be approached as personal journals. Weekly Journaling Reports should document work related events and activities experienced by the Student Intern in a professional manner.

Each Weekly Journaling Report should be carefully and thoughtfully written. It should identify and focus on the learning outcome of the work experiences, NOT MERELY A CHRONOLOGICAL NARRATIVE OF WEEKLY ACTIVITIES. The Weekly Journaling Report should analyze the work experience in the context of professional and personal objectives fulfilled or not fulfilled, insights gained in relationships with fellow employees, Field Supervisor and client insights into professional and business practices. The Weekly Journaling Report should be reflective and introspective.

The Weekly Journaling Reports should use a professional report format (include intern’s name, firm name and address, Field Supervisor’s name and registration or license number) and be dated and numbered according to the corresponding week to which it is documenting.

Weekly Journaling Reports are separate in manner and objectives from each week’s Assignment.

Journal i n g B i n der:

Create a Journaling Binder in a bound document format. It should include a table of contents, tabs, and ALL Journaling Reports completed during the internship. Include examples of work completed during the weeks documented. Examples may be in the form of sketches, CAD work, materials in “Look Book” form, photos, legends, budget info, etc.
