UCLA Department of Theater Theater Internship Program Theater 498 303 E. Melnitz Hall (310) 825-7008 [email protected] The Internship Program The UCLA TFT Theater Internship Program is open to enrolled students from the Department of Theater. This course provides students with an opportunity to gain field experience in theater, film, television and entertainment organizations. Each student’s internship is a variable-time assignment in the profession. Examples of appropriate organizations are The Actors’ Gang, Center Theater Group, Comedy Central, Creative Artists Agency, DreamWorks, Geffen Playhouse, L.A. Theatre Works, MTV, Nickelodeon, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Students must select an organization and make direct contact with the internship coordinator at the organization to secure an internship. Please note that the Theater Department staff and internship coordinator do not provide guidance in selecting an internship. Students receive internship credit by enrolling in Theater 498. Theater 498 is offered Fall, Winter and Spring quarters as well as in the Summer Session. Enrollment must be completed by the end of the second week of the quarter in which internship activity occurs. Please see “How to Enroll in Theater 195/498” for paperwork deadlines as well as for information on enrolling in the proper quarter. HowtoEnrollinTheater498TheaterstudentshaveaccesstotheTheateronlineinternshipdatabaseathttp://intranet.tft.ucla.edu/students/theater/.Clickon“Internships”toreceiveaccesstothesyllabusandallrequireddocuments.DeterminingthenumberofunitsCreditisassignedbasedonthenumberofhoursworkedeachweekduringtheten-weekinternshiporthetotalnumberofhoursworked.Internshipsmaybetakenand/orrepeatedforamaximumtotaloftwelve(12)units:

• 12hoursperweek(120hourstotal):4units• 18hoursperweek(180hourstotal):6units• 24hoursperweek(240hourstotal):8units• 30hoursperweek(300hourstotal):12units

2. Atwo-pagetypedessaydetailingwhatthestudenthopestogainfromtheinternshipexperience.Answerthefollowingquestionsintheessay:

o Whatdoyouhopetolearnfromthisinternship?Whatdoyouwanttolearnaboutthecompanyorthislineofwork?Inwhatwayswouldyouliketogrowpersonallyandprofessionallyfromthisexperience?

o Whatmeaningfulworkwillyoubeperformingatyourinternship?Whatareyourgoalsandexpectations?

o Giveashortsitedescription.Whatdoesthiscompanydo?

3. Anacceptanceletter(oncompanyletterhead)fromthesponsoringorganizationthatstatesthefollowing:

o Lengthoftheinternship.InternshipdatesmustcoincidewithFall,Winter,SpringorSummerquarters.Enrollinthequarterinwhichtheinternshipends.

o Descriptionofinternshipactivities.o Thespecificareaordepartmentwithintheorganizationwherethe

studentwillwork.o Theweeklyortotalhours.o Thenameofthesitesupervisor.

Theater498dutiesDuringtheInternshipOncetheinternshiphasbegun,studentsmustsubmitaonetotwoparagraphtypedweeklyjournalsummarizingtheinternshipactivities.Thejournalsshouldbesubmittedbeginningthefirstweekoftheinternship,regardlessofwhenthequarterbegins.Thesejournalsshouldbeemailedtoyourinternshipadvisor.Thisissubjecttochange.Pleasecontacttheinternshipcoordinator,ShannonMaguire,[email protected]’scontactinformationatthestartofyourinternship.JournalentriesshouldbesubmittedbyWednesdayofeachweekforthepreviousweek’sactivity.Youwillreceiveaconfirmationemailafteryousubmityourfirstjournal.AttheConclusionoftheInternshipWhentheinternshipiscompleted,thestudentmustsubmitdocumentationontheculminationofhis/herwork.Thisdocumentationmayutilizeseveraldifferentformats-writtenreports,designsketches,projectbrochures,videos,etc.Theculminatingprojectmustsummarizethecompleteinternshipexperienceandwhatthestudentlearnedfromit.Theremustbeatleastthreetofivepagesofsummary.Thisessaymustbeturnedinby5:00pmontheThursdayof10thweek.ThedeadlineforSummerSessionsistheThursdayof6thweek.GradingStructure60% WeeklyJournals40% FinalEssay
