Interns

Metro Interns The Kansas City Star is looking for energetic, self-motivating reporters for 2010 summer internships. The internships last 10 weeks, and the newspaper pays $436 a week. Candidates should send a cover letter, résumé with three references (reference letters are not necessary) and no more than 5 clips to Jesse Barker, The Kansas City Star, 1729 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. 64108. The deadline is Oct. 26. Please send hard copies. Because of the volume of applicants (and the unreliability of Web site links), it is too time-consuming to look up clips online. Interviews will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 4, at KU. Interns usually work in the newspaper’s main downtown newsroom with a possibility of spending some weeks in a suburban bureau. During the summer, the metro desk interns gather with the interns from other departments — such as sports, the copy desk and the photo desk — to talk about writing and coverage with newsroom veterans. Like fulltime reporters, summer interns are encouraged to generate their own stories and to work with artists, photographers and editors on daily and enterprise story assignments. The internships usually begin in late May, but there is some latitude in the specific start date.
