Internet 2 is basically an innovated way faster version of the regular Internet we all use. This internet is limited to many few users and who knows when we will use it in the future.

Pulls down files in a touch instead of minutes Limited and its backbone is made up entirely of large-capacity

fiber-optic cables. Rather than Internet1 As a result, Internet2 moves data 100 to 1,000 times

faster than the old-fashioned Internet. More than 200 universities, 70 private companies, 45

government agencies, and 45 international organizations log on to Internet2 every day.

4 goals have been identified that fulfill the mission of Internet2:

o Goal I – To design, operate, and continually advance a leading-edge research and education network as a national asset

o Goal II – To provide researchers and scholars with the tools and support they need to envision and execute the next generation of collaborative discovery

o Goal III – To maintain vigorous partnership, outreach, and advocacy programs to mutually develop, promote, and share the transformational power of cyberinfrastructure throughout various communities

o Goal IV – To operate the Internet2 organization as a commendable membership organization with empowered leadership, financial simplicity and member engagement at all levels in order to achieve the membership's shared objectives as communicatived through participatory governance and continuous assessment

The focus of Internet2 is on enabling applications. It isn't possible to forecast all the applications we will see, however a sample of current ideas and applications will give us a taste of the future.

Digital libraries featuring streaming high-quality audio and video content, large bitmap scanned images that appear instantaneously on the screen, and new forms of data visualization.

Music instruction with high-quality, multi-channel, multi-party audio and video; interactivity, to support ensemble playing and music/dance improvisation; and synchronization of audio, video, and annotations.

Remote Surgery

Columbus, OH -- January 7, 2000 -- An audience watched a surgeon sew up a herniated bladder as another surgeon, two miles away in the Rhodes State Office Tower, collaborated with him as part of a live demonstration of Internet2 technology on January 11 .

The Office of the Future project is striving to to bring together geographically distant persons in a realistic, tele-collaborative environment

Using real-time computer vision techniques, dynamic 3D images of your colleague in their office surroundings are captured and transmitted to your Office of the Future where virtual reality technology is used to create a life-size, visual portal into the distant space.

Tele-vator excavation backhoe

Tele-vator is a computerized excavation backhoe that can be remotely operated over Internet2 High Performance networks.

Tele-vator requires a high level of sophisticated two-way feedback, including adequate depth of vision provided via high-definition stereovision.

Guaranteed Quality-of-Service (QoS) — such as network bandwidth, latency (delay) control, and jitter (variability in delay) control — are essential to insure the quality of the 3D image, audio, and equipment control channels required by Tele-vator´s remote operators

The Nano-Manipulator

The Nano-Manipulator is an interface to scanning probe microscopes (SPM) allowing users to see, feel, and manipulate samples ranging in size from DNA to single atoms.

A nanoManipulator can be used collaboratively by scientists in a "virtual laboratory" environment that allows remote access to a shared microscope and previously collected data.

the typical scientific experiment using the nanoManipulator lasts for many hours, creating a long-lived high demand on the network.

Internet2 is a lot faster than the internet we use today, but we can’t use it..yet! Internet2 members and institutions are aiming to share their knowledge to many computer users today. This approach characterized the first Internet and it can work again today.
