What is Online Chat ????????

Online chat is any communication using the internet. Mostly one on one using IM (instant message)

Page 4: Internet Safety: I

Problems with Chatrooms:

Many spammers use names they can easily collect from a chat room, consider using a "chat" screen name. This name would be one that is different than your e-mail address. This could help prevent unwanted Spam mail from coming to your email inbox.   Chatrooms are the playground of today's sexual predator. Even monitored chatrooms offered by some Internet service providers are not able to detect a disquised predator lurking in a chatroom. Most parental controls and filters offer an option for parents to disallow chatrooms.

Block instant/personal messages from people you and your child don't know. (Check to see which IM services have this feature.)4. Beware of SPAM! It's not your friend.

Spammer Sally (aka Emily) reporting about spam. Here's the 411:

• What is spam? Spam is commercial advertising for products, get rich schemes and other shady services.  It is also referred to as internet "junk mail."

• Why does spam present such a problem?  Not only is spam annoying to receive but is also takes up a lot of network bandwidth and can contain virus that will infect your computer.

• What should you do if you receive spam?  The best thing you can do is delete it immediately and DO NOT open it.  Do not reply to spam e-mails and do not open any e-mail or attachment from someone that you do not know or if the subject of the message is strange.  Make sure you have an active anti-virus program.

Beware of Spam! It's not your friend.

• How can I minimize spam? It is very hard to stop receiving spam altogether but there are some steps you can take to decrease it:  Avoid giving your e-mail address out on too many websites or at the checkout counter when shopping.  Think about creating more than one e-mail address. For example one that you use only for school and work purposes, that only friends and family know about.  Use your e-mail applications filtering features to block specific messages.  You can also report the spam sender to your internet service provider.

• E-mail safety tips: Change your password often and do not share it with anyone.  Do not give your personal information out online.  Log off when done.

• What is a mailing list?  A mailing list is a collection of  e-mail addresses used to send material to multiple recipients.
