What is Internet Protocol?

A set of rules governing the format of data sent

over the internet or other network.

Internet Protocol v6

IPV6 is the latest level of the Internet Protocol (IP).

IPV6 allows more users and devices to communicate on

the internet by using bigger numbers to create IP

addresses.

IPV6 addresses are 128 bits, which allow for

approximately three hundred trillion trillion trillion unique

IP addresses.

8 groups of 16-bit hexadecimal numbers separated by “:”

3FFE:85B:1F1F::A9:1234

:: = all zeros in one or more group of 16-bit hexadecimal numbers

Leading zeros can be removed

Types of IPv6 Addresses

Page 6: Internet protocol, version 6 (i pv6)

Unicast

Address of a single interface

Delivery to single interface

Page 7: Internet protocol, version 6 (i pv6)

Multicast

Address of a set of interfaces

Delivery to all interfaces in the

set

Page 8: Internet protocol, version 6 (i pv6)

Anycast

Address of a set of interface

Delivery to a single interface

in the set

IPv6 Adoption

IPv6 – Google

Do you want to see how many user are using ipv6 ??

Page 10: Internet protocol, version 6 (i pv6)

Advantages of IPv6 over IPv4

Larger address space

Better header format

Allowance for extension

Support for resource allocation

Support for more security

Support for mobility

Page 11: Internet protocol, version 6 (i pv6)

Do We Really Need a Larger Address

Space?

Internet Users or PC

~3 billion users in 2014

(Source: http://www.internetlivestats.com/internet-users/)

Emerging population/geopolitical and Address space

PDA, Pen-Tablet, Notepad,…

~ 1 billion in 2010

Mobile phones

Already 5 billion mobile phones delivered by the industry

Transportation

3 billion automobiles forecast for 2013

Internet access in Planes

Consumer devices

billions of Home and Industrial Appliances

IPv6: Security

Mandatory use of IPsec ( internet protocol security)

o It is a framework of IP.

AH(Authentication Header)

o This is the part of IPsec.

ESP(Encapsulation Security Payload)

o ESP provide confidentiality.

IPv6 deployment in India

Department of telecommunications, of government of

India is running a program of adoption of ipv6 in the

government network.
