Internet of the Future, a Framework 7 presentation by the European Commission at Nordic Game 2008 in Malmö, Sweden. On May 14th we hosted a session at the Nordic Game Conference in Malmö on Framework 7. The session was well attended. From the commission’s side Bartlolomé Arroyoz-Fernandez participated (deputy head of unit). Developers were represented by CCP and Funcom. Additionally two enablers from Finland participated at the discussion. In his speech Bartlolomé Arroyoz-Fernandez explained some fundamental things about the program and its connection to game development. Attached, please find his presentation. The Media Revolution

2006 “digital production”: 160 exabytes, fuelled by user generated content;

6 fold increase expected by 2010, 990 exabytes (pro + non pro)An ever increasing quality (Digital Cinema, Ultra HDTV,

Computer Games…)Within 3 years, 70% of created and archived content expected

to come from users; Europe and US, about 75% of content origin. Expected to

decrease (in proportion), as Asia Pacific grows;Networked amplified phenomenon: 253 Million e-mail boxes in

1998, 1.6 Bn today; Unprecedented connectivity (social media) Terabyte personal storage (personalised media)Device size, mobility/location (media on the move, context-aware), ubiquity

Video traffic will push the capacity limits of networks through 3 waves: video to PC, video to TV, video calls (CISCO study)

Video to PC, YouTube effect: US traffic in 2007 exceed US Internet backbone capacity of 2000 (25 Pb/mo), YT about half of it

Global Internet video traffic in 2011: 17 times the 2006 video traffic (120 Pb/mo)

Total IP traffic: from 4.5 Exabytes/mo in 2005 to 29 exabytes/mo in 2011

Trend: New Networks

Gaming MarketIn Europe the video gaming sector

is worth half as much as the music market exceeds the cinema box office.

increasingly accessible via internet and mobile phones,

expected to make up 33% of total revenues for video games by 2010.

Commissioner V. Reding: "Video games have become a strong pillar of Europe's content industry and are experiencing

booming sales across Europe”.

R&D on Networked Media: Proposed topics for future Calls (1/2)

• Content-aware Networks and Network-aware ApplicationsUser generated content/social networks, Enriched media experiences (at the “Extended Home”, Community and Social Media …)

– Architectures and technologies for converged and scalable delivery of MM content (content and context-aware, personalised…). Home services, mobility scenarios…

– Integrity and quality of the media (collaborative media creation, delivery scenarios (sharing, storage, retrieval, fusion…). MM real-time and immersive applications

– Scalable Video Coding, Multi-viewpoint coding (2D-3D)…• 3D Media Internet:

Collaborative 3D environments on Networks and 3D Content– E2E architectures and technologies for Future Media Internet and 3D

processing: creation, delivery and rendering (inc. real time)– Methodologies and technologies for 3D content representation (configuration,

adaptation, user control…)– Architectures and technologies for 3D augmented worlds and applications

Page 16: Internet of the Future, a Framework 7 presentation by the ...Next step: 3-D Internet Individual Connected Inside Level of Interaction Time Multiplicity of Virtual World Platforms,

R&D on Networked Media: Proposed topics for future Calls (2/2)

• Networked Search and RetrievalLarge-scale distributed digital AV content in diverse scenarios (inc. nomadicity)

- Interactive, scalable, multi-modal (and cross-modal) - Media to network and device dynamic adaptation (P2P, mobile

terminals)- Adaptation based on relevance feedback, user context

• New generation of TV and Electronic CinemaHigher frame rates, contrast range, colour gamut, surround sound, multi-viewpoint coding, 3D capabilities, immersive environments, network architectures for E2E…

• Horizontal issues: International cooperation, Standardisation, European Research Area (collaboration with national initiatives) …

Future Internet Initial steps

Group of leading European Scientists and Industrialists took the first step in the summer 2006

Challenges, threats, opportunities, strengthsReport issued in December 2006

Independent initiative (FIRE) launched with the objective to federate the approach to experimental test beds.Large number of Internet related projects retained as a result of Calls 1 and 2Many FP6 projects with a strong Internet component still up and running

Page 18: Internet of the Future, a Framework 7 presentation by the ...Next step: 3-D Internet Individual Connected Inside Level of Interaction Time Multiplicity of Virtual World Platforms,

Why should we act?High time that Europe appears as a “cutting edge”technological and innovation areaNeed to create new opportunities for the European actors of the Internet of tomorrowNeed to enable the future and not simply to foresee itWe should not be happy by simply taking a 2nd rate positionCompetitiveness today can not be dissociated from business innovationAt the end, what really matters are not the inputs but rather the impact they haveWe need to drive Europe forward

We need to drive Europe forward

The Bled Declaration“European Internet scientific and economic actors, researchers, industrialists, SMEs, users, service and content providers, now assert the urgent necessity to redesign the Internet, taking a broad multi-disciplinary approach, to meet Europe’s societal and commercial

ambitions”

The signatories call on:MS to strengthen and coordinate their R&D on FIEC to stress the vision and amplify the related R&DMS and the EU to support the Future Internet Assembly

Multiple architectural, technological, business approaches driving requirements towards a FICross domain issues considerations are key:

Impact of media, services, mobility and “things; Security as a transverse issueTestbeds requirements across technological domains

Need to better understand how architectures will be impacted, eventually driving standards and novel range of productsNo unique vision sought, but need to understand (industrial) opportunities and risks of different approachesFIA momentum created around these issueFIA initiated with FP7 projects, but open to other contributors

The FI Assembly
