  2. 2. What is the Internet? A network of many different computers communicating with each other Transmits information almost instantly all over the world 2
  3. 3. Why The Internet? Most modern computers can hold approximately the same amount of information as 150,000 books. Modern computers can transmit the equivalent of a book every 20 seconds. Information that would have taken days or weeks to be sent on paper arrives in seconds! 3

  5. 5. The Internet: A History Began in 1969 as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency), a Defense Department project to decentralize computer connections 1970s and 80s: Rules for transferring data (protocols) developed by researchers 1990s: Opened for commercial and public use 5
  6. 6. The World Wide Web (www.) What we think of when we think of the Internet Defined by hyperlinks in online documents that link to other documents This link goes to the Fort Worth Library website! 6
  7. 7. URLs: Internet Addresses URLs : Uniform Resource Locators, the addresses at which webpages are located URLs have different parts: http://www.fortworthlibrary.org Protocol Host Address Domain 7

Domains and Country Codes Domains: .com: corporations and businesses .edu: educational institutions (universities) .gov: federal, state, and local governments .mil: the military .org: non-profit organizations (like the library!) Country codes: .uk: United Kingdom .ca: Canada .mx: Mexico .de: Germany .jp: Japan .tv: Tuvalu 8

  18. 18. Address Bar The Address Bar is located at the top Type in the URL for the website you want and hit Enter Most browsers have search engines built into the address bar 18

  20. 20. Back and Forward Arrows Back moves to the previous page you were viewing (works more than once!) Forward moves forward through the list of pages Click and hold to select a specific page from a list 20
  21. 21. Website vs. Web Page A website is a collection of web pages A web page may be longer than what is on the screen 21
  22. 22. Reload Button Reloads the webpage Good for checking for updated information or to try to load a page that gave an error Hit F5! 22
  23. 23. Home Page The page your browser loads when it starts Home pages can be changed from the Options menu Click on the house! 23
  24. 24. Bookmarks Saves favorite webpages so you can go back quickly without having to retype complicated addresses Bookmarks can be sorted into folders to keep them organized Click the star in the Address Bar or hit Ctrl-D! 24
  25. 25. Tabs Allows multiple webpages to be open at the same time Open new tabs by clicking the button to the right of the tabs Close tabs by clicking the X inside the tab 25

Common Errors 500 Internal server error: The browser cant find the server Your internet may be down The website might be too busy 404 Page not found: The browser cant find the website Make sure you typed the URL correctly The page may have moved 403 Forbidden: Website access requires permission You may need to login again The website might be having a problem 27

  35. 35. Warning! The Internet is NOT censored The Internet is NOT always fact-checked Things arent always what they seem When in doubt, ask! 35
  36. 36. Being Safe on the Internet Theres a ton you can do on the Internet, but it can also be a dangerous place Always remember the Internet is a public place 36
  37. 37. Update Your Software Older software versions can contain weaknesses that hackers and viruses can exploit Make sure you keep your software up to date Check websites regularly for patches and new versions 37
  38. 38. Spyware & Antivirus Software Antivirus software can help keep out malicious software or viruses Spyware tracks your actions and disseminates your information to places you dont want it to go Remember: you are the best antivirus security! 38

Your Personal Information Remember that the Internet is very open and that it's difficult to know where information will go Don't use your personal identifying information if you can help it If you must share personal or financial information, make sure you're using a trusted site with secure encryption 39
  40. 40. Secure Encryption Sites use a protocol called SSL to encrypt personal information Look for the lock in your browser! Notice the protocol is HTTPS 40
