Basic Terms

• Computer Network

Is a group of computers connected together by network cables sharing information.

• Server

Is a computer that provides internet services to other computer in the network.

• Web Browser

This is a software which gives you access to World Wide Web (www).

Is that computer which is globally connected to other computers

• Common web browsers used are(i) Internet Explorer(ii) Netscape Navigator

Uniform Resource Locater (URL)

Is a means of specifying the pathname for any resource on the internet.

E.g. http://www.udsm.ac.tz

http://www.bbc.co.uk/swahili

3 ways of entering URL:-• World Wide Web (WWW)

Is a collection of host machines which delivers documents, graphics and multimedia(sound, video) to users via the internet.

• Hypertext Markup Language (HTML):-

This is a language which was designed for creating web

pages which contain hyperlinks.

Domain

• Domain is the unique name of a computer on the Internet that distinguishes it from the rest.

• Standard organization abbreviations: .com Designates a Commercial site .gov  Designates a Governmental site .mil   Designates a Military site .net  Designates a Networks Services site .edu  Designates an Educational site .org  Designates Other Organizations

There are basically 2 ways to search information from the Internet:-

• Using Search Engine

• Using Web Directories

• These are web software that are useful for searching information

• You just type your query at a search engine using correct English sentence

• Then click search button

Electronic Mail (E-mail)

   Is a system for sending and receiving messages all over the world.

• It allows you to electronically create a message, indicate the recipient’s address, send it and receive a reply

Creating an e-mail account

• An E-mail address is composed of the username, the machine name, the network and the top-level domain name

• username@machine_name.network.top-level_domain

• Open the website e.g www.yahoo.com• Click on Mail• Click on Sign Up Now• Fill the registration form• Submit the registration form• Click Continue to Yahoo Mail

• Check Mail – check the incoming emails

• Compose – send emails

• Addresses – store other people’s addresses

• Inbox – store incoming emails

• Trash – Unwanted emails

• Click on Inbox hyperlink • Click on the subject to open the

incoming messages• You can reply, forward it to another

person, delete it or go back to your inbox to read other emails.

• Basic Terms • To – receiver’s e-mail address • Cc – carbon copy sent to people who should

be aware of this email • Bcc – blind carbon copy • Subject –summary of the message• Attachments – send files stored in your

computer together with the email • Send – click send button to send your email • Sign out-enables you to quit the mail

• •    Open the website address• Click on Mail• •    Type the e-mail address and • the password• •    Click Sign in button

• Select a message to forward

• Click on Forward

• Type the e-mail address, subject and supporting message

• Click Send

• Download the attachment

• Choose Save the file to a disk

• Specify the disk drive

• Click Save

• Click Attachments • Click browse to specify the of file name and

location • Click Attach Files, click Done• Click Send to send the attached file • Display back the inbox

• Click Add to Address Book

• Type the name of the person
