INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2017 #IWD17NI Programme of Events February—March 2017
THEME
The theme of International Women’s Day 2017 is Peace,
Solidarity & Sustenance; Keeping Body and
Soul Together. Every year we celebrate IWD to mark
the political, economic, social and cultural gains of women
while highlighting our continued fight for equality.
In this time of global turmoil we are witnessing the biggest
refugee crisis since WWII. Across the island of Ireland there
are unprecedented numbers of homeless people and families relying on foodbanks. We have
now lost more people to suicide than we did throughout the history of the conflict. Our polit-
ical institutions have collapsed and we are facing into a period of political uncertainty.
This is a time when many women are feeling insecure and fearful of the future.
Our theme is to assure all women that throughout the dark times now and in the future, the
women’s movement continues to stand in solidarity, to fight for equality, to work to trans-
form the world into one where hunger and homelessness do not exist.
With over 50 events, from talks to dances and poetry to debates, our programme reflects
this theme with acclaimed political activist “Professor Angela Y Davis” speaking in City Hall
and representatives from “Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign” speaking in Central Hall
Rosemary st Belfast. Reclaim the Agenda will not be passive, we will not be silenced and we
stand tall and proud showing the strength and diversity of the Women’s Movement.
Now is the time for change and we are that change.
IWD Rally
Saturday 4th March, 11am
Writers Square, Belfast
Come and celebrate International Women's Day in style!
Meeting at Writers Square at 11am we will have face painting, feminist photo booth, kids party
bags and more to get us in the mood. Leaving writers square at 11.30 we will make our noisy and
colourful parade through the city with drumming from the fabulous Chidambaram all female
drummers!
A real family parade where everyone is welcome to come along, dress up as you like, we love the
suffragette outfits and land girls from back in the day but this year with our theme “Peace, Soli-
darity and Sustenance” we could see some peace loving hippies, come as you like and enjoy the
day.
Lord Mayor Brian Kingston will be greeting us on the cobbles at the front of the City Hall and Bar-
oness May Blood will address the crowd. We are delighted to have a great line up of inspirational-
speakers.
