ISCMNP at a Glance The main objective of summer course is to introduce marine natural product
chemistry, a cutting-edge of organic chemistry, by studying Indonesian biodiversity and
their chemistry. Key topics are consisted of biodiversity of Indo-Pacific marine
organisms, isolation and structure elucidation of marine natural products,
biosynthesis of marine natural products, marine natural products synthesis and
medicinal chemistry, marine chemical ecology, marine natural products chemical
biology and biotechnology, mode of action and drug development of marine
natural products.
The summer course provides high caliber mentors in the field. A combination of
lectures, seminars, field, and laboratory works as well as interactive sessions will provide
an immersive and challenging experience research. Students and researchers in the
fields of Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Marine Science
and related fields will have the opportunity to participate in the summer school and attend
lectures covering topics related to the entire workflow of marine natural products
research, current challenges and opportunities associated with natural products. As the
scientific background of participants is expected to differ widely, the intensive summer
school will offer lectures ranging from fundamental knowledge to advanced level.
Course Description International Summer Course on Marine Natural Products with 2 credit is designed
for international/national upper undergraduate and graduate students who are engaged
in life science and related fields. The program provides laboratory and field works as well
as teaching by invited Professors/Experts. This course has prerequisite general courses
such as basic chemistry and biology. The learning outcome of this course is to study
marine natural product chemistry in the perspective of chemistry and biology especially
molecular structure determination of marine natural products. Furthermore, the activities
will give students/participants to apply their knowledge and devise solutions giving an
understanding of Indonesian or worldwide marine biodiversity through upgrading the skill
of participants. This can be done by identification of marine organisms through checking
their morphology, isolation of major organic molecules, identification of functional
group/substructure using spectroscopy UV, IR, chemical transformation (simple staining
reaction in chromatography). Moreover, participants can study a comprehensive
structure elucidation of simple to complex organic molecules by given UV, IR, NMR, MS,
X-ray, ECD, chemical transformation, and optical rotation data. In addition, the upgrading
knowledge and communication skill will be through a series of tests, oral and poster as
well as assignments. The course is given in English.
