2.1 About the International Relations Office

In todays global economy, it is imperative that institutions of higher learningstrategically position themselves for the challenges and promises of life in thenetworked academic community. It is also important for the institutions torecognize and celebrate diversity in their educational and scholarly pursuits.Cognisant of these realities, the University of Zimbabwe has successfullyestablished numerous strategic academic alliances with other dynamic globalinstitutions that are similarly aware of the benefits that accrue from theinternationalization of higher education. The University is today an activemember of the elite global intellectual community.

It continues to extend its influence and brand across the globe and is recognizedglobally for its high quality training and research programmes. It hascontributed immensely to the human resource needs of the region, Africa,and indeed the world as a whole. The University has, since its inception in1955, attracted hundreds of students per year from all corners of the globe forits degree programmes and its graduates have acquitted themselves very wellon the global employment market.

3. Facts About Zimbabwe

The former colonial Rhodesia, Zimbabwe, attained independence from BritishColonial rule on 18 April 1980.

3.1 Languages

Shona and Ndebele are the two major indigenous languages while English isthe commercial language.


3.2 Population

The country has a population of about 12 million people while Hararespopulation stands at about 2 million people.

3.3 Location

Zimbabwe is situated in South Central Africa. Lying between the Limpopoand Zambezi Rivers, it is bordered by Zambia to the North and North-Westand by Botswana to the South-West. South Africa lies to the South, while tothe East and North-East of Zimbabwe is Mozambique. Zimbabwe lies entirelyto the north of the Tropic of Capricorn.

3.4 Physical Features

AREA

The total area Is 390 245 square kilometres, about three times the size ofEngland, or nearly as big as California.

ALTITUDE

Almost the whole country lies more than 300 m above sea level.

CLIMATE

The climate is generally warm. Daily average sunshine ranges from about fourto ten hours all year round. The days are usually bright and sunny and thenights are clear and cool. The summer months (main rain season) are Decemberto April, while the period May to August makes up the winter. The periodSeptember to November (hot season) is generally very hot and dry.

4. Overview of the University

The University of Zimbabwe is the oldest, largest and premier institution ofhigher learning in Zimbabwe. It has, since its establishment in 1955, producedknowledge workers with internationally sought after qualifications andreputation in all areas of academic and professional activities.

The University is in Harare, Zimbabwes capital city and industrial hub. Harareis also home to most of the diplomatic missions accredited to Zimbabwe. TheUniversity is situated about five kilometres north of the city centre and is set inthe leafy and beautiful Mount Pleasant suburb. Transport from the MainCampus to and fro the Harare International Airport and the city is readilyavailable in the form of taxis and commuter omnibuses. The College of HealthSciences is situated at Parirenyatwa Hospital, about 3 kilometres from the MainCampus.

The University of Zimbabwe is a comprehensive institution offering a widerange of taught undergraduate and postgraduate degrees as well as higherdegrees by research (MPhil. and DPhil) across its ten Faculties. The Facultiesare Agriculture, Arts, College of Health Sciences, Commerce, Education,Engineering, Law, Science, Social Studies and Veterinary Science. In additionto the Faculties, there are also a number of research oriented centres andspecialized institutes. Its 12 000 plus students are well served by excellent andaccessible professors, a challenging curriculum, opportunities for research,internships, campus leadership positions and other hands-on learning thatprepare international students for professional and personal success in a globalenvironment. In addition to student-based research, members of the academicstaff are involved in research of national and international relevance.

The Universitys commitment to maintaining highly recognized internationalstandards in research and teaching is also reflected in its development ofcooperation programs with other dynamic higher education institutions thatare similarly aware of the benefits that accrue from the internationalization ofhigher education. To date, the University has established numerous strategicacademic alliances with institutions in Asia, America, and Europe and, of courseAfrica.

5. Study Programmes

The Faculties offer a wide range of programmes at the degree, diploma andcertificate levels. Most undergraduate programmes combine compulsoryelements and electives or options, and for some, a dissertation or substantialproject is required. For all taught graduate programmes, a dissertation ismandatory.

Teaching is usually through lectures and tutorials at the undergraduate level.For graduates, seminars form the predominant mode of teaching. Courses areoffered on a full-time or part-time basis depending upon the programme.

5.1 Research Degrees

The university offers tuition in a broad range of higher degrees by research.The principal research degree awards are MPhil and DPhil. These programmesprovide training in specialist subject areas culminating in the conclusions ofthe work being presented in a thesis. Supervisors are assigned to students andassist them to design the research topic and thereafter with the developmentof the research project.

In addition to student-based research, members of the academic staff areinvolved in research of national and or international relevance. All Departmentsand Faculties hold regular research seminars where internal and externalspeakers present their latest ideas and findings on different research areas. Theseminars also provide an opportunity for the exchange of ideas betweenresearch staff and students across Departments and Faculties, thus creating alively research culture.

Some research students are offered opportunities to assist with theundergraduate teaching programmes of the Departments. At times, GraduateTeaching Assistantships are made available to the research students, thuscreating additional income for the students and making it possible for theirfull integration into the life of their Departments and Faculties.

5.2 Academic Year

The academic year is divided into two semesters. The first semester runs fromlate August to early December. The second semester begins in late February toearly June. Orientation to introduce students to the University takes place during


the first semester. In addition, an orientation programme for all newinternational students is organized by the International Relations Office.Occasional students can join the university at the beginning of either semester.A special orientation programme is arranged for such students as they arrive atthe university.


6 Academic Services

6.1 The Library

The universitys Main Library contains most of the Arts, Engineering, Scienceand Social Sciences books and journals. It also contains a cluster of networkedcomputers for general use. Branch libraries covering Law, Education, Medicine,Geography, Rural and Urban Planning and Veterinary Science are located inthe same buildings as the Departments and Faculties that they serve.

Students are, therefore, assured of access to the books that they need. TheMain Library has over a million items in stock and subscribes to a large numberof periodicals. The library also provides access to a wide range of electronicsources of information.

6.2 The Computing Service

The Universitys Computer Centre is responsible for the computinginfrastructure in the university. There is a communications network that links


local computers together and to the rest of the world via the internet. Lecturerooms, laboratories and computer labs are well-equipped and maintained.The study facilities include a state-of-the-art wireless network zone for portablecomputer users. The Universitys IT system provides access towards word-processing, electronic mail and world-wide web. In fact, the whole universityis computer networked.

University of Zimbabwe students increasingly use electronic mail and theinternet as a means of communication and all are eligible for an e-mail account.

6.3 Students with Disabilities

The university is committed to the promotion of equal opportunities and accessand welcomes applications from students with disabilities. The staff of theDisability Resources Centre provides support and information for studentswith disabilities and is always ready to discuss any issues or concerns that thestudents might have.

7.1 Admission Requirements

Generally, non-Zimbabwean students can join the University as non-degreeor occasional students for which they can enroll for one semester or seekadmission for full degree studies.

If accepted, prospective students have to prove their financial self-sufficiencybefore being allowed entry into the country. Application forms are normallydispatched after receipt of a non-refundable application fee which is currentlyUS$70. 7.2 Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for international students are currently pegged at US$2 500.00(two thousand five hundred United States dollars) only per semester.


8 Student Life

8.1 Accommodation

While there is a high demand for places in University student residences, effortsare made to ensure that international students are accommodated on campus.Alternatively, the University provides help, in an advisory role, in securingprivate accommodation for international students who would have failed tobe accommodated in University residences.

International students are normally accommodated in the University studentshalls of residence together with the local students. The arrangement gives theinternational and local students the opportunity to know each other and makefriends. Most of the student halls of residence are situated on campus. Inaddition to the halls, there are self-contained and self-catering apartmentsreserved for especially international postgraduate students. Each of theapartments comprises a bedroom, lounge, kitchen and bathroom. The provisionof board and lodging is a self-supporting service and prospective students must


ensure that they have adequate funds available to pay for the fees due in thisregard. In the halls of residence, meals are provided in a dining hall at veryreasonable prices. Students accommodated in self-catering apartments may, ifthey wish, have meals in the nearby dining halls.

The University provides basic furniture in the rooms and public areas in eachresidence/apartment or flat but students have to provide their own beddingand toiletries.

8.2 Student Organizations

There is a lot more to being a student than studying at the University ofZimbabwe. Join the numerous active student associations, societies andorganizations and the numerous sporting activities and experience the richand varied social life on campus.

The University has over 50 student organizations - clubs and societies oncampus. The organizations are affiliated to the University of Zimbabwe StudentsUnion. As an international student at the University of Zimbabwe, you becomea member of the Students Union. You can also join its affiliate, the University


of Zimbabwe International Students Association, an independent, democratic,non-profit organization run for and by University of Zimbabwe internationalstudents. Student democracy at the University of Zimbabwe operates at manylevels, from membership and participation in the activities of the variousstudents organizations to student representation at Faculty and departmentlevels.

8.3 Student Health and Counselling

The campus has student health facilities with general practitioners, nurses,psychiatrists and psychologists. All undergraduate students are required to havemedical cover (insurance). The students clinic on campus provides full primarycare facilities as well as contraceptive, immunization and preventive healtheducation systems. The University also has in place, well established counselingstructures at departmental and faculty level to which students can turn to foradvice in academic, financial or personal matters.

8.4 Sports

The Universitys Department of Sports manages a wide range of sportingactivities that cater for everyone from the very committed sportsperson tothose wishing to participate for exercise and enjoyment. You can choosefrom many different sports activities offered by the department ranging fromsoccer (men and women), basketball, tennis, squash, rugby, swimming,cricket, golf to handball, volleyball, dance and theatre.


8.5 Security

Zimbabwe is one of the safest and most peaceful countries in Africa, and indeedthe world. It is absolutely safe to travel to any part of the country. However,safe as it is, the following precautionary steps are still important.

STREET CRIME Pickpockets and bag snatchers, particularly in the Citycentre and downtown. Defence is the same anywhere. Avoid dangling yourbag/purse from your shoulder. Wear your purse strap over your chest andhold your bag close

Do not leave your laptop and valuables in a vehicle parked in a car park

It is always safer to travel with an acquaintance than alone

Be observant with everything around you

If you are travelling late at night go in a group. If the distance is a longwalk, use a taxi

Remember to lock all windows and doors of your accommodation even ifyou are only going to be away for a few minutes

Do not display items which would be attractive to thieves on windows

8.6 Study Buddy Programme

At the beginning of each semester new international students are introducedto Buddies a local student or a senior international student or groups oflocal and/or international students who take responsibility for introducingthe University of Zimbabwe, the city of Harare and Zimbabwe in general tothe new international students. By joining the buddy programme, you quicklyget to know other students, make friends and settle in. What kind of help canyou expect from the buddy programme?

A question and answer session where your queries may be answered about,e.g. life at the University, public transport, shopping facilities in and aroundthe University and the City

The University also arranges a special events programme for internationalstudents such as tour of tourist attractions, film evenings and the monthlyinternational Coffee Hour


9. Pre-DepartureArrangements

*Please make sure that you getconfirmation of acceptance to theUniversity before making arrangementsfor departure. Once you have received yourletter of acceptance to the University of Zimbabwe, make the followingarrangements before you leave your country of residence.

Sign and return your letter of acceptance to the Admissions Office to validateyour entry into the University

Ensure that you have a valid passport, or else, apply for a valid passport

Make sure that you have the necessary funds to cover your university tuitionand living expenses

Secure a valid study permit (student visa).

9.1 Study Permit (Student Visa)

International students are encouraged to apply for a University of Zimbabwestudy permit at the Zimbabwean Embassy or mission nearest to them beforeleaving the country of origin. Without a study permit, you may be refusedentry into Zimbabwe and the University of Zimbabwe may not register you asa student. While it is strongly recommended that study/students permits besecured before departure for the University of Zimbabwe, it is however possible,at the discretion of the Immigration Department in Zimbabwe, to get the visaapplication processed on arrival in Zimbabwe. In such cases, the student securesa temporary permit at the point of entry into Zimbabwe, and is given (at thepoint of entry) a fixed period of time within which to secure the student permit.

To apply for a student permit, you will need the following:

Residence Permit application form (IF5) fully completed and attested by aCommissioner of Oaths. The application form is obtainable from the nearestZimbabwean Embassy or from the Department of Immigration offices inHarare

Letter of acceptance from the University of Zimbabwe

Proof of accommodation e.g. undertaking by institution to provideaccommodation

Chest X-ray report

9.2 Orientation Programme

It is advisable that you arrive in time for the Orientation programme that isnormally organized for about five days immediately before the commencementof the academic year or semester so as to:

10 Experience Zimbabwe from theUniversity Of Zimbabwe

At the University of Zimbabwe, you can combine high quality education withunforgettable outdoor experiences, both summer and winter. Harare is knownfor its outstanding nature and places of social interest. All these are accessiblefrom the University of Zimbabwe. Below are a few examples of places whereyou can enjoy nature at its best, or visit the numerous restaurants close to theUniversity for a meal or cup of coffee.

10.1 Tours in and around Harare

LION AND CHEETAH PARK AND LAKECHIVERO GAME PARK

Get a chance to see the wilds of Africa righton the outskirts of the City. The Lion &Cheetah Park hosts big cats and some rareand nocturnal species. At Lake Chivero, youwill be in the company of free ranging gameand may even glimpse a shy White Rhino.

KUIMBA SHIRI AND SNAKE PARK

Take a look at another aspect of Zimbabweswildlife, by visiting the hundreds of exotic and local bird species at KuimbaShiri on the shores of Lake Chivero.

MUKUVISI WOODLANDS

Only 15 minutes from the city center, callin to see Elephants, Impalas, Ostrichsand Giraffes in natural woodlandsettings.

CHENGETA SAFARI LODGE

MBIZI GAME PARK

Mbizi Game Park lies only 22km fromHarare city centre and only 10km from Harare International Airport, it is aprivate game park that offers a rare opportunity to get away from the hussleand bussle of the city. They can eitherenjoy a meal in their tea garden or come with a picnic basket and have a braaidown at the waterfront area where there are braai stands available. DOMBOSHAWA CAVES

Domboshava cave lies 35 kilometers north-east of Harare and was proclaimeda national monument in 1936, covering only 1 acre. The physical boundary ofthe site was extended in 1996 to cover 300 hectares. The proclaimed area nowencloses rock paintings, late Stone-Age deposits, a geological tunnel (whichhas acquired cultural significance through time), sacred forest, and spectaculargranite geological formations.

EPWORTH BALANCING ROCKS

Situated about 12km south-east from Harare city centre, The Balancing Rocksare a geological formation, perfectly balanced without other supports. Theywere created when ancient granite is exposed to weathering, and softer rockssurrounding them erode away.


THE NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS

National Botanic Garden of Zimbabwe issituated about 4 km North of Harare CityCentre in the suburb of Alexandra Park. It alsohouses the National Herbarium ofZimbabwe. The gardens have an area ofalmost 7 square kilometers. Initiallyestablished as a recreation area in 1902, itbecame the National Botanic Gardens in1962 under the direction of Dr. Hyram

Wilder. Half of the gardens are devoted to indigenous plants from Zimbabweswoodlands and include most of the 750 species found in the country. Otherareas contain plants typical to the African continent including rare andendangered species, as well as exotics from South America, India, Australiaand the Far East.

THE ZIMBABWE NATIONAL HEROES ACRE

National Heroes Acre or simply Heroes Acre is aburial ground and national monument inHarare.The 57-acre (230,000 m2) site is situatedon a ridge seven kilometers from the city centrealong the main Harare-Bulawayo Road
