JUNTOS PARA SIEMPREEmotivo homenaje de Chucho Valdeacutes a su padre Bebo Valdeacutes

No fue el primero pero no seraacute el uacuteltimo homenaje de Chuchoacute Valdeacutes a su padre Bebo Don Bebo como carintildeosamente lo menciona en ocasiones y es que en el hablar de Chucho en sus dedos en su fiacutesico en su mirada encontramos un homenaje continuo a su padre Chucho es amor a Bebo y asiacute lo demostroacute en la pasada noche del 17 de Octubre en el belliacutesimo ho-menaje rendido en la ciudad de Benalmaacutedena mag-niacutefico lugar cuyo Excmo Ayuntamiento organizoacute este histoacuterico y maravilloso evento

Benalmaacutedena fue testigo de los 4 uacuteltimos antildeos que Bebo y Chucho Chucho y Bebo compartieron antildeos de felicidad plena para ambos Por ello no habiacutea mejor escenario para tal evento para sacar a relucir las maacutes sentidas emociones fue una noche maacutegica donde Chucho junto a sus fieles Afrocuban Messen-gers tocaron con la belliacutesima perfeccioacuten como les es habitual destacando las amistades que acudieron sin pensarlo para colaborar en el merecido homenaje

El concierto inicioacute como no podiacutea ser de otro modo

con Chucho al piano tocando la melodiacutea del tema ldquoBebordquo que compuso para su padre Yaroldi Abreu con su poderiacuteo en las tumbadoras dejoacute boquiabier-tos a los asistentes con uno de esos solos que hacen clavar todas las miradas en eacutel

Pronto Yamila Hernaacutendez subioacute al escenario fue la primera en ser acompantildeada por Chucho con el bo-lero ldquoQueacute te pediacuterdquo magniacutefica melodiosa y dulce voz la de la cantante cubana

La magia de la noche ya tocaba las almas de cada uno de los espectadores cuando Chucho rindioacute ho-menaje a su abuela Caridad Amaro tocando el tema compuesto en su honor

A continuacioacuten el flamenco y la muacutesica afrocubana recibioacute a la fuerza de la naturaleza Genara Corteacutes ldquoBeacutesame muchordquo en su flamenca y gitana voz levantoacute a un puacuteblico que quedoacute impresionado ante tal der-roche asiacute como por su perfecta conexioacuten con Chucho terminando el tema con un scat flamenco soberbio

La creatividad demostrada empiacutericamente una y otra vez a lo largo de la carrera de Chucho Valdeacutes volvioacute a ser protagonista cuando el tema dedicado a su es-posa argentina ldquoTango Timbardquo sonoacute en el teatro del Tivoli de Benalmaacutedena Una amalgama de ritmos con diversas raiacuteces fusionados a la perfeccioacuten en un Tan-go cubano espectacular

Celia Flores fue una amiga maacutes que quiso participar y compartir su arte con Chucho cantando ldquoVete de mirdquo un ldquofilinrdquo aflamencado muy sentido el que entonoacute la hija pequentildea de Marisol

Uno de los momentos maacutes emotivos de la gala fue la aparicioacuten en la tarima de la exitosa cantante Estrella Morente introducieacutendola una proyeccioacuten de imaacute-genes en la pantalla de fondo de escenario de Estrella cantando la cancioacuten Lily con Bebo para la inigualable peliacutecula de Trueba y Mariscal ldquoChico y Ritardquo A continu-acioacuten se dispuso a cantar el mismo tema con Chucho acompantildeaacutendola al piano el alma de Bebo estaba pre-sente todos pudimos sentirlo la magia del ldquoCaballoacutenrdquo volviacutea a hacer su presencia en un escenario ldquoBebo Rode Againrdquo

Como despedida Javier Ojeda cantante de Danza In-visible conjunto de gran eacutexito en la deacutecada de los 90rsquos en Espantildea aportoacute un rico Blues e introdujo el tema despedida del concierto Lagrimas Negras de Miguel Matamoros en el cual todos los artistas participantes pusieron su nota de despedida

En resumen una gala donde afloraron las emociones donde el puacuteblico ademaacutes de disfrutar de un precioso evento colaboroacute mediante la entrada con dos causas beneacuteficas muy importantes CUDECA (cuidados para el caacutencer) y Una Luz Para Ezequiel

Bebo Valdeacutes seguro estaraacute bien feliz en alguacuten lugar de la eternidad del pentagrama celestial de recibir esta muestra de carintildeo en agradecimiento a una vida plena llena de generosidad y amor Chucho y Bebo allaacute donde se encuentre permaneceraacuten Juntos para siempre

iquestQueacute decir de Chucho Valdeacutes que no se haya dicho ya Jesuacutes Dionisio Valdeacutes Rodriacuteguez conocido mundialmente como Chucho tiene en su historial ser el responsable de revolucionar la muacutesica cubana tanto de baile como de concierto gracias a su creatividad y al grupo del cual fue fundador y director los mundialmente conocidos IRAKERE Con ellos y sus experimentos musicales se pro-dujo un punto de inflexioacuten que ha marcado la evolucioacuten de la muacutesica cubana manifestaacutendose hoy diacutea su efecto en la Timba

ISM- iquestQueacute sentimientos afloraron en el concierto

Ch- Lo primero fue que era algo que mi padre se mereciacutea por todo el aporte que eacutel ha hecho Por otra parte los artistas que fueron voluntariamente por ayudar hubo un nivel de compenetracioacuten de com-prensioacuten y de ayuda que fue increiacuteble Javier Ojeda que es un artista muy popular por acaacute Genara Cor-teacutes Estrella Morente hizo maravillas y Celia Flores muy buena tambieacuten todo el mundo dio el maacuteximo tambieacuten mis muacutesicos Fue un homenaje muy bonito y emotivo

ISM iquestFue el primer homenaje

Ch- No el primero fue el antildeo pasado en el festival de jazz de Barcelona en Rumba para Bebo

ISM iquestEl motivo de ser en Benalmaacutedena se debe a su conexioacuten y la de su padre con la tierra

Ch- Es tremenda tanto que tuve la suerte de com-partir los uacuteltimos 4 antildeos que fue cuando yo me vine definitivamente para acaacutehellip Muy parecida a Cuba por el mar los mariscos empezamos a hacer comidas cubanashellip Esos uacuteltimos antildeos miacute padre lo pasoacute muy feliz siempre lo pasoacute muy feliz pero esos fueron los maacutes felices porque trajimos la familia y estuvimos con eacutel hasta el final

ISM Defiacutename a Bebo Valdeacutes

Ch- A veces algunas personas parecen un poco exa-geradas cuando uno habla de lo de uno de su familia pero yo te diriacutea sin temor a equivocarme que Bebo Valdeacutes era el padre perfecto Perfecto en todos los sentidos eso es todo lo que te puedo decir Con eacutel

nunca hubo un detalle de nada negativo ni nada todo fue alegriacutea todo fue trabajar hacer las cosas lle-varse bien con todo el mundo el amor y la unidad de la familiahellip Vaya eso para miacute es lo maacuteximo Y luego fue mi maestro ademaacutes de ese padre fue mi maestro en la vida tambieacuten

ISM iquestTuvo alguna dificultad en su carrera por ser hijo de Bebo

Ch- Yo empeceacute a trabajar con mi papaacute cuando teniacutea 15 antildeos muy joven y nunca pasoacute eso que hubiera alguacuten tipo de comparacioacuten en primer lugar porque es imposible comparar a un alumno con el maestro que lo estaacute ensentildeando Segundo porque despueacutes al pasar el tiempo yo siempre me he sentido como que soy un producto de su trabajo y asiacute creo que lo ha visto la mayoriacutea de las personas Pero nunca una di-ficultad

ISM iquestCabriacutea homenaje de Chucho Valdeacutes a su padre en un disco con el sonido de la Orquesta Sabor de Cuba

Ch- Yo estoy trabajando en eso ya pero muy len-tamente porque quiero que quede a la altura de la Orquesta Sabor de Cuba de la cual yo fui el pianista precisamente todo el tiempo Eso es un trabajo que a miacute me resulta faacutecil porque yo fui parte de la orquesta y se coacutemo sonaba coacutemo haciacutean los arreglos Bebo y parte de los arreglos me lo ensentildeaba a escribirloshellip


Pero el personal que va a trabajar en el disco ya seraacute escogido y eso pero ese disco va a ser

ISM Le voy a mencionar profesores que usted ha tenido y por favor diacutegame lo que maacutes destaque de sus ensentildeanzas

1 Oscar Boufatique

Ch- Bueno fue mi primer maestro de solfeo de teo-riacutea e inclusive de piano Oscar me toma a miacute cuando yo no teniacutea edad para entrar en el conservatorio En-treacute en el conservatorio como a los 9 antildeos en cuarto de piano hellip(risas) Yo llegueacute afinaito al conservatorio

Se cuenta que a los 3 antildeos Bebo puso a Cachao de espaldas y a usted con tres antildeos a tocar el piano para ver si se daba cuenta que quieacuten to-caba teniacutea tres antildeoshellip

Ch- Mira yo era muy nintildeo eso no lo tengo registra-do lo que seacute es la aneacutecdota que papaacute cuenta pero no teniacutea uso de razoacuten Vagamente me acuerdo de tocar ante un sentildeor de espaldas pero despueacutes no seacute queacute dijo lo que seacute es que estaban los dos muertos de la risahellip (risas)

2 Leo Brouwer

Ch- Leo fue mejor dicho es una persona muy im-portante en mi vida musical Yo conociacute a Leo cuando teniacutea 19 antildeos y eacutel 20 o 21 Nos conocimos inciden-talmente Eacutel veniacutea de la Julliard de Nueva York y yo estaba tocando en el antildeo 61 en un hotel que se lla-maba Habana Riviera y estaba vaciacuteo Yo empeceacute tocar una sonata de Mozart Habiacutea una mesa con cuatro personas y una de ellas era Leo que no lo conociacute Al terminar me aplaudieron muchiacutesimo y penseacute ldquoqueacute raro en un lugar como este y tocando una sonata de Mozarthellip aquiacute la gente viene a escuchar Cha cha chaacute

y esas cosasrdquohellip Despueacutes me invitoacute a la mesa me dijo ldquooye queacute lindo Has tocado un Mozart con un gran estilohelliprdquo Nos presentamos le pregunteacute si era muacutesico y dijo ldquosiacute vengo de estudiar de allaacutehelliprdquo le pregunteacute su nombre y me dijo ldquoLeo Brouwerrdquo le contesteacute ldquoyo soy Chucho Valdeacutesrdquo Eacutel era desconocido como yo Me dijo ldquoes raro que un pianista como tuacute que toque tan bien Mozart y jazz esteacute aquiacuterdquo yo tambieacuten toqueacute jazzhellip Ya nos despedimos eso fue en el 61

Dos antildeos despueacutes se formoacute una orquesta muy impor-tante en Cuba que se llamaba la Orquesta del Teatro musical Yo saliacutea de trabajar de donde me conocioacute Leo del Hotel Habana Riviera y se me presenta un sentildeor diciendo que estaba formando una orquesta muy importante que va a hacer todo tipo de muacutesica y estaban buscando un pianista que toque lo mismo jazz que claacutesico que cubanohellip Y Leo Brouwer le reco-mendoacute que fueran a verlo porque eacutel va a ser uno de los directores De ahiacute me fui al teatro musical con Leo y empeceacute a estudiar con eacutel armoniacutea contrapunto or-questacioacutenhellip de todo durante 4 antildeos

Deacutejame decirte que Leo el antildeo pasado escribioacute un concierto para piano y orquesta en cuatro movimien-tos y me lo dedicoacute Y el domingo antes pasado ese concierto lo toqueacute con la orquesta sinfoacutenica dirigida por Leo en la Habana A estas alturas mantenemos una comunicacioacuten musical tremenda Tremendo con-cierto para piano y orquesta que se lo toqueacute hace dos domingos tremenda obra y ademaacutes un concierto que normalmente es a tres movimientos lo puso en cuatro El teatro teniacutea una capacidad para 5 mil per-sonas y se quedaron algunos sin entradas

3 Su Madre

Ch- Mi madre maacutes bien seguiacutea las oacuterdenes de Bebo

Era como su lugar teniente Cuando Bebo no estaba ella se encargaba de los horarios de estudios que fue-ran como teniacutean que ser que no fallara en practicar el piano y eso Aprendiacute a acompantildear a cantantes con ella que era una cantante bastante buena la teniacutea que acompantildear en fiestas

ISM iquestEs complicado acompantildear a un cantante

Ch- Yo pienso que es mucho maacutes complicado ser un buen acompantildeante de cualquier artista que ser solis-ta porque el solista hace lo que siente y lo que quie-re pero cuando estaacutes de acompantildeante tienes que adaptarte a las especialidades del cantante servirle de sastre o como el que le pone la cama para que se sienta coacutemodo ese es un trabajo bien delicado

Ch- Mi padre fue inteligentiacutesimo dijo ldquotuacute vas a apren-der claacutesico en la escuela pero el piano cubano el de jazz el piano de internacional lo vas a aprender con-migordquo Y a veces me repasaba las lecciones del con-servatorio pero trabajaacutebamos mucho maacutes lo que era la muacutesica cubana los danzones la muacutesica surameri-cana de Brasil la muacutesica de Venezuela el joropo las cosas mexicanashellip Todo en general Bebo deciacutea ldquoYo voy a trabajar esto y tuacute vas a trabajar la teacutecnica en la escuela y despueacutes vamos a juntar todo estordquo Y asiacute fue

ISM Era exigente su padre

Ch- Muchachohellip (risas) Don Bebo Don Bebo era Ya Yo recuerdo un domingo que yo estaba prepa-raacutendome porque los domingos iacutebamos al cine a me-diodiacutea estaba jovencito y ya yo estaba vestido y me dice ldquobueno iquesttuacute ya estudiaste piano iquestYa tuacute sabes la leccioacutenrdquo Yo le dije ldquoSiacute como nordquo Me respondioacute a continuacioacuten ldquosieacutentate ahora mismo que quiero oiacuter-lordquo Y la toqueacute mal Me dijo ldquoVaya quitaacutendose la ropa vaacuteyase desmontando y sieacutentese a estudiar y despueacutes que usted termine iraacute al cinerdquo Y era asiacute todo era asiacute pero eso hoy se agradece

ISM Se dice que Irakere era coacutemo una escuela

iquestLe sirvioacute esas ensentildeanzas que usted recibioacute para posteriormente ser buen profesor

Ch- Yo lo que he aplicado es todo lo que aprendiacute so-bre todo la forma de ensentildear Pero tambieacuten hay otra cosa Yo paralelamente al piano estudieacute la carrera de magisterio y eso te da pedagogiacutea Coacutemo transmitir los conocimientos es muy complicado porque no todas las personas razonan igual no tienen el mismo nivel de capacidad y en el magisterio tuacute aprendes coacutemo tratar las individualidades y asiacute yo he trabajado con los muacutesicos cada uno con sus virtudes y sus defectos y siempre usando el estilo que me ensentildearon y me ha dado buenos resultados teniendo buenos alumnos

ISM iquestQueacute hubiera sido de la muacutesica cubana sin la revolucioacuten de Irakere iquestHubiera sido posible la timba el songo y geacuteneros contemporaacuteneos

Ch- Yo te diriacutea que la timba es IRAKERE Irakere es el grupo que lo hizo y eso lo sabe y lo reconocen todos los grupos contemporaacuteneos hoy A partir de Irakere fue que nace la timba cubana Y creo tambieacuten que en todos los sentidos como grupo de muacutesica afro-cubana de concierto o afrocuban jazz o si lo quieren llamar latin jazzhellip Irakere fue que cambioacute todos los paraacutemetros y dio otra perspectiva otra visioacuten Y en la muacutesica popular bailable Irakere fue tambieacuten el grupo que marcoacute el camino a todos los cambios para bien el desarrollo la estructura de los temas los mambos etc Hubo un grupo en los 70rsquos que cambiaron esto en el tipo de muacutesica bailable en el estilo charanga Los Van Van con el Songo pero en Irakere con la Timba en el estilo de grupo con metales fue el grupo que maacutes influyoacute porque influimos no soacutelo en la muacutesica baila-ble sino en la muacutesica de concierto Independiente-mente que los muacutesicos de Irakere no como banda ya que no soacutelo era respetada como banda las individua-lidades de Irakere eran respetadas como muacutesicos que podiacutean tocar cualquier tipo de muacutesica a cualquier ni-vel y eso siacute no lo teniacutean otros grupos en Cuba hasta el momento excepto la orquesta de Arcantildeo de los 40rsquos que tuvo una orquesta de todos estrellas que teniacutea a Cachao Jesuacutes Loacutepezhellip y casi todos los muacutesicos de la orquesta donde estaba Cachao que era quieacuten inven-toacute el mambo por supuestohellip

ISM iquestEntonces usted tiene claro que el inventor del mambo fue Cachao

Ch- Siacute pero hay que tener cuidado Peacuterez Prado usoacute el nombre del Mambo pero el ritmo que usa no es el mismo que usa Cachao y el hermano de Cachao ldquoMa-chordquo El ritmo que hizo Peacuterez Prado era el ritmo para una Big Band con otras cosas pero como geacutenero el mambo lo inventoacute Cachao Israel Loacutepez Lo que hizo Peacuterez Prado que hay que darle un gran meacuterito basado en eso pegoacute a nivel mundial y no se le puede quitar el meacuterito a Peacuterez Prado pero bueno el creador del Mambo Cachao

ISM iquestHabriacutea sido posible Irakere sin Chucho y sin esa influencia de haber conocido las jam session en Cuba con su padre

Ch- Nadie lo hizo antes Por tanto yo creo que habriacutea sido imposible por lo menos hasta ese momento no seacute si en otro momento a alguien se le hubiera ocurri-do algo asiacute pero hasta ese momento no no se le ocu-rrioacute a nadie esa combinacioacuten de muacutesica afrocubana tambores bataacutes el jazzhellip y todas las combinaciones que hicimos nosotros y estructura eso fueron total-mente novedosas y se mantiene

ISM iquestSe usaban sintetizadores en la Orquesta Cu-bana de Muacutesica moderna

Ch- No no existiacutean Se usaban unos oacuterganos electroacute-nicos pero no sintetizadores Empezaron en la deacuteca-da del 70

ISM iquestCoacutemo se le ocurre introducir sintetizadores en Irakere

Ch- Porque estaacutebamos intentando hacer una sono-ridad que fuera contemporaacutenea que tuviera que ver con la sonoridad que en ese momento era internacio-nal Era enriquecer los tambores las raiacuteces afrocuba-nas con sonidos que daban un timbre contemporaacute-neo y asiacute fue se logroacute

ISM iquestFue una apuesta arriesgada incorporar sintetizadores en la muacutesica cubana en aquellos tiempos iquestTuvo miedo a fracasar con ese experi-mento

Ch- Yo teniacutea miedo porque tampoco sabiacutea queacute estaacute-bamos haciendo estaacutebamos haciendo algo pero sin pretensiones Estaacutebamos haciendo algo que queriacutea-mos hacer pero no era ldquovamos a hacer algo nuevordquo no esa no fue la idea ldquoVamos a tocar lo que se nos ocurrerdquo y eso fue lo que se nos ocurrioacute No teniacuteamos idea de lo que iba a pasar con eso siacute tuvimos muchiacute-sima oposicioacuten por parte de los muacutesicos que usaba la muacutesica maacutes tradicional ya que deciacutean que la muacutesica cubana no se tocaba con instrumentos electroacutenicos que el danzoacuten no llevaba guitarra eleacutectrica que el son no llevaba sintetizadores Deciacutea mi maestro ldquoLas tradiciones se rompen pero cuesta trabajordquo Osea tuacute tienes que luchar por tu idea y tienes que ir adelante contra viento y marea y al final me tuvieron que dar la razoacuten

Tambieacuten hay otra cosa que hice el primer triacuteo de jazz sin bateriacutea iexcly lo que me cayoacute arriba fue horrible Yo hice un disco en el antildeo 1972 que se llama ldquoJazz Bataacuterdquo Entonces los suacuteper genios deciacutean ldquoiquestpero tuacute estaacutes loco iquestcoacutemo vas a hacer un triacuteo de jazz sin bateriacuteardquo yo respondiacutea ldquoporque un triacuteo de jazz es lo que hace todo el mundo Un triacuteo de jazz con los bataacutes me da una riacutetmica que es maacutes auteacutentica para mi estilo para las raiacuteces africanas y es lo que yo tengo que hacerrdquo A ellos no les gustoacute y me criticaron muchiacutesimo Hoy es un claacutesico Jazz Bataacute

ISM iquestAhiacute nace el nombre IRAKERE

Ch- Ahiacute nace Irakere porque ya yo veniacutea con la idea un antildeo antes Hubo un tema que le puse Irakere por-que yo teniacutea la idea de coger el triacuteo Jazz Bataacute e irlo


aumentando con metales hasta llegar a donde llega-mos con Irakere Eramos Carlos del Puerto Oscar Val-deacutes y yo solamente El disco jazz bataacute es un reto a la loacutegica del momento

ISM iquestLe queda algo por fusionar

Ch- Siacute quedan muchas cosashellip uff Muchacho hay muchas cositas que hacer que no las voy a decir por-que a lo mejor se le ocurre a otro coger la ideahellip Pero claro vienen de sorpresa

En unos tiempos en los que cada vez que alguien inventaba algo nuevo estaba deseando ponerle un nombre para apoderarse del tiacutetulo del creador del geacutenero tal o cual iquestpor queacute nunca le puso nombre a la muacutesica o ritmos que hizo con Irakere

Porque nosotros no pretendiacuteamos crear ritmos o crear geacuteneros asiacute es mejor Ademaacutes lo creamos sin proponeacuternoslo No dijimos ldquovamos a descubrir un ritmo nuevordquo eso no pasoacute Vamos a hacer muacutesica vamos a elaborar lo que salioacute es lo que estaacutebamos haciendo pero no se nos ocurrioacute ponerle ritmo tal o cual A mi no me gustaba mucho ponerle nombres o apellidos

Nosotros eacuteramos un grupo de muacutesicos que todos te-niacuteamos una forma de pensar muy comuacuten y unos con-

I have been very lucky in my dancing career I never thought that a bailarina like me could end up cho-reographing programs like SYTYCD amp BBC Strictly Come Dancing or teaching and performing in Iceland or Nepal or NY or even choreographing and acting in a blockbuster film like Cuban Fury I try not to do only Congresses or Festival but to put Salsa where it deserves Hopefully one day we will see Salsa (as we dancers know it) in the big screen theatres and big productions For that to happen itrsquos important to work in others fields like TV Radio and Films Even when we do not have the freedom to choreograph the way we want to I still believe that the most important is to get into the industry until one day we can have the op-portunity to create and show Salsa the way it really is But we will never get there unless we compromise on the way In my opinion itrsquos necessary Irsquom afraid Itrsquos like the film Cuban Fury Itrsquos a romantic comedy involving Salsa but the most important itrsquos the love story not the Salsa dancing so despite all our efforts to keep the dance as genuine as possible they had to cut a lot of the dancing out One really good thing about this movie is that every single dancer is from Salsa almost 400 dancers from beginners to professional repre-senting the real club style in the UK It gives this film a lot authenticity I believe

- Select congresses and festivals where you continue participating involved in films preparation and pre-sentation of the ISTD courses for teachers of salsa throughout Europe also represent artists advising and perfecting those dancers skills and represent

them you handle their booking and everything com-plicated prior to events etc you do not stop How do you do

- I think since I have become a mother for the second time I have learned to manage my time a lot better than I used to Itrsquos still a learning process Having chil-dren make your life a bit unpredictable but itrsquos getting easier I try not to get lazy and new projects are always coming my way The Salsa examination for the ISTD is one of the biggest things I have done in the last few years We have designed what I believe to be an exam that combines the knowledge that every Salsa teacher should have a complete understanding of the dance and its different styles always respecting the impro-visation and following and leading techniques that characterise this dance Irsquom currently running a teach-ers training program in Germany and I will start an-other one in the UK in February 2015 Other countries

are now quite interested in it too I still choreograph regularly for the BBC as well as attending some of the Salsa congresses and Festivals something that I still enjoy very much But the newest and biggest project has been joining Cat 7 Productions

- What are your feelings about representation activity and why did you decide to give this important profes-sional step with Cat 7 Productions

- I felt really honour when Marcos asked me to join his company He is one of the best in the business I work for myself most of the time but I will work for Marcos with my eyes closed anytime He is extremely profes-sional and honest and with massive experience in the music and dance industry I think I can contribute to Cat 7 Productions with my experience in the dance world Irsquom very excited to get involved with the rep-resentation and promotion of artists Itrsquos something

new for me but I love challenges Our dancers and musicians are some of the best in the business and I couldnrsquot be more proud to represent them We have a selection of talented artists with very special and unique styles from SalsaContemporary to Kizomba to flamenco to pure Salsa etchellipAs you said itrsquos a big professional step in my career and I hope that I will learn and catch up with Marcos soon

- And you Marcos has also had a lifetime of profession-al experience in Banking and International Finance Treasury of General Motors own business of importexport image consulting and brand What hap-pened to finally devote yourself to representing art-ists and why you believe along with Susana that both make artists and promoters dreams to become true

Itrsquos curious because some time ago (many years ago indeed laughs) I was looking for a new challenge to

get involved and met an extraordinary salsa singer who was looking for a manager to take care of his ca-reer thatrsquos was the beginning Then some other latin styles artists and bands wanted to work with me so it was necessary to create the Agency that now include flamenco artists too Because dance comes along with music mainly in latin genres I start selecting and managing great dancers as well to close circle At that moment knowing that Susana was coming back to Madrid I thought that she would be the very best partner I could ever dreamed of A lovely person first and then a great artist She said earlier that she wanted to learn and catch up with me I would die to catch her and dance just a bit just a little bit like her she is amazing In the other hand Susana is so active always going ahead and full of knowledge about the dance world so Irsquom really happy of working with her Together any goal will be easier to reach

- From your point of view what differentiates Cat 7 Productions from other management agencies

Well we should mention professionalism seriousness and organization skill but mainly because we first look for promoters insterest instead of just our own only This makes a real difference because we are al-ways looking to team up and work with the promot-ers to establish long relationships Thatrsquos the key word ldquoteamrdquo all together seeking the same goal excel-lence Being a ldquoone stop solution agencyrdquo is another advantage for promoters as they can book instructors bands and singers in just one place as these three ele-ments are the essence of a Dance Congress or Festival There is no need to go to 3 different agencies to find them nor contact each artist one by one All these besides the great atmosphere created from our art-

ist in any event which for us is more important than anything else This is the reason why our artists always socialize with the public after a show or social dance in case of our dancersinstructors Singers or bands al-ways do the same after a concert The personal contact and sharing the experience is extremely important for the people attending to an event itrsquos the opposite of what we called ldquostar syndromerdquo that gives benefits to nobody not even for the artists themselves Susana always felt very strongly about this matter and she made it clear to our team of artists After performing worldwide she really knows what dance congress pro-moters want and need

- Something that caught my attention is that not only organize events for yourselves but also organize them for promoters and producers from any country in the

world with the advantage of avoiding all the stress and initial complications How does this work

Irsquove been involved in the organization of several fes-tivals and events in Spain but when Susana joined the agency letrsquos say that she opened my eyes widely (laughs) and it was an answer to a very simple ques-tion Why donrsquot we do the same in any country She said you take care of all matters concerning market-ing worldwide because you studied that and Irsquove got the necessary experience to take care of the artistic direction involving the artists for the events Itrsquos easy Marcos the same than in Spain but in any other coun-try And how could I refuse such a great and simple point (laughs) Most of the times things are as com-plicated as we made them it only needs the person next to you to say that something can be easily done for you to realize that itrsquos true This way any person who wants to organize an event and does not want to get crazy with all work and stress prior to it just talk to us give us the idea of what you want and we will full make it happen Itrsquos a great advantage for people involved in serious showbusiness

- Finally because I would stay hours talking with you (laughs) What is the message you want to send to artists and moreover those who wish to be part of showbusiness

Be honest be serious and love what you do Remem-ber that everybody must go through several steps to success and there are no shortcuts Imagine feel and take action thatrsquos the way Respect everybody around even if their beliefs are not the same than yours and finally empathize with people step into the shoes of others because then you will understand their needs Do not chase your dreams as everybody says JUST CATCH THEM Insist that I could spend hours chatting with this pair of high caliber professionals that drive innovation and own creation into the world of entertainment music amp dance and event organization Teamwork is their mot-to as if they were like a big family of artists promoters and agency itself because they are convinced this is the way to live dreams and together achieve amazing

Dancing Salsa in Cairo with Amr

Amr Kasseb started dancing in 2007 thanks to a friend that took him to a dance class At that moment he got a feeling of excitement and fun Even though he is an actor he found in dancing the very way to express himself

First he knew how to dance and then he started teaching others which is something he likes doing

People in Cairo are used to Salsa music and dancing and people out of this city are accepting it more and more Salsa music was introduced in Egypt 20 years ago

We were a group of friends and thought to do some-thing nice for the people so we did our 1st festival and it was the start Despite the money loss we de-cided to do it again at that point I decided to create ldquoAfroLatin Egyptrdquo and continue with the festivals

iquestWhat dancing gives to you

It gave me and gives different feelings according to the dance but mainly being in different level of en-joyment

iquestWhat do you want to express with your dancing

Irsquom just expressing myself and the way I feel the mu-sic

iquestDo you feel butterflies on stage

Usually I do

iquestAny funny experience while dancing in front of an audienceOnce I was doing a demo after a class and the girl as-sisting me was so nervous so at one of the moves she did something wrong and I nearly fell down and she screamed So it was a bit funny and embarrassing as well

iquestYou lost money last year but here you are again organizing this festival aware of the risk it implies why

Mainly Irsquom not looking for gaining money from the festival I just wanna do something nice for people so with the loss at some point I thought of stopping the festival but seeing the people happiness and smiles on the festival day was more than enough to give me the will and power to do it again

iquestDoes your family support you somehow in this

Yes my family usually helps a bit in doing some tasks

but generally I donrsquot try to make load on them

iquestYou are also an actor do you think it helps you to be a better dancer

I think it adds a bit to me as a dancer so yes it makes me a bit better

iquestWhat type of music do you prefer for dancing as a professional And which one when you go out with a girl

Dancing as a professional mostly I prefer (Kizomba Semba Zouk and Tango) When I go out with a girl I prefer slow classic or oldies just something smooth that suites the mood

Tell us about the musicians that play with you in your Sextet

It is a great pleasure to play music with the members of my Sextet all of whom are master musicians Ro-berto Riveron from Holguin Cuba plays bass Among other accomplishments he was a founding member of the legendary Cuban group Klimax and played and toured with the Grammy Award-winning band Cu-banismo for six years David Restivo who plays piano with the band was a member of one of the first im-portant Latin jazz groups in Canada Memo Acevedorsquos band Acevedo now lives in New York Dave is one of the top-call jazz pianists in the city

Jalidan Ruiz is a master percussionist from Santiago de Cuba He plays congas with the band but plays all the percussion instruments very well Amhed Mitchel plays drum-kit and is also a wonderful composer Luis Deniz plays alto sax Charlie Parker is his main influ-ence but he plays in a very contemporary swinging style

iquestDo you think music is important to society

Music seems to reflect the times and beliefs which we are experiencing as a society It is important as a means of expression and as a link to our collective past

I saw an interview recently in which Michael Tilson-Thomas the conductor of the San Francisco Sym-phony Orchestra mentioned how music in the time of Leonardo Da Vinci was an expression of that timesrsquo way of praising God and their beliefs about the struc-ture of their universe This music was an attempt to aurally depict the visible movements of the planets and stars or the ldquoMusic of the Spheresrdquo

Similarly when you listen to the modern jazz of the 40rsquos and 50rsquos Bebop I think the musicrsquos exciting qual-ity and brashness is a natural reflection of a Post-War African-American expression of pride and artistic ex-perimentation

Roland Hunter started learning music in his early teens and now at 44 he wants to improve his skills in music composition since he plays his own material along with covers Even though he loves giving pri-vate lessons one of his aims is to teach music at any university in Toronto where he lives with his wife Barbara and his cats

When listening to the classic New York City Salsa mu-sic of the 1960rsquos and 70rsquos I enjoy thinking about these largely Puerto-Rican bands who so loved and emu-lated Cuban music but also included elements of the society in which they were living such as RampB Soul and also their own traditional Puerto-Rican rhythms

iquestWhat is the difference between your first album and the second one

There are two main differences Ingrid Although I like the first album it was my first Latin-Jazz recording and so in my new recording (which should be out in early 2015) I was bolder in my experiments with Cuban folkloric rhythms So on the new disc we play a Jazz ldquoRumba Guaguancordquo and an Afro-Cuban 128 piece entitled ldquoEl Maestrordquo This was written as a tribute to my friend the great percussionist from Havana Re-imundo Sosa (who appears on this track playing the Bataacute drums)

There is also more of the classic Latin-Jazz-type tunes like one I wrote entitled ldquoThe Man With The Golden Thumbrdquo inspired by the great jazz guitarist Wes Mont-gomery who played with his thumb The inspiration for my composition with the cheeky title ldquoItrsquos A Cana-dian Cha-Chahellip Ehrdquo comes from my wish to write a piece in the classic latin dance form of the title

The other main difference between the CDs is that all the band members are different on this CD with the exception of our conguero Jalidan Ruiz who plays on both albums

iquestYou started playing music when you were a teenager when did you find out that you wanted to be a musician

As a young lad I found a mentor in my first guitar teach-er a man named Ben Heywood who now lives in Lon-don Ontario He opened up a whole world of music to me There was no great collection of jazz records in my house when I was growing up in Victoria BC I began to study with Ben when I was 14 he turned me on to some of the best modern jazz recordings and artists He is also one of those people who was born to teach

and who teaches in a very creative non-pedantic way So my adolescent-self really responded to his progres-sive teaching style and the fact that he was willing to take the time to share a lot of hip musical knowledge with me I learned a lot from him and he became my jazz Guru for a year until he left Victoria

You teach music tell us about it

I have studied music in different styles with a lot of people As a result I have developed my own opin-ions about the best ways to teach music based on my most valuable learning experiences So I draw on this knowledge when Irsquom teaching I try to help my students discover new musical things and hopefully because Irsquom passionate about learning about music I pass this enthusiasm for learning on to them

iquestWhat do you express with your music

Irsquom writing instrumental music for my groups so the music is expressive in a more abstract way than vo-cal music I like to think that a successful composition is very much like a painting and even the jargon that musicians use is similar such as ldquocontourrdquo ldquolinerdquo and ldquocolourrdquo I look for a nice overall shape to the form of the composition and within that I think about the contour of the melodic lines and strive for smooth


movements between harmonies Also rhythm is cru-cial so I pay a lot of attention to that

Irsquom looking for a well-constructed composition with a logical development to it climax points in the correct places etc If I get this right then I believe the audi-ence will enjoy the music and it will express to them whatever they personally hear in it

iquestDo you remember the first time you got on stage and played for an audience

My first professional gig was as a 15 or 16 year-old kid in High School It was with a modern jazz group that

included my brother and a couple of other high school ldquojazz-nutrdquo friends We got asked to substitute for our saxophonistsrsquo teacherrsquos band and play one night at a great cafeacute in Victoria BC called Pagliaccirsquos which is still there and is a live music institution in Victoria So that was a thrill for us as kids

I was doing a jazz trio gig with two well-known To-ronto musicians (who shall remain nameless) and the bassist had eaten some sort of 3-bean chili be-fore the show We were playing a small space and as a consequence the band was packed together pretty

tightly Anyway the bassist began to have gas and let go some pretty serious flatulence over the course of the set Near the end of our performance I turned around and asked the guys in the band if they had any particular tune that they felt like playing to which the drummer immediately replied with a straight-face ldquoDo you know (the old standard tune) ldquoSoft Windsrdquo Irsquove always thought that was pretty amusing

You and your wife are Canadians that like danc-ing Salsa what can you tell us about the Salsa scene in Canada

Frankly I cannot tell you much about the Canadian Salsa scene Ha-ha My wife Barbara and I donrsquot get out to dance very much these days I play an early Friday night set at the Lula Lounge in Toronto some-times and after my Latin-Jazz Sextet plays they always have a great 13-or-so piece Salsa band that plays This is where we have an opportunity to dance So I can tell you that we really enjoy dancing Salsa at the Lula Lounge in Toronto but that is about the extent of our knowledge of the Canadian Salsa scene

iquest Is Latin music the rhythm that best suits Roland Hunter Why

Any music I do I do because I love and respect it and I make sure that Irsquom as knowledgeable about the his-tory and tradition of that music as I can be This is why Irsquove spent a lot of time developing some Spanish-lan-guage skills and also making trips to Cuba and New York (as well as local Toronto venues) to hear and study Latin music

I like any music that either stimulates the mind or makes the feet want to move Or both

So Jazz and Latin music are my chosen musics to ex-press myself through

iquestIf you could master another musical instrument besides the guitar and which one would you choose and why

I love learning the rhythms of the Cuban bataacute drums

These are the hour-glass shaped drums that you see played in groups of three players When you really get grooving with these three-drum percussion pieces it is a great feeling Very communicative music-making

Luis Alberto queacute recuerdos atesora en su memo-ria sobre su infancia y adolescencia en Cuba de sus progenitores de sus amigos y compantildeeros de sus maestros de los aromas del pasado que siem-pre regresa con el sentir nostaacutelgico de la vida

De mis antildeos de infancia recuerdos tengo para hacer dos libros Lo que siacute puedo resaltar es que naciacute en el seno de una familia muy humilde como la gran ma-yoriacutea de los paisanos de mi Cuba natal Me crieacute con lo justo para vivir pocas ropas pocos zapatos nada de lujos ni juguetes no teniacuteamos ni televisioacuten ni nevera ni teleacutefono las novelas y toda la muacutesica del mundo la teniacuteamos en la radio Con total garantiacutea eacuteramos mucho maacutes felices que muchos que hoy diacutea tienen de todo Yo estaba rodeado de amigos eacuteramos nintildeos que siempre sontildeaacutebamos con alcanzar algo grande en nuestras vidas eacuteramos en nuestra pandilla alrededor de 15 nintildeos todos haciacuteamos lo mismo con tal de im-presionar a todos jugaacutebamos todos los diacuteas de la se-mana al beacuteisbol o mas bien (Las 4 Esquinas o al Taco) el beacuteisbol lo dejaacutebamos para los saacutebados y domingos En otra epoca nos dioacute a todos por el Judo algunos su-bimos a un gran nivel en otros antildeos empezamos con el Boxeo (ahiacute yo tireacute los guantes eso no era para miacute jajaja) Mi padre se dedicaba a la hosteleriacutea donde fue un reconocido y respetado barman (Cantinero) crea-dor de coacutecteles y bebidas tropicales de muchas varie-dadesTrabajograve durante antildeos en los mejores hoteles de nuestra ciudad( Habana Libre Capri Riviera Vedado Nacional Deauville Sevilla o el Cabaret Tropicana ) Mi madre era ama de casa aunque tambieacuten experta en el tema de la costura Teniacutea una gran clientela para hacerles arreglos y confecciones de todo tipo Entre los dos recibiacute una educacioacuten muy dura que hizo de miacute el hombre que actualmente soy porque gracias a ellos mis conceptos y patrones de la vida siempre van al lado de la verdad dignidad nobleza seriedad en el trabajo constancia y el respeto por todas las personas sea cual sea su condicioacuten

Justo al lado de mi casa viviacutea un sentildeor apaacutetico poco hablador y muy serio siempre estaba enfadado por problemas familiares y personales En verdad no caigravea bien a casi nadie dada su postura ante los demaacutes pero resulta que su taloacuten de Aquiles era la bebida cuan-

do bebigravea todo cambiaba y era simpagravetico hablador y hasta tocaba una guitarra con cuatro cuatro cuerdas que teniacutea en casa Yo quedeacute impresionado al ver como sacaba sonido a un instrumento tan mal cuidado y destrozado Un diacutea me acerqueacute a eacutel y con miedo pero decidido le pediacute que me ensentildeara a hacer lo mismo Me dijo que eso era imposible pues el maestro nunca ensentildeariacutea todo lo que sabe y menos a alguien como



yo que era torpe para enfrentarme a aqueacutel instrumen-to Acto seguido comenzoacute a reiacuter y me puso su guita-rra (si se le podia llamar asi jajajaja a aquello) en las manos y me dijo que tocara cualquier cosa lo que se me ocurrierra Pobre de miacutehelliplo primero que hice fue romperle otra cuerda del tiroacuten que le proporcioneacute ja-jajajaja Enseguida me la quitoacute de las manos y estuvo dos semanas o maacutes sin hablarme jajajajaQueacute tipo

aqueacutel mas curioso (jamaacutes se me olvidaraacute)Fue el que me dioacute el empujoacuten para que desviara mi camino de deportes hacia la musica (yo estaba super encamina-do con esto del Judo y formaba parte de una de las mejores academias de mi ciudad) A mi vecino Juan ya tristemente fallecido siempre lo recuerdo con un carintildeo muy especial pues en verdad me ensentildeoacute lo que sabiacutea y su caracter cambioacute cuando vioacute mi progreso en

tan poco tiempo le hacia falta carintildeo y que se le valo-rara como ser humano cosa que hice yo y mi familia

Nos gustariacutea pasear sin amargura por las calles de sus recuerdos Queacute significa y representa la muacute-sica cubana las tradiciones musicales y bailables respecto de lo que mucho maacutes tarde se fraguoacute en la ciudad de Nueva York durante la deacutecada de los antildeos sesenta y setenta y que hoy conocemos comercialmente como muacutesica salsa Queacute papel tienen y desempentildean el son cubano el danzoacuten el guaguancoacute la guajira el mambo el chachachaacute el songo o el piloacuten entre otros muchos ritmos mu-sicales que surgieron en la hermosa isla de Cuba junto a otros como la bomba y la plena de Puerto Rico Usted tiene una dilatada carrera profesional desde aquellos primeros y sorprendentes tiem-pos como integrante del grupo Cubason pasando por la Orquesta Tipica de Hudson la Sonora Cari-bentildea Tropicana o la apasionante etapa en la Cha-ranga Habanera alcanzado finalmente el Grupo Caimaacuten Queacute le aportoacute y queacute significoacute su paso por cada una de estas fabulosas bandas y orquestas Cueacutentenos alguna aneacutecdota divertida o curiosa que tuviera en esa parte de la vida que disfrutoacute junto con la Charanga Habanera ceacutenit de su tra-yectoria como gran artista Es en el Grupo Caimaacuten donde ha depositado todos sus conocimientos musicales y vivencias personales que logroacute asi-milar a lo largo de su gran carrera como muacutesico profesional Resalte alguna cualidad de sus com-pantildeeros y amigos en esta agrupacioacuten musical y alguna aneacutecdota divertida que recuerde digna de ser contada o confesada ahora o nunca

Al poco tiempo de aquello como te voy contando y siguiendo el hilo de esta historia salieron en las tien-das de la Habana una especie de guitarras amarillas maliacutesimas y feas (de procedencia rusa) Les lloraba dia y noche a mis padres para que me la compraran y al cabo de unos meses mi padre se aparecioacute con la gui-tarra en sus manos Mi alegriacutea fue colosal me paseaba con la guitarra por todo el barrio Fue dificil y doloro-so el aprendizaje pues auacuten no estaba en la escuela de

muacutesica Aprendiacutea escuchando y viendo a otros tocar le preguntaba a todos coacutemo se llamaban los acordes y como se ponian absorbiacutea todo como una esponja Antildeos maacutes tarde comenceacute mi andadura musical con un grupo de aficionados participando en festivales y programas de radio y televisionDada mi inquietud musical ya en esta etapa tocaba el contrabajo la gui-tarra e instrumentos percutivos (bongoacutees y conga)

Mi padre me sorprendioacute una vez maacutes y se aparecioacute con una guitarra acuacutestica profesional hecha por un maes-tro luthier Resultaba que habiacutea estado guardando di-nero durante mucho tiempo para hacerme ese regalo Se me partioacute el alma aqueacutel gesto y llore con mucha emocioacuten Finalmente mi padre se habia dado cuenta que ese era mi camino y queria aportar algo para que lograse mi suentildeo Mis padres fueron los motores tan necesarios como imprescindibles para que yo alzara el vuelo cada cancioacuten cada nota musical nueva pasa-ba primero por los oiacutedos de mis padres Ahora pienso cuantiacutesimo tormento debiacute darles pero al final vieron que merecioacute la pena aguantar a su hijo con eso de la musiquitahellip

Yo llevaba todo adelante estudios normales y la muacute-sica Nunca repetiacute o suspendiacute ninguacuten exaacutemen estu-diaba por las noches y en las mantildeanas antes de ir a la escuela mis padres no tuvieron la oportunidad que yo tuve y que menos que demostrarles mi amor y ca-rintildeo siendo buen estudiante Mi primer salario lo gas-teacute en comidas para la casa y un vestido para mi madre Aportaba lo que podiacutea cada mes aunque ellos jamaacutes me pidieron nada

Tambieacuten retransmitiacutean programas de jazz de muacutesica tradicional y campesina de baladas Realizaban inclu-so un programa de muacutesica instrumental todos los dias del antildeo durante las 24 horas (RadioEnciclopedia) pro-gramas diarios de tangos boleros chachachaacutes etcLa radio cubana fue pionera en toda Latinoameacuterica y de esa misma radio nos nutrimos la mayoriacutea de muacutesi-cos que estamos hoy dia por el mundo alliacute fue donde bebimos y aprendimos el verdadero valor de nuestras raiacuteces Todos esos grandes irrebatibles y grandes creadores y maestros fueron la esencia la vitamina la primera llave para que antildeos despueacutes se abriera al mercado la llamada Salsa de la cual estamos muy satisfechos en su inmensa mayoriacutea (aunque hayan sus exepciones) pues hay que reconocer que aman todo lo nuestro y lo hacen con muchisima calidad dignidad y respeto

Queacute le ha aportado a usted la muacutesicaQuieacuten o queacute le impulsoacute a escoger esta muacutesica esta cultura salsera este impresionante y formidable sentirY si mantildeana mismo se acabara el soneo y la muacutesica afroantillana desapareciera de nuestras vidas se iriacutea con usted por fin libre la vida o por el contra-rio mantendriacutea la ilusioacuten en otros aspectos de la vida

En lo personal me alimento de todo lo que lleve muacute-sica Soy adorador de todos nuestros ancestros pero me gustan todos los sonidos del planeta sean de donde sean y de todos los tiempos admiro y respe-to a todo aquel que es capaz de a traveacutes de un ins-trumento hacer flotar sus emociones y sentimientos expresaacutendolos en forma de muacutesica Toda persona que con su voz dibuje melodiacuteas notas y hasta silen-

Ya en Cuba muchisimos antildeos atraacutes sonaban orques-tas con la sonoridad y arreglos que hoy dia utilizan los grandes salseros Por lo general en cada esquina y en cada barrio existian bares donde habiacutean las llamadas vitrolas maacutequinas donde por 50 centavos podiacuteas se-leccionar de un extenso cataacutelogo tu cancioacuten preferi-da Todas las bandas y orquestas sonaban de lujo ha-blamos de formatos tipo jazzband pero sonando con nuestros geacuteneros nacidos y cultivados ahiacute en la Isla Habiacutea respeto total hacia nuestra muacutesica y a los dife-rentes tipos de bailes Existiacutean salas nocturnas y diur-nas donde contrataban orquestas todos los meses del antildeo Todos iban conjuntados porque se palpaba que existiacutea el lenguaje del abanico seguramente cogido de tiempos de la coloniaLos hombres vestiacutean de eti-queta y las tiendas de sombreros no daban abasto dada la popularidad que teniacutean en la poblacioacuten

Yo no viviacute aquello directamente pero sigrave mis familiares La muacutesica nunca faltoacute en mi entorno Mi padre era y es nefasto con esto de cantar sin embargo mi madre es un sol y un La de afinada jajajaja Ella canta bajito pero pone la voz en su lugar me recuerdo cuando me cantaba estando yo en sus piernas aquello me sona-ba a vida y pazhellipsoy el uacutenico muacutesico de mi familia

Le pregunto estimado amigo existe actualmente un torrente de actividad creativa de compositores arreglistas muacutesicos y soneros de calidad en la ac-tualidad como sucedioacute en tiempos pasados den-tro de la historia cultural de esta hermosa muacutesica y su baile interpretativo Cuaacuteles son sus bandas soneros muacutesicos compositores inteacuterpretes o arreglistas favoritos en el pasado con proyeccioacuten es la actualidad

Hoy diacutea siguen naciendo compositores fantaacutesticos al igual que agrupaciones y bandas pero ya no existe aquella chispa aquella pasioacuten aquellos patrones que dieron tanto lujo y belleza a nuestra muacutesica aquella magia y color hoy diacutea existen otros intereses y puntos de vistas no se si le debo llamar involucioacuten o evolu-

cios todas realizadas desde el alma y con sentido esa persona me gusta me cautiva La muacutesica me aporta un noventa por ciento de mi felicidad ella es la que calma y me da fuerzas ante todos los momentos de la vida es mi refugio ante situaciones delicadas y me impulsa y acelera a ser mejor persona con ella respi-ro y con ella seguro que morireacute siempre estaraacute a mi lado por malos que sean los tiemposEs imposible que piense un mundo sin muacutesica esa seriacutea la antesala del apocalipsis de la desaparicioacuten de los seres vivos en todo el Universo

Con el transcurso del tiempo y con la ida y veni-da de frustraciones desengantildeos y desilusiones que acaecen en el devenir diario le pregunto si recuerda cuaacutendo era maacutes joven y sentiacutea el latir de aquellos principios y postulados de ilusioacuten espe-ranza y optimismo Se han trastocado aqueacutellos con la mella del destino alcanzado le pregunto Le quedan muchas cosas por hacer le pregunto

Me quedan miles de cosas por hacer como escribir un libro (tengo algo ya empezado) continuar aprendien-do a tocar instrumentos y corregir detalles e imper-fecciones vocales Llevo adelante actualmente cuatro proyectos musicales diferentes a la vez y sigo compo-niendo mientras me lo permite el tiempo y cuando las musas se dejan querer

Por eso le doy todo el corazoacuten a los que hacen posible que no muera nuestra verdadera identidad a los que cultivan y cuidan la Salsa y nuestros geacuteneros a esos que aun llevan sus trajes arreglos Bandas y mantie-nen viva nuestra herencia hoy en el antildeo 2014 a artis-tas de la talla de Gilberto Oscar Joseacute Alberto etc

Usted cuando compone piensa en el bailador como destinatario final de una muacutesica que se hizo principalmente para ser proyectada y disfruta-da en una pista de baile social y en un escenario llegado el caso O por el contrario piensa que el muacutesico debe estar desconectado de la idiosincra-sia del aficionado al baile Y si mantildeana mismo se acabara el soneo y la muacutesica afroantillana desa-pareciera de nuestras vidas se iriacutea con usted por fin libre la vida o por el contrario mantendriacutea la ilusioacuten en otros aspectos de la vida

Cuando compongo una cancioacuten me dejo llevar por mis emociones No busco eacutexito ni fortunas pienso la melodiacutea antes de escribir alguna letra no necesaria-mente lo hago inspirado en alguna circunstancia per-sonal vuelo al mundo de todos escojo como ejem-plo la vida de cualquier persona la situacioacuten eacutexito o fracaso que puede sucederle a cualquier ser humano me invento dramas y pasajes alegres la vida misma eventos que ahora en este instante usted puede estar experimentando Puedo componer esa melodiacutea con una guitarra o un piano Una vez terminado el tema empiezo a darle color invitando a trabajar conmigo a muacutesicos experimentados y entre ambos cocinamos un arreglo u orquestacioacuten que pueda vestir con su propia medida a la cancioacuten o sea si el contenido es sentimental romaacutentico iacutentimo etchellip Lo loacutegico es que la muacutesica del arreglo e instrumentos lleven la misma carga emocional

Resalte una cualidad de la muacutesica que se hace en la actualidad Hay un buen futuro para la salsa

La muacutesica tropical y la muacutesica latina en general mien-tras exista el pueblo latino no desapareceraacute pues practicamente nos alimentamos vivimos y morimos con nuestra cultura encima Se transformaraacuten algunos conceptos y algunos geacuteneros seran invadidos por la fusioacuten El mundo cambia y los seres humanos a la vez pero la esencia gallardiacutea y belleza sinigual de nues-tros geacuteneros nacieron y llegaron para quedarse por los siglos de los siglos En cualquier rincoacuten del planeta habraacute siempre un espacio donde se vea y esteacute presen-te Celia Cheo Ismael Frankie y esa larga lista de crea-dores y pilares de nuestra cultura latina y muy salsera

Estoy atrapado en esta tierra me embriaga y cautiva
