1947 In 1947 India was split

into two countries – India and Pakistan – by the British

This was so that India could be made up of Hindus and Pakistan of Muslims

However this caused rioting and it is estimated that about half a million people were killed in the dispute

Still some territories are fought over, namely Kashmir. It has been the source of war.

Who should Kashmir have gone to?

PAKISTAN INDIA

Pakistan’s main argument was that Kashmir population was mainly made up of Muslims and so should have been part of Pakistan

According to India the Maharaja of Kashmir pledged allegiance to India and not Pakistan

Because of fighting millions fled to India from East Pakistan

Influence of the Cold War

In the 1980s there was the cold war between the USA and the Soviet Union

They went through India, Pakistan and Afghanistan at one stage

The Soviets sided with India

The US sided with Afghanistan and Pakistan

Because of this International relations never improved

Nuclear Possibilities

The world began to get worried in 1998. Both India and Pakistan were developing

nuclear weapons. Tensions between India and Pakistan had

increased. America and Japan froze loans for aid to

both India and Pakistan. They stopped the bomb testing in early

1999

What I think

International Relations between India and Pakistan can improve heavily.

The partition occurred because of religion But now there are many Muslims, Hindus

and Catholics in both countries

However the International Relations are not improving as much as they can. But why?

Page 9: International Relations Between India And Pakistan

Why have they not worked?

It has been discovered that the terrorists in 26/11 were all trained in a Pakistani camp

They thought that they could kill English and Americans by hitting the tourist attractions in Mumbai

However this has dampened the relations between the two neighbouring countries.
