Welcome

Welcome to this International Postgraduate Guide.

Making the decision to study overseas, and

choosing the right university, is a big decision.

Since its beginnings in the 1970s, Griffith has

had a strong focus on internationalisation and

is privileged to host students from over 130

different countries. Both Brisbane and the Gold

Coast, home to five diverse Griffith University

campuses, offer students a great introduction to

the renowned Australian lifestyle. It is an exciting

time to join us at Griffith, with a new academic

calendar and revised programs being launched

in 2017. In addition, there is a renewed focus on

graduate employability, and a range of initiatives

have been developed to ensure you have the

support you need to achieve your goals.

I hope this Guide answers some of your questions,

and please do not hesitate to contact us

([email protected]) directly for any

further information that you may need. Having

been an international student myself, I am well

aware of the significance of the decision you are

making, and the life-changing impact studying

and living in another country can have. I wish you

well with your application and look forward to you

joining our Griffith University community.

Our students are responsible and engaged in their communities

Our students are innovative and creative, with critical judgement.

So many of us have experienced firsthand the way Griffith’s culture has evolved to welcome us in not as a number but as a human. We’ve seen the staff persist with us far beyond the boundaries of what’s required, giving us the gift of their time and energy over and over again. They’ve walked difficult journeys with us, cared for the individual, invested in our success and stood by us in moments of failure.

Danielle Redford,

“I enjoyed my time at Griffith and its focus on social justice issues... I was able to participate in the Innocence Project which was really rewarding.”

It’s a pleasure to travel in a wonderful country and have the opportunity to work in a very international environment with world-class research facilities and world-renowned researchers.

Romain Lepage, France

The vibe at Griffith is iconically Griffith, everyone is so welcoming, friendly and laid back. It’s an amazing place to study.

Sonia Barnsley, England

One thing that has inspired me the most at Griffith is the Griffith Mates program. They helped me a lot when I arrived, which made me feel welcome, and they also create the feeling of helping others in me.

Jorge Eduardo Benites Salazar, Peru

At none of the universities I visited in the United States, and not even at my home university, have I encountered such a friendly and welcoming student body. Everyone is remarkably kind and outgoing, and it is incredibly easy to meet new people.

Spencer Schiappa, United States of America

My experience at Griffith University has inspired me to pursue my love of events, fundraising and stewardship as the lecturers here offer their industry knowledge, advice and support. Not only that, but the University helps you gain work experience through volunteering and work placements!

Janine Carla Cezar, Canada

Griffith is more than just a university. It is a place where people from many parts of the world gather together and interact, not only academically, but also socially.

Sergio Guevara Romero, Mexico

Our students’ storiesThe 9,000 international students at Griffith come from two-thirds of the world’s countries. They bring invaluable international perspectives, and experiences, to Griffith’s classrooms and community. In return we work constantly to make sure each student feels welcome, supported, and appreciated. But don’t just take our word for it - these are some of their stories.

Through working in a diverse society and actively getting involved with mentoring programs, I’ve learnt more about myself, and developed and sharpened my leadership and communication skills. Griffith has made me realise how important it is to give back to the community while working towards my degree.

Jessie Fuesaina, Samoa

Griffith has eco-friendly campuses. I study forest ecology and am really concerned about environmental conservation. I believe that a good atmosphere can motivate good learning.

Kwankhao Sinhaseni, Thailand

I liked helping Griffith in every way possible. I was a Griffith Mate and Senior Buddy. Also, in my School (Business) I was the Vice President for the Griffith Business Students’ Association.

Arsalan Khadim, Pakistan

Griffith has a global reputation which ensures that your talent, potential and skills are recognised worldwide. The learning resources, support and advice available has made me realise that l can achieve my goals irrespective of the circumstances I encounter.

Tavonga Chapfuwa, Zimbabwe

Although English is my second language, there is a variety of support for international students which helped me overcome language barriers. The Student Guild and Griffith Mates Buddy Program have been helping me a lot to adapt to Australian life.

Hiroko Fukuma, Japan

The various opportunities to gain practical experiences relevant to my degree in a fun, social environment have fuelled my passion in education. With Griffith I have participated in volunteer teaching in Cambodia, a short term exchange in the Netherlands, and yearly practicum placements in Brisbane.

Yasmin Scott, Australia

I’ve attended numerous volunteering events on- and off-campus, from charities to global meetings. Working for the G20 cultural celebrations is a cherished memory in my life.

Xincheng Kai, China

My (MBA) course director stressed the importance of entrepreneurship, which I don’t think I would have gotten in any other university. Representing Griffith and placing in various international venture investment competitions, including the G20 Global Business Challenge, has definitely been a highlight.

Off-campusIn Australia, share housing–where you share a house or apartment with a number of other students–is the most common form of off-campus accommodation. To ensure you can inspect the property before you move in, it is better to organise off-campus accommodation once you arrive. However, we suggest you organise temporary accommodation for your first few weeks in Queensland, Australia from your home country. Find off-campus accommodation properties here: griffith.edu.au/off-campus-accommodation

How to apply for a higher degree by research:Step 1. Choose your higher degree by research. If you don’t meet the direct entry requirements for a research degree, you may be offered a Graduate Diploma of Research Studies as an academic pathway to a PhD or MPhil.

Visit griffith.edu.au/elements and view our Academic Groups and Schools/Departments. Search for a potential supervisor in the staff profile pages, or visit experts.griffith.edu.au. Once you’ve found a researcher with whom you would like to work, you will need to contact them directly to discuss your research proposal.

Step 4. Consider program fees. All international candidates are required to pay tuition fees. Visit degrees.griffith.edu.au to calculate your tuition fees.

TrimestersFrom 2017, we’ll be teaching across three trimesters, rather than two semesters–which gives you the flexibility to pace your study to suit your needs. You will have more opportunities throughout the year to start study–for example, you can start our business, commerce, science, IT, psychological science and counselling degrees in February, July, or October. From 2017, Griffith University degrees will be delivered over three twelve-week teaching periods per year.

Trimesters one and two are compulsory, so if you begin your degree in trimester three, you must complete trimesters one and two in the following year; however, if you begin in trimester one or two, it is not compulsory to enrol in trimester three.

• Trimester 1 (T1): 27 February – 26 May 2017• Trimester 2 (T2): 3 July – 22 September 2017• Trimester 3 (T3) (optional): 30 October 2017 – 2 February
