WHERE httpwwwsipogovcnsipo_Englishdefaulthtm

WHEN July 2002

WHY The China Patent Database is made available as a public ser-vice by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) of the Peoplersquos Re-public of China to publicize ldquothe intellectual property policy of the staterdquoand to provide ldquocomplete and comprehensive patent information service for the purpose of creating better social and economic benefits to thecountryrdquo

HOW The China Patent Database may be searched in one of three ways

bull basic search (single field search)bull lsquoQuick Searchrsquo (two field search)bull lsquoExpression Searchrsquo (simple or complex Boolean searching)

Basic Search

A basic search is provided directly from the English-languagehomepage of the State Intellectual Property Office of the Peoplersquos Re-public of China (SIPO) By using a pull-down menu it allows the user tosearch the China Patent Database by one of several fields notably lsquoTi-tlersquo lsquoAbstractrsquo lsquoApplication Numberrsquo lsquoInventor(s) Namersquo lsquoIPCrsquo (Inter-national Patent Classification) or lsquoApplicant(s) Namersquo

Quick Search

In addition to providing the field search options available in a basicsearch a lsquoQuick Searchrsquo option allows users to also search by lsquoApplica-

tion Datersquo Publication Datersquo lsquoAddressrsquo and lsquoAttorney amp Agentrsquo lsquoAllFieldsrsquo can also be searched separately or in combination with a singlefield or another lsquoAll Fieldsrsquo option in either an lsquoANDrsquo or lsquoORrsquo Booleanrelationship In addition a single field may be searched individually orin combination with one other field with identical logical options

Expression Search

Users may construct a simple or complex search using a select set offield codes and associated terms phrases numbers or alphanumericcharacters separately or in a simple or nested Boolean statement (eglsquopd = 1998 and abst = gloversquo) The following codes are presently avail-able and searchable

bull PN (Publication Number)bull PD (Publication Date)bull TTL (Title)bull ADDR (Address)bull APD (Application Date)bull IN (Inventor Name)bull ABST (Abstract)bull ICL (International Classification)bull APM [sic] (Applicant(s) Name)

Search results are displayed as a number list (lsquoIDrsquo) For each entrythe application number (lsquoApp Norsquo) and title are provided The title ishotlinked to a full record that provides specific data for each of thesesearchable fields (eg lsquoTitle Non-dusting secondary immersion methodof PVC gum glovesrsquo lsquoApplication Number 97106357rsquo lsquoApplicationDate 19970404rsquo lsquoPublication Number 1195607rsquo lsquoInternationalClassification B29C 4114rsquo) and lsquoAbstractrsquo In addition a field is pro-vided for an lsquoApproval Pub Datersquo and a lsquoGranted Pub Datersquo

Access to the full-text of patents is not directly available from the Eng-lish-language service Using data obtained from this English languagesearch users can retrieve select full-text documents as TIF images fromthe Chinese language patent search database [httpwwwjiansuocom]by following instructions on searching the Chinese language interfaceprovided by John Mayall [httpwwwmayalljfreeservecoukchinahtm]

Madrid Express Database

The Madrid Express Database provides access to all international trade-mark registrations that are currently in force or have expired within the pastsix months It also includes data relating to international applications andsubsequent designations that have been received by the WIPO Interna-tional Bureau but not yet recorded in its international register of marks

PCT Electronic Gazette

The PCT Electronic Gazette database provides lsquofirst page datarsquo (bib-liographic data abstract and drawing) of Patent Cooperation Treaty(PCT) applications published since January 1997 The PCT simplifiesand reduces the cost of obtaining international patent protection By fil-ing one international patent application under terms of the PCT an in-ventor can ldquosimultaneously seek protection for an invention in over onehundred countries throughout the worldrdquo

The database may be searched using an advanced search interface alsquoSimple Searchrsquo interface [httpipdlwipointensearchpctsearch-simphtml] or a lsquoStructured Searchrsquo interface [httpipdlwipointensearchpctsearch-structhtml] The advanced search the default allows users to per-form a free-text or field search (eg lsquoETrsquo (English title) lsquoABErsquo (EnglishAbstract) lsquoPArsquo (applicant name)) [httpipdlwipointensearchpctsearch2html] The entire database may be searched or limited to the current week(eg lsquo12092002rsquo) Results may be sorted chronologically or by relevancefull records may be displayed in a lsquoBasicrsquo lsquoGazettersquo or lsquoFront Pagersquo formatIn addition users can specify the types of data to be displayed in the resultslisting (eg publication date (lsquoPub Datersquo) assigned international classifi-cation (lsquoInt Classrsquo) application number (lsquoApp Numrsquo) lsquoFirst InventorrsquolsquoFirst Applicantrsquo lsquoAbstractrsquo andor lsquoImagersquo (NoneSmallLarge) publica-tion number (lsquoPub Norsquo) and lsquoTitlersquo are standard Results may be displayedas lists of 10 25 or 50 entries
