Term 3 saw the arrival of our largest intake of international students to date. Over 20 new students from Vietnam, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong participated in our Ori-entation programme for new international students. All students are now out in classes and settling into life at Freyberg High School. Many have had the opportunity to participate in a number of school trips and activities already, some of which you will see throughout this newsletter.

Orientation

Visit to Wellington A large group of international students travelled to Wellington at the end of August to enjoy a day in New Zealand’s capital city. The students, accompanied by staff members Sina Steele and Florence Kelly, spent some time visiting Wellington’s Victoria University before catching the cable car to town and walking to New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa. The students had a great time wandering around the city centre, and for many of them it was their first time travelling to Wellington.

Welcome Pizza Lunch During Orientation, the International Student Department hosted a pizza lunch to welcome the new international students and provide an opportunity for them to meet the kiwi student leaders, as well as other interested kiwi students who had volunteered to be a buddy for new students. Here are some photos from the lunch:

International Leader It is with great pleasure that we introduce our international student leader, Kate Pham Ngoc. Kate is originally from Vietnam and is currently studying in Year 13 at Freyberg. She is a very motivated and outgoing student and is well respected by students and teachers alike. Kate has helped organise numerous activities such as the International Dinner and the Buddy Programme. Earlier in the year she also attended the National Young Leaders Day programme in Wellington with other Freyberg student leaders.

Senior Ball Freyberg’s annual Senior Ball took place on the first weekend of August. The majority of Freyberg’s international students attended the Ball and it was lovely to see everybody dressed up in their finest suits and dresses.

The Senior Ball is organised each year by the senior student leaders. This year’s Ball had an ancient Greek theme and some of the school’s junior students came along dressed in togas to help serve drinks and food.

Below are some photos of our international students taken by professional photographer, Bernadette Peters, and Freyberg’s Senior Manager, Robert Elder.

Visit from Namiki High School The International Department recently hosted a large group students from Namiki High School in Japan. The students stayed here for two weeks, attending classes with a kiwi buddy as well as participating in a number of different activities. Head of International Students, Rose Simmons, taught daily ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) lessons and helped organise activities for the group, in conjunction with other departments in the school. Some of these activities included Māori culture lessons and learning how to play netball. The short stay was very successful and the school has already requested to come back again next year. The students had a great time in New Zealand and made many friends during their short time here. Below are some photos that one of our homestay mothers, Michelle Mackinnon, took during the Namiki farewell party.

Our international student leader, Kate Pham Ngoc, had the great idea of organising an event for international students following the Senior school exams. With the help of Mrs Florence Kelly, she organised an international student dinner evening. The majority of our international students attended the event which featured performances by a number of students, including musical recitals and dances. There were also a number of games and fun activities provided. Below are some photos from the evening, taken by Mrs Kelly.
