The International Museum
of Surgical Science (IMSS)
The Mission of the Museum is to enrich people’s lives by enhancing their
appreciation and understanding of the history, development and advances in
surgery and related subjects in health and medicine.
Museum History
• Mansion built in
1917 by Eleanor
Robinson Countiss
• After Eleanor’s death
in the 1930’s, the family
sold the property
which was bought by
the International
College of Surgeons.
• The Museum began
as the Surgeon’s Hall
of Fame in 1954.
Museum Collection
Over 20,000 artifacts!
•Collection covers over
5,000 years of history
•Library contains over
4,000 volumes from the
16th – 18th centuries
•600 paintings, prints &
sculptures
•650 letters and papers
from prominent figures in
medical history
The Museum receives
visitors from all over the
world!
•Around 30,000
visitors per year - and
growing!
