Abstract

Technology has often been cited as the major driving force behindinnovation in higher education and for educational reform in a variety ofcontexts. Modern digital technologies such as computers, telecommuni-cations, and networks are reshaping and eventually revolutionizing bothour society and our social and educational institutions. A new society,the knowledge society is thus arising, the elements of which coexistingwith the constitutive elements of the industrial and postindustrial so-ciety. The most obvious aspect of the new society is the speed of use,application and dissemination of the communication and informationtechnologies, which puts in the shade the fact that there occurs a majortransformation of concepts, structures and institutions specific to theprevious society. Within the technological context, electrical engineersplay a significant role. They develop new design, manufacturing pro-cesses and products. They advance and manage communication, trans-portation, health care devices and energy systems. They address theenvironmental issues and the make technology work. The electrical en-gineering activities generate a remarkable potential for the private andthe public sectors to develop the national wealth and strength. Thechairman of the American National Academy of Engineering noted that“the nation the best engineering talent is in possession of the core ingre-dient of comparative economic and industrial advantage”.

Biography of the speaker: Dr. Zabalawi was born in Amman,Jordan (1950). He received his B.Sc. honors with distinction in electri-cal engineering (communications)in 1974 from Cairo University (Egypt),and his M.Sc. with distinction in Microwave Communication Engineer-ing form Leeds University (England) in 1976, and his Ph.D. in Electricaland Electronics Engineering from Leeds University (England) in 1979.He was granted The Leeds University award for graduate studies forthree years 1976-1979.Dr. Zabalawi is specialized in analog and digital signal processing andcommunication techniques. His interests include: communication indus-try, information technology, and technology transfer and higher educa-tion development.Dr. Zabalawi served as the founding president for the newly establishedprivate university in Syria the International University or Science andTechnology (IUST) from May 2005 until May 2007.Dr. Zabalawi was the minster of Higher Education and Scientific Re-search in Jordan during the period Oct.2003 until April 2005.Dr. Zabalawi was the Chancellor of the University of Sharjah from1999-2003. In 1999 he became the Chairman of the Higher EducationAccreditation Council of Jordan. In 1996 he became the Vice-President(Scientific and Medical Faculties) of the University of Jordan. In 1994he headed the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Dept. of the Col-lege of Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman.Between 1989-1993, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineeringand Technology, University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan. Prior that hechaired the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at theUniversity, where he taught a number of courses in his field at the un-dergraduate and graduate levels and he supervised a number of graduatetheses.Dr. Zabalawi was an active member in the higher education develop-ment team. He has organized and chaired a number of regional and in-ternational conferences and workshops. He is a well-published researchscholar. He was a research fellow with the German Academy of Ex-change (DAAD) at the University of Karsruhe, the Technical Universityof Hamburg, and the University of Erlangen, Germany. In addition hewas a Research fellow, Electrical Engineering Dept., University of Vic-toria, Victoria, Canada and Research Fellow with Telenokia, Helsinki,Finland.Dr. Zabalawi served (1993-1999) as the IEE (Institution of ElectricalEngineering, UK.). Council Representative for Jordan and Gulf States.He is a Chartered Engineer and a senior member at the IEEE (Institute

Control and safety verification based on aparaconsistent logic program EVALPSN

Abstract

I have already proposed a paraconsistent annotated logic programcalled Extended Vector Annotated Logic Program with Strong Negation(EVALPSN),which can deal with defensible deontic reasoning. EVALPSNhas been applied to various intelligent control and safety verificationsystems such as pipeline valve control, railway interlocking safety ver-ification, etc. Moreover, EVALPSN has been developed to deal withbefore-after relation between two processes and it can be applied to pro-cess time control and process order safety verification. The developedEVALPSN is called bf (before-after) EVALPSN. It will be introducedhow to apply EVALPSN and bf-EVALPSN to intelligent control andsafety verification with some concrete examples and simulation systemsin the speech.

Biography of the speaker: Dr. Kazumi Nakamatsu has been aprofessor at School of Human Science and Environment, University ofHyogo since 2004. His research focuses on application of formal logics,especially paraconsistent annotated logic program, with applications tocomputer science area. He has developed a paraconsistent logic programcalled an EVALPSN (Extended Vector Annotated Logic Program withStrong Negation), and applied it to intelligent control and safety verifica-tion for various systems such as railway interlocking safety verification,pipeline valve control, traffic signal control, etc.. He has applied a PATin terms of intelligent process order control based on EVALPSN. In ad-

Potential of carbon nanotubes for sensorapplications

Abstract

Due to their unique electrical and mechanical properties carbon nan-otubes (CNTs) are the most studied material in the nanotechnology.These material properties involve interesting advantages for sensors, suchas a short reaction time, a higher sensitivity and novel sensing principles.In this paper we evaluate the potential of CNTs for different sensor ap-plications. Although nanotechnology is still under development, severalsensors can be already realized showing decisive advantages comparedwith nowadays sensors for several measured quantities.Three differentcategories of CNT based sensors are reported: analytical sensors whichare based on the interaction of CNTs with ions and molecules, mechan-ical sensors which are based on the piezoresistivity of CNTs and opticalsensors which profit from the high absorption rates of CNT and theirunique optical properties.

Biography of the speaker: Dr. Olfa Kanoun received her M. Sc.degree from the Technische Universitat in Munich in Germany. In 2001,she received her Ph.D. degree from the institute for measurement and au-tomation at the Universitat der Bundeswehr Munchen. She was awardedfrom the AHMT (Commission of Professors in Measurement Technology,Germany) for the best dissertation in 2001. In 2004 she founded theIEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Chapter in the IEEE section

Germany. In 2006 she was a short term professor for metrology at theUniversity of Kassel. Since 2007 she is professor for Measurement andSensor Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany.Her main research fields are: Impedance Spectroscopy, Energy Harvest-ing and Micro and Nano Sensors.She is the chairman of the International Conference on Sensors, Circuitsand Instrumentation Systems organized within the International Mul-ticonference on Systems, Signals and Devices (SSD) since 2001. She isthe editor in chief of the Transactions on Systems, Signals and Devices(issues on Sensors, Circuits and Instrumentation Systems), published byShaker-Verlag, Germany.

Abstract

Surface and bulk acoustic wave (SAW and BAW) devices are suit-able as passive wireless sensor elements, called SAW transponders orBAW sensors, for measuring physical quantities e.g. temperature, pres-sure or specific bio molecules even in liquids. But the sensitivity ofthe resonance frequency in liquids depends on the polarization of theacoustic wave and therefore shear wave polarizes surface or bulk acous-tic waves are respectively needed. In the recent years different kindsof approaches of SAW transponders for sensor applications were pub-lished mainly based on piezoelectric materials designed for filter applica-tions with longitudinal wave polarizations e.g. Rayleigh waves for SAWtransponders or longitudinal waves for BAW sensors. A new approach ispresented designing adapted piezoelectric materials with Metal-Organic-Vapor-Phase-Epitaxy (MOVPE) especially for sensor application andtherefore with shear wave polarization of the acoustic waves in this work.

Biography of the speaker: Marc Loschonsky was born in Gien-gen an der Brenz, Germany, in 1979. He received the Dipl.-Ing. (M.Sc.)degree in micro-systems technology from Albert- Ludwigs University ofFreiburg, Germany. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree withthe laboratory for electrical instrumentation (EMP) at the Institutefor Microsystem Technology (IMTEK), Albert-Ludwigs, University ofFreiburg, Germany where he works as research manager.His primary research interests concern wireless sensors and advancedradar sensor system concepts, the development and design of surfaceand bulk acoustic wave devices for measurement purposes, their ma-terials, processing and application to frequency control and measuringsystems.Leonhard Reindl received the Dipl. Phys. degree from the TechnicalUniversity of Munich, Germany, in 1985 and the Dr.Sc.Techn. degreefrom the University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, in 1997. From 1985to 1999 he was a member of the micro acoustics group of the SiemensCorporate Technology department, Munich, Germany, where he was in-volved in research and development on SAW convolvers, dispersive andtapped delay lines, ID-tags and wireless passive SAW sensors. In winter1998/99 and summer 2000 he was guest professor for spread spectrumtechnologies and sensor techniques at the University of Linz, Austria.From 1999 to 2003 he was university lecturer for communication andmicrowave techniques at the Institute of Electrical Information Tech-nology, Clausthal University of Technology. In May 2003 he accepteda full professor position at the laboratory for electrical instrumentationat the Institute for Microsystem Technology (IMTEK), Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, Germany. His research interests include wirelesssensor and identification systems, surface acoustic wave devices and ma-terials and microwave communication systems based on SAW devices.He holds 35 patents on SAW devices and wireless passive sensor sys-tems and has authored or co-authored approximately 140 papers in thisfield. Leonhard Reindl is Elected Administrative Committee (AdCom)member of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency ControlSociety and also a member of the Microwave Theory and TechniquesSociety. Since 2000 he has been a member of the Technical ProgramCommittee of the IEEE Frequency Control Symposium. He is also en-gaged in technical committees of the German VDE/ITG Association.

A reconfigurable system for digital signalprocessing

Abstract

Commonality of various algorithms is analyzed based on the researchof algorithms commonly used digital signal processing and a reconfig-urable cell is proposed. A reconfigurable system with the cells is de-signed, which is widely used in a variety of digital signal processing.The principle and method of using this system are discussed with thebasic algorithms of digital signal processing - multiplication and adder -as example. By means of simulation and implementation, it is found thatthis system has much higher processing speed and efficiency, comparedwith other kinds of GM multipliers.

Abstract

An adaptive nonlinear sliding mode controller combined with a fieldorientation scheme has been developed for the control of induction mo-tor to achieve rotor angular speed and rotor flux amplitude trackingobjectives. The inputs to the controller are the reference speed, the ref-erence flux, the measured stator currents, the measured rotor speed, theestimated rotor flux, and estimates of the varying non measurable pa-rameters. The unknown load torque and the rotor resistance which mayvary during operation. The controller outputs are the reference statorvoltages. An accurate knowledge of the rotor flux, the load torque andthe rotor resistance is the key factor in obtaining a high-performanceand high-efficiency induction motor drive. The rotor flux is estimatedusing the induction motor rotor-circuit model. Although the estimatedrotor flux is insensitive to the stator-resistance variation, it does de-pend on the rotor resistance. A stable model reference adaptive system(MRAS) rotor-resistance estimator insensitive to stator-resistance vari-ation as well as a load torque estimator have been designed. The use ofcascade sliding mode control structure and continuous adaptive updateof the machine parameters ensures accurate flux estimation and high-performance operation. Simulation results are presented to verify thestability of the induction-motor drive in various operating modes.

Abstract

A major bottleneck in today’s computer system performance is thespeed of the main memory bus. A memory bus should be carefullydesigned for good signal integrity (SI) and timing performance. Thispaper presents the design, modelling and simulation of a double data ratesynchronous dynamic RAM (DDR-II SDRAM) memory bus operatingat 400/533Mbps. Three bus topologies are investigated and compared interms of the amount of inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and the eye-width(EW). The topology with on-die-termination (ODT) gave about 95%improvement in ISI reduction, and about 37% and 12% improvementin the eye-width for the worst case write and read operations for the400Mbps data rate, respectively, when compared to the conventionalmother board termination (MBT) scheme.

Abstract

This paper presents a quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (QVCO)based on the electric coupling of two identical LC voltage controlled os-cillator in 0.35µm CMOS technology. The proposed design of QVCO ac-complishes extensive tuning by using binary weighted switched varactorin addition to a linearly varying varactor. The simulated results show themulti-band frequency of proposed QVCO using in multi-standard wire-less applications. This structure presents a 50% of tuning range carrierfrequency at a range of 2.3 to 3.8 GHz. The phase noise is −130dBc/Hzat 1MHz offset frequency from carrier frequency of 3.5GHz. The powerconsumption of QVCO is 13.6mW.

Abstract

In recent years, multiphase machines are gaining an increasing interestdue to the advantages they possess compared to the conventional threephase machines. One of these advantages is their additional degrees offreedom.In this paper, extensive simulation studies of series connectedmultimachines system supplied by a single inverter are presented. Thissystem consists of a six-phase induction machine and a three-phase in-duction machine. The stators windings of both machines are connectedin series in appropriate manner.The dynamic decoupling of each machinefrom the group is obtained using the indirect vector control algorithm.Mathematical modeling of the multimachine system showed the possi-bility of independent control of each machine in the group. The inde-pendent control is demonstrated by analyzing the characteristics of thetorque and speed of each machine obtained via simulation of multima-chine system under indirect vector control scheme. However, the inde-pendent control scheme is model-based thus very sensitive to changesin certain parameters of the series connected machines. To overcomethis problem, these parameters are estimated on line and used to updatethe control scheme. The simulation results obtained demonstrate theimproved robustness of the multimachines system under the proposedcontrol algorithm.

Abstract

A straightforward approach to suppress three-phase supply currentand load voltage distortions is presented. This latter uses the unifiedpower quality conditioner (UPQC) topology made up of a hybrid activepower filter (APF) combination based on a series APF, sharing a com-mon DC voltage with a parallel APF, and passive filters. Supply currentdistortion is introduced by connecting a non-linear load, while load volt-age distortion occurs after adding fifth and seventh harmonics to the ACmain voltage. The series APF controller forces load voltage to be sinu-soidal, whereas parallel APF and passive filters counter harmonic con-tents from supply current. A model established under Matlab-Simulinksoftware shows the performance of such approach.

Theworking group “Safety and Security for Home and Living” at UniBwMdevelops a fall sensing system with large detection probability and lowfalse alarm probability. The main tasks are the election of sensors, thesignal processing algorithms, an appropriate microdevice to process thesignal quickly, the selection of the wearing position of the fall sensorsystem and the possibility to stand environmental conditions (e.g. hightemperature and humidity).

Abstract

The control and monitoring of drinking water is becoming more andmore interesting because of its effects on human life. Many techniqueswere developed in this field in order to ameliorate this process controlattending to rigorous follow-ups of the quality of this vital resource.Several methods were implemented to achieve this goal. In this paper, acomparative study of two techniques resulting from the field of the arti-ficial intelligence namely: RBF Neural Network (RBF-NN) and SupportVector Machine (SVM), is presented. Developed from the statisticallearning theory, these methods display optimal training performancesand generalization in many fields of application, among others the fieldof pattern recognition. Applied as classification tools, these techniquesshould ensure within a multi-sensor monitoring system, a direct andquasi permanent control of water quality. In order to evaluate their per-formances, a simulation using real data, corresponding to the recognitionrate, the training time, and the robustness, is carried out. To validatetheir functionalities, an application is presented.

Abstract

This paper describes a tactile sensor array for a typical biomedicalapplications. It is built on positioning a dedicated number of force sen-sors element which is based on Hall Effect devices. The whole sensingelement were mounted on a polymer cylinder bases. Characterization ofthe materials used has shown the feasibility of such tactile sensor ele-ment. The outputs signals issued from sensors are carried out to a lowcost instrumentation amplifiers. After analog processing and filtering,the signals are sampled and digitalized by commercial data acquisitioncard interfaced to a PC. First calibration was performed for small stressin the linear region of the elastic material with a range smaller than10N for instance. For stress greater than 10N and up to 50N a rou-tine is implemented regarding the nonlinear shape of the material fornonlinearity correction. Experimental results have been carried out forfingertips force grasping which highlight the easiness realization forcesensor prototype.

This paper analyzes the problematic of the interferences created bywind farms. Wind turbines may cause interferences to television and mi-crowave signals due to reflections and diffractions of those signals fromboth the tower (stationary) and the blades (non-stationary). The ITURadiocommunication Assembly, on the BT 805, specifies a simplifiedmodel of impairment caused to television reception by a single windturbine considering only free space propagation. This paper shows theextensions to a multiple turbine case, the inclusion of other propaga-tion models (plain earth and ITU-R P.1546) and presents more accuratemodels to obtain the scattering produced by a wind turbine, as well astheir implementation on friendly-use software.

Commonality of various algorithms is analyzed based on the researchof algorithms commonly used digital signal processing and a reconfig-urable cell is proposed. A reconfigurable system with the cells is de-signed, which is widely used in a variety of digital signal processing.The principle and method of using this system are discussed with thebasic algorithms of digital signal processing - multiplication and adder -as example. By means of simulation and implementation, it is found thatthis system has much higher processing speed and efficiency, comparedwith other kinds of GM multipliers.

Abstract

This paper proposes a parallel architecture for a fast three step search(FTSS) algorithm, which is used in motion estimation. FTSS algorithminvolves reduced number of search points and is thus less computationallyexpensive compared to the standard three step search (TSS) algorithm.Degradation of performance while applying the FTSS algorithm to sev-eral standard images has been shown to be insignificant compared to thestandard TSS algorithm. The proposed architecture uses only three pro-cessing elements accompanied with use of intelligent data arrangementand memory configuration. A technique for reducing external memoryaccesses has also been developed. The proposed architecture for FTSSprovides an efficient solution for applications requiring real-time motionestimations, because it requires smaller area and power than what wouldbe required to implement TSS. The proposed architecture provides thesolution for low bit-rate video applications like video telephony and tele-conferencing.

Abstract

Segmentation is a fundamental stage in image processing since it con-ditions the quality of interpretation. Fusion in remote sensing has onegoal which is to combine different images obtained by different sensors inone image or in different images in order to improve the content and theresolution of these images. In this research, a new fusion method is im-plemented to improve the segmentation process. This method combinesthe results of different image segmentation methods or combines the re-sults of the same image segmentation method. The new fusion methodconsists of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to combine each two segmentedimages based on the stability factor which is measured by the FunctionalModel (FM). Experiments conducted on SPOT V, and Landsat 7 ETM+images proved that this method can provide better results comparedto the results obtained from using two different segmentation methods.Two methods ate used in these experiments, Self-Organizing Map andHybrid Dynamic Genetic Algorithm cooperation method (SOM-HGA)and the Iterative Self-Organizing Data (ISODATA) method.

Abstract

An algorithm is presented to absolutely registration two 3-D sensorsusing targets that are tracked by both sensors. The algorithm estimatesand removes sensor biases and sensor frame orientation errors, For il-lustrative purposes, the algorithm uses the difference in the position ofa target, as reported by the two sensors, to compute a set of bias pa-rameters. These bias parameters are then applied to align both sensor’strack positional data. The registration algorithm is applicable to thosesituations where there are no sensor location errors, the magnitude ofthe bias errors is small, and these errors do not change with time or veryslowly with time.

Abstract

This work investigated the electrical and morphological properties ofNitrogen Doped Silicon (NIDOS) thin films. The resistivity measure-ments showed an increase in the resistivity values with the increase inthe nitrogen tenor for films annealed at temperatures lower or equalsto 1000◦C. However, for an annealing temperature of 1100◦C, resultsshow an improvement of films conductivity with the increase both, theannealing duration and the nitrogen tenor. The X-ray diffraction andthe SEM observations showed that the film crystallinity increases withthe duration annealing, and that the high nitrogen content inhibits thecrystallization phenomena. The crystallization mode of NIDOS films hasbeen determined using the Kolmogorov-Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (KJMA)model and grain size distribution study. Results show that the nucleationin NIDOS films occurs heterogeneously at the interface NIDOS/SiO2.The crystallites reach the film surface in a one-dimensional way dur-ing a short time and continue to grow laterally The improvement ofthe electrical characteristics of NIDOS films are strongly related to itsmorphological evolution of the amorphous to the polycrystalline phase.

In this paper, the network analog method is developed with a viewto applying it to compute quasi-static electrical parameters (matricesof capacitance [Cij ], inductance [Lij ], conductance [Gij ] and resistance[Rij ]) of multilayer structures in CMOS technology. Finite-differencemethod with variable increments is applied to solve Laplace’s equation.It involves building a network analog having complex or real branches.Hence, if any advantages can be obtained, one may solve a networkproblem using the network analog method instead of the correspond-ing Laplace’s difference equations. Thus, the number of equations, thecomputational time and the memory space will be considerably reduced.Sample results are presented for conductor line sizes and spacing typicalof multilevel VLSI structures.

The current paper presents a study on the numerical method of inver-sion of Laplace transforms (NILT) to deal with some of EMC problemsin MW systems under the Matlab environment. The idea consists instudying the two well used algorithms in NILT, one is called quotient-difference algorithm using expansion of the Fourier series and the otheris called ε-algorithm using the expansion of Laguerre function, in orderto reach an optimal algorithm of the NILT method for different mul-ticonductor transmission line (MTL) systems. The simulation resultsshow that the quotient difference algorithm is most efficient than the ε-algorithm in term of rapid convergence to zero with a low relative error;these performances increase significantly the use of Laplace transforminversion by the method of Laguerre in MW circuits.

Behavioral description of quantum V andV

+ gates to design quantum logic circuits

Abstract

Quantum gates which are represented by unitary matrices have po-tentials to implement reversible logic circuits. V and V + gates are twowell known quantum gates which are used to synthesize the reversiblelogic circuits. In this paper we have used behavioral description of thesegates, instead of unitary matrix description of quantum gates, to syn-thesize reversible logic circuits. By this method, V and V + gates areshown in the truth table form. Results show that bigger circuits withmore number of gates can be synthesized using proposed method. Somebenchmarks of reversible logic circuits are also optimized and comparedwith other works.

A new miniaturized fractal bandpassfilter based on dual-mode microstripsquare ring resonator

Abstract

A novel fractal dual-mode microstrip bandpass filter design has beenintroduced in an attempt to produce filters with highly miniaturizedsize for modern wireless applications. The filter structure has been gen-erated based on the 3rd iteration Minkowski-like pre-fractal geometry,using the conventional dual-mode square ring resonator as the initiator inthe fractal generation process. The space-filling property, self-similarityand the diagonal symmetry of the structures corresponding to the suc-cessive iteration levels of this fractal geometry have found to producereduced size filter structures with accepted performance. The bandpassfilter structure produced by the third iteration of this fractal geometrycan be considered as a novel design with adequate performance. Thisdesign structure possesses a size reduction of about 72% compared withthe conventional dual-mode square ring resonator operating at the samefrequency and using the same substrate material. In addition, the newdesign technique seems reliable, since it provides the filter designers withmore degree of freedom and further size reduction as compared withthose reported in the literatures.

Abstract

In this paper, a new method is applied to calculate the magneticenergies of active regions and sunspots in satellites images. Digital im-ages from the Solar & Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) satellite areused in this study. The magnetic energies are calculated using the Isingmodel, which has been modified for our application. The new algorithmis integrated with our existing ASAP system (Automate Solar ActivityPrediction). Extensive testing was carried out and the promising resultsare obtained that will aid in enhancing the accuracy of our automatedreal-time solar prediction system are presented.

Improvement of array radiation patternby element position perturbation

Abstract

Position perturbation of the array elements is used for reducing thesidelobe structure in the radiation pattern of phased arrays. Resultsof computer simulations showed good improvements in the side lobestructure as compared to the equal size linear array. A quantitativemeasure of the improvement is postulated. Results are compared withthose obtainable from the technique of adding 2 auxiliary elements.

Abstract

The cellular mobile communication industry has recently been one ofthe fastest growing industries. This paper presents efficient techniquesin the design of switching mode class E power amplifiers by reducingswitching losses. A typical class E circuit has been design-optimizedfor 900 and 1800 MHz. Matching networks are used to reduce powerconsumption. The simulated results were analyzed in terms of outputpower, dissipated power in the transistor, and efficiency. Efficiencieshigher than 67% could be achieved

Abstract

In this paper, a new design of spatial filter for uniform linear array ispresented. The array factor is expressed in terms of cosine, sine and lin-ear functions of frequency which serves as an alternative to Chebyshevpolynomials. The simple filter design has good stopband attenuationwith the use of trigonometric functions with less filter complexity. Novelslope equalization technique of the filter design reduces ripples at thetransition edges hence further improves its stopband attenuation. Pro-posed filter replaces Dolph-Chebyshev window in the design of a uniformlinear array beamformer.
