Box 674 Cessnock NSW 2325 Phone:0419421154 Fax: 02-49914949 E:[email protected] A great “hello” to all, February upon us already! The year is passing at an alarming rate, and as always there is a lot for us to do. Before we get to the “to-do” list, may I remind you that we’ve had a “yippee” moment with world Rotary contributions reaching the $200m mark in the END POLIO NOW campaign, before the target date, and then the “reward” of the Gates Foundation dropping another $50m into the eradication bucket. Some more “yippee” moments, with the announcing of several Rotarians to receive Australia Day awards – congratulations to Bob Nelson and Dr. Geoff Rickaby from Belmont Club and Wendy Stein from Salamander Bay Club. More good news is that we’ve got two new “terra” Clubs on the horizon, and one electronic Club is likely to take off. We’ve applied for the Provisional Club of Kurri Kurri Sunrise to receive a charter, and before the end of the month, we will create the Provisional Club of Green Hills. PDG Don Stephens has worked hard to find the right connections to enable the proposed e-Club to take shape, and so my appeal to you is that you notify Don of any possible prospective members known to you. E-Clubs still operate under the same systems of membership, but they can be accessed from anywhere in the world, which makes it easy for those with lots of travelling to do, or people in more remote locations to be part of the Rotary family. I will return to the “to-do list”! Firstly, there is registration for the District Conference – to “Warren – the heart of the Macquarie Valley” (and the heart of great country hospitality!). Secondly, there is the matter of the End Polio campaign. We know that to ensure that polio really is conquered, there are still many dollars required. These dollars will be spent in training personnel to make the personal and community contacts that are so necessary, so that the personnel may gain the trust of people in the more remote parts of the countries where polio is still a problem. That is seen as the only way forward now – the big national campaigns have been successful – as we see in India – but there are many places where natural distrust is a barrier. So my appeal there is to ensure that we don’t give up on the contributions! Our Rotary Foundation was given a big boost from this District last year, and now is the time to look to matching or bettering our efforts of last year. Donations this year will come back to benefit us in the 2014-15 year, so to have some funds to “spend”, we have to kick in now! Have a great month – it is our Rotary World Understanding Month. Cheers to all, Janette . GSE exchange The outgoing team for the GSE exchange to D1460, Denmark and Lithuania, has been selected. Greetings to Presidents and Secretaries,

I hope that you have enjoyed a relaxing break over the festive season. I notice from bulletins that Clubs are starting to get back to “normal” – meetings and projects are under way again. Here’s hoping that you will all have a happy productive rest of this Rotary year.

Even at this early stage of the year, I have a few important things to bring to your attention: Please see the note from District Secretary, John Retallick regarding the urgent need to find a person to take over the role of District Governor Nominee. The time is close to when we have to make a decision, so please think about those talented people in your midst who may well fulfil the role – a most rewarding one indeed. This person would become District Governor, 2013-14. I am happy to send a copy of the nomination form as required.

Speaking of District, please remember that we are still under a threat of losing our District. Please also remember my request that we end this year with just one more member in each Club than we had at 30th June, 2011. Some Clubs have done very well, and achieved more than just the one, but others have not yet been able to reach that goal. There is a message at the end of the bulletin from Bourke Club which is worth repeating – “Somebody asked you to join Rotary – have you asked anyone?”

I guess you will be receiving accounts from both Rotary International (semi-annual dues), and our District. These will be based on membership numbers, and the RI ones are really crucial – they indicate our true membership for the District.

Our District ones are based on information in the Blue Book on Line. Having spent some days before Christmas addressing envelopes (not to be confused with the Christmas cards!), I’m sure that there are some Clubs with out-of-date membership records, or incorrect contact details. Secretaries will notice that we’ve had to use the Club Post Office box as the only point of contact in some cases. (We’re getting some “RTS” ones as well). So my big plea – get those records up to date. They are crucial for our District administration. If you need to check on the codes to change entries, please just send me a short message, and I can give you that information.

Regards to all in 2012,

Janette.

Winner of Belmont Rotary Raffle John Parkes of Swansea was the winner of the giant camping raffle recently conducted by the Rotary Club of Belmont. The winner of the week’s holiday at Port Macquarie was Simon Ormsby, New Lambton. $12,500 was raised and this will be spent on community projec Sue and Tony Larkin (raffle co-coordinators)

Youth Protection Matters

Involvement in New Generations programs is a feature in the life of most Rotary clubs. While Youth Exchange programs are amongst the longest running of these, an array of enrichment programs is being offered to young people across D9670. Your club probably has involvement in one or more of these programs.

The safety and well-being of all involved is a priority. The District Youth Protection Committee is in the process of developing and implementing a Youth Protection Policy that meets our RI and NSW state obligations for all New Generations programs. The planned date for ratification of the policy is at the 2013 District Conference.

In the meantime, there are some obligations for Rotarians and clubs: NSW requires that all volunteers (and that means Rotarians, their partners and children over 18)

who are involved in any way with children and young children must lodge a Volunteer/Student

Declaration. This can be found online at https://check.kids.nsw.gov.au/volunteer-declaration.php

The declaration can be filled in online and printed, or printed then filled in.

Children and young people are those under 18.

Each Rotary Club should appoint a Youth Protection Officer who is responsible for ensuring the completion and storage of declarations by all members.

More information about youth protection matters will be available to clubs through district training seminars, the D9670 website and from the committee.

Ambassadorial Scholar Graduates

District 9670’s Ambassadorial Scholar Kate Fleming has recently graduated with a Masters of Migration from London University. Kate was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Belmont and received a Scholarship Grant from the Rotary Foundation. Kate sent the following report.

My graduation took place in December. It was quite grand being held in the central Westminster hall, just 100m from the houses of Parliament.

I am working full time in the migration branch of the Australia High Commission. I am in the temporary residents team, we process visas for people resident in the UK who wish to stay in Australia for anywhere from a couple of hours up to 4 years. I have been chosen to travel to Dubai, in the near future, to provide information about migrating to an Australia at an expo. It's a great privilege which I'm really excited about.

When the London Olympics comes around Pete (my husband) and I will be packing our bags ready to move back to Australia. We plan to move to Canberra so I can really get my teeth into the public service. I'm quite keen to remain with immigration but to get close to policy making and political side of things.

Pete is getting closer to the end of his course (Diploma of Horticulture at Kew Gardens). He is in Israel now and spent a month at the Botanical Gardens Jerusalem. Once he is back there will be a mad dash to hand in his dissertation then he's off to Spain for 2 weeks. Kind regards to Belmont Rotary Club and District 9670 Foundation Committee, Kate

Rotary International District 9670 Conference

Warren 16, 17 and 18 March 2012

All Rotarians and their partners are invited to the 2012 Rotary District 9670 District Conference to be held in the central western town of Warren in March, 2012.

Warren is the Heart of the Macquarie Valley, and is situated on the banks of that river 120 kilometres north-west of Dubbo and 465 kms west of Newcastle. It is a typical and quiet rural town with a population of 2200. It describes itself as the Wool and Cotton Capital of Australia. Other local produce includes wheat, oats, sorghum and maize.

District Governor Janette Jackson chose Warren as the location for the conference partly because of the hardship the local inhabitants have endured through a prolonged drought and then flood, and the possibility of an influx of Rotarians for a conference being able to introduce a much-needed economic injection of funds to the town. And going to Warren is an adventure and Thinking outside the Square! Warren Rotary Club and the local Shire Council are 100% behind the venture. The conference facilities are excellent and local businesses are involved with catering.

There are motels, hotels and caravan parks at which conference attendees can stay. Warren is used to having influxes of people for various events, and a system of “home stays” is in place to enable couples and families to stay with local residents. There are no strangers in Warren – only friends you have not yet met!

Information about accommodation and further details about the Warren District, places of interest to visit, sporting facilities and preliminary details of the conference program are posted on the District Website at: www.rotary9670.org.au

District Conference, Warren (cont)

Planning for the conference is well under way. There will be an extended period for dinner on the Friday evening at Warren Racecourse/Showground so that people can arrive up until about 9.30pm and still get a feed. While there will be a bit of country-style entertainment, it is really a time for old friends to meet and to make new friends. Both Saturday and Sunday breakfasts will be at the Warren United Services Club. DG Janette hopes that the majority of conference delegates will attend these breakfasts, but the reality is that some will elect to do their own thing for breakfast, either in their caravan, or with their hosts. For that reason, the cost of the breakfast has NOT been included in the base fee so that those who do not join in will not be penalised cost-wise.

We are still working out arrangements for sporting fixtures – the heavy rain in the past few weeks has caused some delay in being able to plan for some of these things. We may yet have a quoits tournament going – look under your house or in the back of the garage and drag out the old set and get in some practice – you could win the Staffordshire Pot for your club – but you have to mount a challenge!

Guest speakers are organised, Rotary Program speakers are organised and we are looking forward to an interesting and educational time! John Lamb, former Youth Exchange Chairman in this District and more recently District Governor in District 9570 in Queensland, has a dry wit and it will be great to hear what he has to say on behalf of Rotary World President Kalyan Banerjee. It will also create the opportunity to renew acquaintances with him and partner Claire.

Don’t forget that the Saturday is St. Patrick’s Day and the Governor’s Dinner on the Saturday evening has a “green theme”. It may be an expensive evening for anyone who does not wear something green on the night! And don’t forget the DG’s Table Decoration Challenge – but please remember the size constraints contained in earlier messages to Club Presidents.

This year, the Youth Exchange Students will be part of the conference and not banished to some far-off place. They will be there as monitors, as general messengers and as hosts to visitors. If they seem to be having difficulty with something, please offer assistance. Updating bulletins will be issued during the next few weeks to keep you abreast of further arrangements. These will be sent to Club Presidents, who are asked to disseminate them to club members as soon as possible.

The “early bird” registration offer ends at midnight on 17th February. Get your registration in now if you want to take advantage of the offer!

We look forward to seeing you at Warren between 16th and 18th March next!

Kidwalk Dynamic Mobility System Appliance

In early September 2011 President Warren Collins - The Rotary Club of Newcastle Harbour received a request for financial assistance from a Physiotherapist with Ageing, Disability and Home Care – Maitland Office seeking financial assistance to purchase a Kidwalk Dynamic Mobility System Appliance to assist a Rutherford-based family of a delightful 18 month old boy, one of twins, who has Cerebral Palsy.

This little boy was in urgent need of a specialized, supportive walking frame, cost $5,594.00, in order to have a chance at developing walking. The longer the wait, the less likely he will walk. This little boy has a real will to succeed.

The Rotary Club of Newcastle Harbour decided to lead this fundraiser and approached a number of surrounding Rotary Clubs for financial support. The combined efforts of the Rotary Clubs of Dubbo Macquarie, Kurri Kurri, Maitland, Newcastle Harbour and individual members of Newcastle Harbour Rotary Club raised $2,899.00 towards the cost of the appliance. The balance was provided by the Barkuma Neighbourhood Centre Kurri Kurri.

The little boy has the appliance and his walking has progressed immensely.

The Rotary Club of Newcastle Harbour is most appreciative of the support received for this worthy cause.

Rotarian Gerry Wild Rotary Club of Newcastle Harbour

Burn Victim, Hadassah Aikari

Hadassah Aikari, aged 21 years, received horrific burns to 60% of her body in a kerosene accident in 2005 in a remote village in the Gulf Region of PNG. She was found by my husband David and I in 2006 when we were on an Aus Aid mission. Her injury was already 18 months old and she weighed 27 kilos and was frozen on the sitting position due to contracture formation.

With the help of Rotarians in District 9670 and the Rotary Club of Newcastle Sunrise we managed to raise $50,000 for her treatment in Australia.

After six months of treatment and rehabilitation Hadassah, returned home to continue her studies which were cut short at the time of the accident. A brilliant student who was due to start training to become a teacher. On her return in 2007 she gained a diploma in Office Administration and employment in Port Moresby. She has also set up a burns support group as there are many untreated burn victims in PNG.

Hadassah return to Newcastle in 2009 to thank all who support her in helping her to regain a normal life. She now has all the reasons to carry on as she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in September, called Lyn Nirop Aikari.
