IM Team News - Pilot Group Updates

News from the Germany Pilot GroupNews from the Germany Pilot GroupNews from the Germany Pilot Group

Greetings from Germany!

Summer has finally arrived in Germany (or at least in parts of Germany)! And SWE Germany had its first Wine & Webinar

Wednesdays hosted by Haley at her apartment. We had a total of 7 participants of which 4 were women. The response was

positive and future Wine and Webinar Wednesdays will be scheduled in the future.

On April 21st, 2012 we held our annual Step Forward Conference in Mannheim,

Germany at the John Deere Forum. Janet Koster, special director for SWE

International Initiatives, opened the conference. The morning technical session,

was presented by Casee Eisele, of John Deere USA and former member of SWE

Germany, on “TRIZ- The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving.”

The two afternoon sessions were presented by employees of Continental Reifen Deutschland GmbH, Katie Herta

and Haley Carney. Katie presented on “How to get and keep an International Audience Attention during a Presentation” and Haley presented on

“Discovering your personality in and outside of Conflict.” The conference attracted men and women from around Germany and was a great

success. Thanks to Anca for all of her great planning!

Please feel free to contact me via [email protected] if you have further questions, comments or want to get involved.

J-Win CONFERENCE

We had J-Win Conference in Tokyo. It consisted of two parts. In the

first part, we had four sessions.

1: Speech of J-Win activities of 2011 by Ms. Uchinaga J-Win Board

Chair

In the first session, Ms. Uchinaga spoke about 2011 J-Win activities;

J-win started 2 new networks to expand women’s network. One is

"J-Win Executive network "; which members are women executives in

major companies, and the other is "J-Win Alumni network", which

members are those who have participated J-Win activities previously.

2: Reports of J-Win working groups' activities by J-Win female member

Following the Ms. Uchinaga's speech, in the second session, all nine

working groups of J-Win presented the result of 2011 activities

and plans for the second year. In engineer's working group, Ms. Nak-

agawa presented our activities and plans for the second year. Other

groups' activities motivated us; engineer's working group.

3: Keynote speech by Ms. Hiroko Ota a professor of The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) and

Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy from 2006 to 2008

In the third session, Ms. Ota gave a keynote speech titled "Growth strategy for Japan ". She spoke about strategies

for revival from the earthquake, challenges of globalize, and challenges for the world's fastest aging society. Her

speech greatly impressed us. We recognize the Japanese current situation and think about what we should do for

future of Japan.

4: J-Win award ceremony

The final session of the first part is the J-Win award ceremony. J-Win awards “J-Win Diversity Award” to a company

which achieves successful results for diversity promotion. This year’s winner is “Astellas Pharma Inc”. “Astellas

Pharma Inc” has been a J-Win member since an established year, and has worked aggressively to promote female

workes. One of our members is from “Astellas Pharma Inc”. Congratulations!

The Second part is a party for new networking. Mr. Nakagawa, Minister of State for

Measures for Declining Birthrate, and Gender Equality, Mr. Edano, Minister of Economy,

Trade and Industry and J-Win advisory board members joined the party and gave us

cheerful messages. Finally, we called out J-Win slogan ”Woman to the top!”

Our J-Win final year as a member is starting! and we will do our best to achieve our goal.

Please cheer for us!

It has been one year since the earthquake struck the northern part of Japan, and we appreciate your kindness and great support from all over

the world.

This quarter is the end of first year for us; the engineer's working group of J- Win third period. We had a two-day off-site meeting in January,

and ”J-Win Conference” in March. In this letter, we’d like to report on these two events.

Two-day off-site meeting

We had a “Two days meeting” in Tokyo in cold January. In the meeting, we wrapped up our first year activities and made plans for our second

year. In our second year, we plan to start two activities.

One is "Session for junior high school teachers" to increase the number of female students who want to be engineers or scientists. This

activity was advised by Ms. Betty Shanahan, Executive Director & CEO of SWE during the round table we had with her prior to the career

development seminar in Tokyo, last December. We plan to have workshops for junior high school teachers to discuss how to take female

students’ interests in science.

The other one is "Career development for women engineers". In Japan, the number of women engineers is very small. Furthermore, few

companies have women executives with engineering background. We will investigate a situation of career advancement of women engi-

neers in Japanese companies and develop a proposal for an improvement.

At life Technologies, we celebrate diversity and inclusion as just a natural way of working together. Diversity and inclusion are woven deeply

into our company culture. A vibrant, powerful mix of talent, backgrounds and different ideas — because we know we are stronger together.

We demonstrate our commitment to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout our people practices, outreach and support of our

employees. For example, in 2011 we trained 400 leaders in the art of managing inclusion. Our leaders are focused on creating inclusive envi-

ronments where all are welcomed, individual points of view are heard and contributions valued.

Our commitment doesn’t stop there. We also sponsor partnerships and encourage our people to get involved with organizations l ike National

Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Women in Technology International and GettingHired. We promote in-

ternal networks like IWIN, which is sponsored by women at Life Technologies, to encourage people to excel through personal and professional

development opportunities.

As we prepare to close out another impactful SWE Year, I reflect on the many accomplishments of the International Membership Team. In

FY12, under the outstanding leadership of Jennifer Patterson, this team has worked tirelessly to promote the presence of SWE globally – and

with amazing results!

The IMT forged ahead in FY12 with a new regional awareness campaign to secure corporate support for SWE members & SWE efforts abroad.

As a result, corporate champions for international SWE efforts are being identified – with hopes for continued development of corporate sup-

port networks for international SWE efforts.

Additionally, international pilot groups continue their strong representation of SWE’s Values & Mission. The Germany Pilot Group hosted its

3rd Professional Development Conference in Manheim in April of this year, and continues to plan other outreach events! The India Pilot Team

is working diligently to host a symposium in August, with plans to fund the attendance of 10 US students! Finally, SWE welcomed its first

International Collegiate Interest Group – Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey!

It only stands to reason that in the years to come, SWE will continue is growth & presence internationally, and be the premier organization for

aspiring, advancing, and achieving women in S.T.E.M. across all borders!

It has been my privilege to have worked with the team in FY12 as your BOD liaison. Best wishes for continued progress

& success of SWE’s International Efforts in FY13 7 beyond!

KOC University Update

Report by Benay Uzer ([email protected])

SWE-International Pilot Group @ KOC University, Istanbul, Turkey

Page 9 SWE IM Team FY12 Third/Fourth Quarter Newsletter

We as the engineering girls from Koç University are very happy to be a part of

this great organization. Since we started our SWE journey (December 2011),

in our social life or at classes I feel that we became much more self confident

and proud of our majors with the organizations we have made and projects

we have accomplished so far.

Everyday we are learning how engineering can broad our perspective and

understanding in everything in life and how it makes us look from a different

window than other people look. Since SWE is in my life I did not only find a

chance to get further my knowledge of engineering, but also I got a unique

chance to get to know some very nice people and have good relationships,

which are actually attracting me more to SWE :).

When I was in the exchange program at Drexel University for a semester, the won-

derful people I met from Drexel SWE and UPenn SWE are a great example of it.

In Turkey, the idea of "girls in engineering" is not as common as it is US as it is a

developing country, We want to develop this notion by focusing on the ones in the

center of this idea "GIRLS".

We know that the younger they start to get to know engineering and science, it will

help make their decision in the future by being much more aware of what they

really want. And therefore we also want to start programs that SWE has been do-

ing for girls for many years.

So far we had a chance to meet some mid-

dle school girls and talk with them about

building programs via organizations that

demonstrate to them engineering and sci-

ence through not only theory but also prac-

tical exercises.

And the feedback we got from these won-

derful girls showed us that they are much

more willing than we thought. And this

make us feel that is much more important

and mandatory to start these projects.

A special thanks to Siddika Demir, Semahat Demir, and Jen Patterson for

your support encouragement, and inclusive sense of leadership that has

made formation of this group possible.

Finally I want to thank SWE for supporting and encouraging us to be bet-

ter engineers who know how great of a potential we got. As it says Aspire-

Advance-Achieve!

International Work Experiences

Worked At: USA | Native Country: Venezuela Anna Govea ([email protected])

Page 11 SWE IM Team FY12 Third/Fourth Quarter Newsletter

I was born in Paris, France when my father was doing his medical specialization at the Sorbonne University.

Then we moved to Maracaibo-Venezuela where I grow up. I graduated from “Universidad Del Zulia” Venezue-

la in 1990 and worked for 10 years with Venezuelan National Oil Company (PDVSA) at different positions as a

production engineer of Onshore Heavy oil and Light Oil Fields.

Then, had a 16 year of success with a career with the Chevron family companies where I held various posi-

tions at the Western Venezuela Reservoir Management Team and Mid Continent Asset Development Team

(USA), four of them working as a PDVSA employee assigned into Chevron project.

Currently, I am the Wolfcamp Company Operated Process Lead at Asset Development team (USA). My main

responsibilities are Leading data management as a Wolfcamp Key Documents and Collaboration Solution

content manager; Implementing Integrated Master Project timeline linked with each individual project time-

line to determine critical path; Leading and Coordination of Asset development plans and annual update;

Production forecast rollups for Integrated Production System Optimization and business planning.

At the end of 2007, I applied for an international position as Asset Development Reservoir Engineer at Permian Basin -USA, after that I

started to prepare myself about the foreign country, the culture and tried to understand local systems (health, weather, religion, essential

services, business, museums, libraries, nightlife, recreation and social environment) in order to adapt and work effectively in a new and

different cultural environment.

After I moved to West Texas, I figured out the differences in business practices and management styles. Work in Venezuela is different

that work in America. For Americans it is necessary to have certain contact with people and respect personal space and privacy, Venezue-

lans maintain our relationships with others, keeping constantly in contact, visiting friends and family, making parties, reunions or just to

drink a coffee, and gathering together frequently.

It is not easy to make friends at the office but it is not impossible, I have good American friends and other citizen friends from the office.

Now, I am in a new location with the same company and we have a common philosophy. People have different style of work, customs and

culture but we have the same company culture and philosophy, we have similar processes at different locations.

With the company I volunteer to work with the employee networks and to support community activities. I

built my network inside and outside the company. After four years I have a huge network that supports

each other when needed. Also, I introduced my culture to my co-workers through diverse events with food,

presentations, and craft gifts. In the picture you can see a native costume form female Native (Guajira).

One of my coworkers talked to me about the SWE organization and I became a member since then. In

2012 I became more active with SWE by participating in the Region C Conference at Lubbock, TX and in-

spired many young women through casual conversation to continue to aspire in engineering.

Even with the cold weather, in West Texas, people show their

kindness to everyone on the street from either America or

anywhere else. You always see a smile in the face of a

stranger. We have cold fall and winter for my taste since I

came from a tropical hot weather, but from here I can travel to

other places.

One similarity that I like about both cultures, Venezuelans and

Americans is both are very religious. Beyond religions, people

in both countries are very faithful to their beliefs and this de-

votion becomes part of tradition which is respected in its own

way.

An important reminder that the next deadline for SWE’s Professional Development Grant Program is coming up – 1st of Every Month.

Are you interested in putting on events but are unsure about how to obtain funding? One possibility is a SWE Program Development Grant.

Any international member can apply for grant funds, even if you are not affiliated with one of the pilot groups. You can obtain information on

Program Development Grants through the SWE Communities at http://communities.swe.org/COP/ProgramDevelopmentGrant/. If you would

like to apply for a Program Development Grant and have questions, please contact me at [email protected].

What are Program Development Grants and how do you apply? Funds can be used for outreach activities, for professional development activi-

ties, or for diversity issues and training, and the proposal should address one of SWE’s strategic goals. Program Development Grant proposals

should include an executive summary; project description, benefits, and costs and resources; deliverables; metrics; project l ife; and budget.

An explanation of each of these items, proposal forms, and the proposal submission procedure can be found in detail on the SWE Communi-

ties (http://communities.swe.org/COP/ProgramDevelopmentGrant/).

Now you can also submit repeated events not just new events!

FY12 INTERNATIONAL MEMBER TEAM VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

The International Member Team is always looking for additional volunteers to participate in our

group. Participation can range from joining in on our monthly conference calls to discuss issues of rele-

vance to SWE International Members to taking a more active leadership role in the group.

Volunteering offers many benefits...Learn or develop a new skill.

Volunteering is the perfect conduit to develop a new skill or to discover a new talent. It is never too late to

realize new skills or accumulate knowledge. Employers are often seeking well-rounded individuals who

have good teamwork and goal setting skills. Planning and implementing a major fundraising event can

develop goal setting, planning and budgeting skills. Serving on a volunteer committee or board is a great way to learn group dy-

namics and team work. Serving as a committee chair increases facilitation skills. Painting a mural or making banners could high-

light your art talents. The possibilities are endless.

SWE International is always looking for new volunteers to take over certain activities. If you are interested in taking over a

leadership position or participating on a committee, please contact Katie at [email protected].

We want to hear from you about your International Work Experiences!

If you have taken an international assignment or have travelled abroad for work and would like to share your sto-

ry and learning experience, please send it to [email protected].

Your valuable input and tips may help another person have a much smoother transition and

make life a lot easier for them in a new place!
