EMO Hannover between the drop in orders and the need for investments

Orders falling, both for the foreign market and for domestic demand. The numbers of the second quarter, which came out amid the third quarter, right at full recovery after the summer break, generated a global shock. In Germany as in Italy, two of the leading nations in the machine tool sector, braking is abrupt and obvious. In Italy, 31% less than the corresponding period of the previous year, with -43% on the domestic market and a less dramatic -28.5% on the foreign market, represent indicators of a situation that is just under a fifth lower than 2015, not exactly a record year in the Italian manufacturing industry. As far as Germany is concerned, the drop is decidedly smaller, around 20%, mainly focused on non-European markets, while in Europe the decrease in orders is around 5%. Part of the picture is the fact that for Italian manufacturing companies, Germany, especially car companies, represent a large part of foreign orders and are therefore largely a party to the drop in orders by more than a quarter. The reasons for the decline, largely expected, but certainly surprising in proportions, especially after a generally positive 2018 and in Italy far more than positive, are varied: on the one hand the political instability weighs, which penalizes the machine tool market on a global level, to the point that in Asia and the Far East they are certainly not faring better than in the Old Continent; on the other hand, instead, the decline in the orders of the automotive industry, influenced by the conversion of the plants towards new engines, to which is added a general difficulty of the automobile market, decisively influences. In Italy, then, industrialists complain of an intermittent policy of investment cuts, first blocked and then relaunched by the Growth Decree: in conclusion, companies are asking for stable policies with regard to hyper-depreciation and super-depreciation, practically calling for stabilization of incentives, which, by nature, would also be positive from the point of view of increased orders and purchasing power, while on the other it would establish the principle that Italian companies fail to develop the market without state aids, a principle indeed dangerous. If structural changes are to be introduced, then more than on incentives to purchase it would be advisable to intervene on tax wedge and taxes on labor. In short, it is in a climate of substantial uncertainty, also linked to the need to introduce technological innovations relating to Industry 4.0, an action that is not easy in a period of declining orders, that we are going to Emo Hannover: an edition not among the best, both as far as the climate in the corridors is concerned, both for the actual interest of the visitors, but certainly a fundamental moment to take stock of the economic situation and the initiatives to be taken.

proved flow channels, conformal cooling or lightweight construc-tion. At TRUMPF, this optimiza-tion potential is also used and by utilizing AM components, e.g. for optimized component cooling with simultaneous weight savings in the machine tools.

How does AM reduce produc-tion costs for components and finished products and conse-quently market prices?

Production costs at AM can be re-duced by a monolithic design of the components. The freedom of design provided by the technolo-gy makes it possible to combine entire assemblies into one com-ponent and manufacture them in one piece. This not only reduces the number of parts, but also the assembly effort. In addition, the monolithic design can reduce po-tential leakage, e.g. in media-car-rying components, thus reducing the risk of leakage and testing costs. Individual series produc-tion can also be carried out faster and cheaper with AM. We see this, for example, in den-tal technology. A 3D printer can produce more than 60 teeth in just a few hours without the need for a technician to control the printing process. This advantage enables a cost reduction in the manufacturing process, which is the reason why 3D printing has been established for years in den-tal technology.

In which way can AM create add-ed value for the products’ buyers apart from cost reduction?

ual products to be manufactured economically in small quantities. TRUMPF is one of the pioneers at KI and AM. In the field of AI, we presented the world’s first voice-controlled laser. At AM, we develop possibilities for digitizing the process chain - from incom-ing orders to the finished compo-nent.

How can 3d printing improve technical skills of components and equipment for machine tools?

At AM, designers have much more freedom in the design of components. This enables com-plex components to be produced that would not be possible con-ventionally. As a result, they can focus on the function according to the prin-ciple “form follows function”. Accordingly, components can be further optimized through im-

Trumpf presented a voice-con-trolled laser with artificial intel-ligence at the Laser trade show in Munich. At Emo in Hannover, few weeks ago,, Trumpf showed an Additive Manufacturing pro-cess with Inconel that allows a 50% time-saving. Innovation and new researches are developed daily both in AI and AM: we take stock of the situation with Frank Peter Wüst, Senior Application Expert at Trumpf Additive Manu-facturing.

Artificial Intelligence and Ad-ditive Manufacturing: how are they related, which are the latest applications designed by Trumpf?

Artificial intelligence (AI) and Ad-ditive Manufacturing are some of the most important future trends in industrial manufacturing. They should not be missing in modern productions, because they ena-ble, among other things, individ-

In EMO2019 Trumpf will show

new applications of additive

manufacturing: can you explain

more?

We show new applications from

the areas of 3D printing and dig-

itization.

These include, for example, a

3D printer that is connected to a

cloud as a future topic prospec-

tive. We’re also showing a com-

ponent of the Heinrich Hertz

communications satellite that

we’ve reduced in weight by 55

percent.ties in the tube sector by a combi-nation with AM.

AM offers a high potential for functional optimization of com-ponents and systems due to its freedom from geometry. Flow-op-timized channels can reduce pressure losses or achieve high-er performance ranges for sys-tems through optimized cooling geometries or lightweight con-struction. A concrete example is the use of conformal cooling of injection moulds, which reduc-es cycle times and allows parts to be produced more quickly.

Which are the new frontiers of Additive Manufacturing in Tubes sector?

In principle, a lot can be printed with AM, but it is not necessarily economical or sensible. Rather, AM should only be used where it makes technological sense, e.g. for complex, compact geometries that can only be realized with classical tube constructions in a costly or even impossible way. Therefore it is more important to expand the application possibili-

The need to obtain complex systems or simply to assemble pieces, leads to having to act heavily on the final structure of the product, with activities such as tapering, threading, cambering and many other processes aimed at obtaining a different shape of the tube , which combines and is functional to the required processing. These activities are carried out by specific machines which perform the work with simplicity and precision. Often deformation is necessary even in the smallest details, for example we may think of the automotive sector in which precision machining is increasingly required. It is therefore very likely that there are numerous examples right before our eyes, but that they go unnoticed not knowing the whole production chain of an artifact. Tube Today wanted to explore the feelings of some companies directly involved in this sector. Performing this work, the large number of subjects implicated in deformation jumped at first sight, a symptom of a great need to use it in industrial processes, and not only.

About UsM.T.S. has been working in the field of tube work since 1980. Our production line includes:Hydraulic units and special working benches. High quality mechanics permit maximum yield during operation and assure excellent results. A very rugged design and the use of “name brand” hydraulic components assure many years of reliable performance.M.T.S. units are strong and versatile. They are utilized in many types of tube working such as:Punching - hole slotting, notching, cutting and punching at the same time, flattening, end forming. The study and the planning of the units is performed by our technical office to completely satisfy the specific demands of the customer. The principal uses are in the following sectors:Metal Furniture - Household items - Clothes horses - Ironing boards - Cars - Bicycles - baby articles and toysLadders - scaffoldings - Gas water pipe ducts - Shelves - Radiators - Accessories for campers and caravans - Chairs and sofas - Orthopaedics - Lawn mowers - Barbecues etc.M.T.S. ensure quality and reliability of our own products, from the stages of planning and testing through the productive trial. All of this assures excellent service, spare parts and post sale assistance.Customer satisfaction and continuous improvement are the essential components on which we base our work each and every day.

Special working benchesM.T.S working benches are made combining various hydraulic units, in order to allow for the completion of multiple tasks in a single operation whenever possible. As a result, there are many types of solutions:-Single board or bench - where the workpiece can be manually loaded/unloaded-Working bench - where the workpiece can be automatically loaded and manually or semi-automatically unloaded.-Single working bench - inserted in a fully automatic production line.Personal safety is of the greatest importance to us, and for this reason, it is possible to supply our machines with the safety systems necessary to satisfy CE regulations.Hydraulic punching unitsWith these types of units two types of holes can be made. In one case, the punches enter one side of the tube and exit from the other, while a matrix bush prevents deformationIn other case it is possible to make two holes with the entrance of punches in the opposite sides of tube or non trespassing holes. It is possible to make units capable of punching multiple holes at the same time and make holes without deformation using an inside mandrel.Hydraulic flattening unitsWith these types of unit’s materials can be flattened into any form while simultaneously punching holes and/or cutting the head of the tube. The planning, the dimensional calculation of structure and the use of the highest quality materials, allow for the impressive resistence

to force which is necessary for these types of operations.Hydraulic end forming unitsWith these types of units, it is possible to either increase or decrease a particular section of tube in order to allow them to be connected. It is possible to create an independent work-station, installed on a hydraulic pump with safety systems.Hydraulic cutting unitsThese units are used to divide a tube in two parts or to cut the terminal part. They are often used for symmetrical tubes which can be worked on simultaneously. In

this way two equal tubes can be created in a single operation. A special unit capable of making pre-cuts can be designed in order to avoid deformation by the entrance of the cutting blade.Hydraulic grooving unitsIt is possible to make grooves in the head of a tube where it is necessary to weld two tubes together.Classic units perform this operation with the use of a punch which enters the tube on one side and exits from the other. In cases where the tube mustn’t be deformed a special unit which cuts from the inside out can be used.Hydraulic bending unitsWith these types of units, it is possible to create bends of usually less than 90°, where we want to execute other operations at the same time.CNC Bending MachineWe also manufacture CNC bending under the brand Star Technology. We built an all electric bending machines with hydraulic clamping, available in 13 different automation levels, from the simplest model CNB up to the most complete CN6 with 8 machine capacities, able to bend tubes from 4mm dia. x 0.5 mm wall to 150 mm dia. X 12 mm wall.

R.E.C.A. Srl is a family company founded in 1974, at the beginning it focused on the metal furnishing sector. After a few years R.E.C.A. began to diversify its production by settling in the industrial and motorcycle sectors. In particular, it becomes a Piaggio s.p.a. supplier. In 2008, due also to the general economical crisis., it implemented a further diversification of markets and sectors. And currently its customers belong to 9 different markets , national and international. In 2015 A photovoltaic plant was installed producing about 60% of the energy needsThe factory covers a total area of 6500m2, with a number of employees that goes from 30 to 35 persons, depending on the production period. R.E.C.A. srl is specialized in tube processing (cutting, laser tube, bending, shaping, mechanical molding and welding) and has experience with several materials (iron, stainless steel, aluminum, brass and copper)Thanks to its technical department, it is able to design and manufacture equipment for its own production (molds, control systems).

In its 111th year, BOGE presents the S 111-4 anniversary compressorThe company founder Otto Boge looks on astutely from the white side of the machine: however, it is not just the design that makes the S 111-4 anniversary compressor from BOGE special. The exclusive machine ver-sion that is part of the popular S-series, from the Bielefeld-based com-pressed air specialist, is more efficient than ever and stands out with its unique features. However, please note that it is only available for the duration of the anniversary year – BOGE was 111 years old in Novem-ber. Is everything o.k.? Or will it soon be time for the next service? The S 111-4 anniversary compressor lets users know its operating condition at a single glance, and can even do this remotely: For the first time, BOGE has integrated the traditional status notification into the body of the ma-chine as an easily visible light strip. The LED bar at the upper edge of the compressor reliably and conveniently indicates any anomalies, even in vast production halls. BOGE has also equipped its anniversary machine with numerous efficiency improvements as standard: the IE4 motor ensures the current possible maximum degree of efficiency for the drive. The specific power consumption has also been improved for the S 111-4 L. The compressor has been fitted with super-soundproofing as standard too: it works at a sound level of 67 dBA and is therefore the best in its class compared with competitor products. Normal conversa-tion is therefore possible next to the running compressor, and adjoining office spaces or production workplaces do not require any additional noise protection. With a drive capacity of 110 kW, the anniversary ma-chine is in a somewhat higher power range, for deployment in medium to large industrial plants. A direct drive, very few built-in maintenance parts and a low speed of 1500 r.p.m. make the S 111-4 L low-wear and low-maintenance, and therefore also extremely durable. Besides this, the compressor is impervious to dirt and dust particles from the ambient air thanks to its design. The design – bright white instead of the typi-cal BOGE blue – emphasises the significance that the compressed air

specialist attributes to this version of its screw compressor. Founded in 1907, and in its fourth generation as a family-run company, BOGE has stood for intelligent engineering, progressive solutions and convincing quality for 111 years. The S 111-4 L is exclusively available in the an-niversary year only. However, BOGE will then offer many of its special features on other machines in the S-4 series.

The visual search engine of the next dimensionNew CADENAS platform opens unique search functions for en-gineers to find and download millions of 3D CAD & BIM mo-dels from manufacturer catalogs available worldwideIf one is looking for information, search engines are often the first point of contact nowadays. When looking for a desired component, engineers and planners quickly reach the limits of conventional search engines, the results of whi-ch are usually too general and do not lead to the desired goal. The reason is obvious: Popular search engines are not focused on the te-chnical sector.CADENAS has now developed a visual search engine of the next dimension: With 3Dfind.it, engi-neers, purchasers and architects can find millions of 3D CAD & BIM models from hundreds of manufacturer catalogs available worldwide, including architectu-re, engineering, electrical engi-neering and electronic products, then download and use for their design. The search results con-sist of the digital product data of components that are made avai-lable by the manufacturers for en-gineering, design and planning. Many catalogs offer more than 150 different native and neutral CAD formats such as Autodesk Revit, Nemetschek ALLPLAN, Ar-chiCAD, Autodesk Inventor, NX, Solid Edge, PTC Creo Parametric, AutoCAD, CATIA or SOLIDWOR-KS.

Dollmar and BTB Transfer together for a customized transfer machineBTB Transfer based in Bovezzo, is one of the leaders of machine tool manufacturers in the Brescia area. Transfer machines, the result of BTB production, are used in a growing number of industrial sectors, from the petrochemical industry to household appliances, from fittings to the automotive sector. The collaboration with Dollmar begins with the request that BTB recei-ved from an important customer in the automotive sector based in Bra-

zil. The customer required not only a transfer machine but an full pro-cess of machining and washing. Among the various requirements there was the need for a continuous, single-phase washing with a cycle time of 9 seconds, with a product that could be not only degreasing but also protective. Therefore BTB, given the specific request, identified Dollmar Meccanica as the ideal partner for the complex project requested by the Brazilian customer. Dollmar Meccanica has therefore developed a spray washing tunnel with step advancement. Specifically, at the end of the manufacturing process the components are turned upside down on a vibrating belt.In the washing tunnel there is an optical device that recognizes the sin-gle metal parts. The components, then, undergo a laser marking, which guarantees to be able to monitor the progress of the process in the FINEP washing tunnel. Finally, in the last part of the washing process a cooling station is inserted which guarantees the final piece not to undergo di-mensional alterations. This is because all the components are subjected to dimensional control after washing, therefore the temperature of the pieces in output must not compromise the dimensional values. The spray washing tunnel and other devices are interconnected accor-ding to the logic of the industry 4.0.

Germany, sharp decline in machine tool orders Many sectors reluctant to invest

“In the second quarter, orders are once again more than twenty per cent down on last year’s strong figures,” said Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executi-ve Director of VDW (Verein Deutscher Werkzeugmaschinenfabriken – German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), Frankfurt am Main, com-menting on the result. “The base effect can no longer disguise the global decline in investment in mechanical and plant engineering,” Schäfer continued. The machine tool industry is not immune to the factors that are creating so much turbulence in the global economy as a whole and that are currently the subject of much discussion: “We are in the same boat as the other major international suppliers. Orders for machine tools have collapsed worldwide. Many countries are now having to pay the price for the almost daily international disputes being picked by politicians,” says Schäfer. The machine tool sector is a pure supplier of capital goods and equipment to industry, and as such is exposed to pressure from weak demand in the major customer industries, the engineering sector and the automotive industry. The latter is additionally undergoing a pro-tracted period of uncertainty as a result of the tentative transforma-tion process towards new drive technologies and is cutting back investment accordingly.Within the triad of suppliers, the Europeans are still performing most strongly. Orders from eu-rozone countries “only” fell by 5 per cent over the first six months, while those from non-eurozone countries were down by 28 per cent. The German machine tool industry ranks among the five largest spe-cialist groupings in the mechanical engineering sector. It provides production technology for metalworking applications in all branches of industry, and makes a crucial contribution towards innovation and enhanced productivity in the industrial sector as a whole. Due to its absolutely key role for industrial production, its development is an im-portant indicator for the economic dynamism of the industrial sector as such. In 2018, with around 73,500 employees (annual average in 2018, companies with more than 50 employees), the sector produced machi-nes and services worth 17.1 billion euros.

Digital yet sustainable How so? EMO Hannover 2019: Digital approaches to sustainable machining

Industrial processes can either be digital or sustainable – at least that is the belief of many who have not yet given the issues involved the con-sideration they deserve. But the VDMA Technology Forum at EMO Han-nover will be proving the opposite: applied sensibly and judiciously, digitalisation can even increase sustainability. Four companies whose digital solutions are helping to make the production and use of tools more sustainable offer their insights. For Konrad Keck, Sales Manager DACH of Benz GmbH Werkzeugsys-teme in Haslach (near Offenburg), Smart Service is the key to prepar-ing services and products for Industry 4.0 (IoT-ready). For Benz, Smart Service represents an integrated service concept in which ever larger amounts of digital information (e.g. from sensors) are used for preven-tive service processing.

Energy harvesting supplies sensors with powerSometimes the devil is in the technical detail: sensors often consume additional energy. Keck points out an alternative: “With rotating tools, the energy for the sensor system is obtained from energy harvesting, basically allowing battery solutions to be dispensed with.” Energy har-

vesting users “harvest” electrical energy from sources such as am-bient temperature, vibrations or air currents to power mobile de-vices or low-power electronics. However, the most sustainable aspect of “Smart Service” is that the tools last longer due to pre-ventive maintenance intervals. In the future, when digitalisation renders products aware of their own condition, such parame-ters can be used as the basis for control loops that increase the service life of the tools. In Hano-ver, the Haslach-based company will be demonstrating how digi-talisation can affect applications in daily practice in the form of its newly developed rotating tool magazine Benz Hybrix and the LinA broaching system which is now IoT-ready.Daniel Meuris, Head of Digi-talisation and Virtualisation at the machine tool manufactur-er Klingelnberg GmbH, Hück-

eswagen, will be presenting the company’s GearEngine platform for gear production at EMO Hannover 2019. This serves as a central collection point for pro-duction data and an interface be-tween the production department and the management. The plat-form facilitates the deployment of software-based data services for Klingelnberg machine tool oper-ators.

Software tool raising tool effi-ciencyMeuris believes that tool efficien-cy is the key to sustainable ma-chining. One example is bevel gear production in which it was not previously possible to assess efficiency levels due to the spe-

cial tools involved and the lack of data. Klingelnberg’s new SmartTooling system can identify tools and fixtures for bevel gear milling machines using Data Matrix codes and manage them centrally in a database. Meuris: “The means of production are described to any required level of precision as digital twins in a central database. Production data is added to this database during and after the gear cutting.” Klingelnberg will be demonstrating how this works in practice in Hanover by showing actual operation on a machine.Dr. Raphael Rohde from the Technology Development department of the Tools and Parts business unit of Blomberg-based Phoenix Contact GmbH & Co. KG will be explaining how production can be optimised using tool data at the Technology Forum of EMO Hannover. The con-nection and automation technology manufacturer networks its injection moulding tools with the aid of RFID-based data acquisition and optical markers. “All manufacturing and production information is available at all times,” Rohde explains. “The required data is made available to employees and individual users in the form of visualisation boards or through the use of augmented reality. This helps reduce any mistakes due to incorrect interpretation and keep consequential errors to a mini-mum, thus contributing to sustainability in production.”

Measurement technology supports digital transformationThe digitalisation of industry is bringing measurement technology ever closer to and into production, as Prof. Heiko Wenzel-Schinzer, Man-aging Director and Chief Digital Officer of Wenzel Group GmbH & Co. KG in Wiesthal has observed: “We can take more and faster meas-urements with optical solutions, 5-axis measuring heads and special measuring machines, and give direct feedback to the processing ma-chines via closed control loops.” However, when measurement tech-nology moves into production, it is crucial that it more or less eliminates downtimes. The measurement technology manufacturer offers addition-al solutions which are designed to detect and correct any problems on the machines at a very early stage. This extends the service life of the production equipment and makes it more sustainable.Wenzel’s measuring machines are also designed for extremely long ser-vice lives. “We are deploying modern measuring technology that can repeatedly be modernised without the entire machine having to be re-placed,” explains the managing director. “With process monitoring, the closed control loop between the measuring technology and the process-ing machines reduces the number of rejects, as we can provide feed-back on any production problems at a very early stage.” On the Wenzel Group stand at the EMO Hannover the company will demonstrate the interaction between production and new measuring technology – from portable measuring arms through to high-speed scanning machines.

FishTube, an efficient and ecological salmon transport systemIt’s called FishTube, but it’s not a web platform dedicated to fish enthusiasts. It is also known as Salmon Cannon, but there is nothing macabre or truculent. Shoot up to 40 fish per minute, but it is not an ecological weapon (or bacteriological, in the case of battered fish) nor a video game. Instead, it is an efficient means of transport for salmon and the like, studied by a Seattle-based com-pany that - with the right dose of irony - is called WHOOSHH, with the onomatopoeic sound of the fish slipping along the walls of the tube. The problem is linked to glo-bal warming, which upset the migratory flows of salmon, her-ring, sturgeon; hence the need to quickly “move” a pack that has lost its compass in an area that is richer in water, or less warm. The solution is FishTube, a pla-stic tube capable of moving fish at a speed of 18 miles per hour, without friction and without da-mage, to places more suitable for their survival. The tubes are extre-mely mobile, can be submerged or suspended, adaptable to an enormous range of situations: for now they are used in the United States and Norway, but the Sal-mon Cannon system is in rapid diffusion.

A gangway of metal pipes to clean the banks of the river SavioA bridge made of pipes and ground to allow excavators to ford the river and clean its steep banks, otherwise impossible to reach. This is what they invented in Cesena to raze tens of meters of reeds, shrubs and small trees that invaded the bed of the river Savio in the area where the vege-table gardens of the elderly were found, then abandoned. No problem on one side, the one on the University side, given the ease of access to mechanical means; but to go to the other side, much steeper and acces-sible only through a wooden bridge, the technicians had to build a gan-gway with large metal pipes and earth resting on it, which will then be removed once the cleaning and commissioning work is finished safety.

The artistic research of Italo Antico, steel tubes that tend towards the eternal“His interventions, a sign of continuity in a space-time trajectory, appear as stainless steel tubes that, fluid and rigid at the same time, articulate the environments, imbuing them with charm and mutability”.Thus writes Gaia Dallera Ferrario to describe the artistic research of Italo Antico, born in Sardinia in 1934, always attentive to experimen-

tation with materials and lan-guages - painting, drawing for carpets, ceramics, crea-tion of jewels - and, from the sixties, focused on sculpture, on space research and envi-ronmental installations, with the themes of the line and the set of lines at the center of his works. The result of his works are the very refined constructions in steel “tubes”, geometric and

elegant shapes that vary with the light and draw ever new perspecti-ves, inserted in the environmental context (often sacred) and in constant search for new spaces. As Plato stated, “the knowledge that geometry seeks is that of the eternal.”

Octopus fishing with PVC plastic pipes, the legal regulationsHow does polyp fishing work with plastic tubes? From north to south, from Alassio to Ragusa, every summer the interventions of the maritime police follow one another to remove and seize illegal traps of hundreds of PVC pipes (those of the gutter drains), which are cut, joined with a rope and anchored without the appropriate indications: the octopuses are attracted to these improvised “houses” and end up in the pan.Great to go with an octopus and potato salad, of course, but the fish

must be caught and treated according to the regulations in force, reiterated in a recent circular by the State Un-dersecretary for agricultural, food, forestry and tourism policies, where it reads: “ To the octopus fishing acti-vities (octopus vulgaris), through the use of traps in plastic material (such as, for example, PVC), the current na-tional and EU regulations on fishing gear are applied, mutatis mutandis and / or placed on the bottom “.In other words, “the vessels authori-zed to carry out professional fishing, using tools fixed and / or placed on

the seabed, can hold and use a maximum quantity of plastic traps, to such an extent that, at any time, the the total number of these tools is not more than 250 units; the connection to a single main line is allowed, via or not secondary lines, up to a maximum of 10 plastic traps “.Instead, “in the sphere of sport / recreational fishing, the holding and use of a maximum quantity of 2 plastic traps is allowed for each boat, regardless of the number of people on board”.

Tubes can be used for multiple applications, and each of them has unique characteristics. The common feature of all uses is the need to monitor structural defects, breaks, abrasions, cracks or any other anomaly that may occur and may affect the correct functioning of the entire process. The control systems are varied, ranging from simple visual inspection to the most up-to-date and calibrated software for each specific need. Applications can be directly produced by companies, with enormous adaptability and versatility, or they can be purchased by third parties by adapting the features to their needs. A good control system has a positive influence on production, reducing losses and rejected parts to a minimum, with a reasonable cost savings. Given that the increasingly marked shift towards industry 4.0 requires, to keep pace, a software platform to support tube processing, we realize that the challenge once played exclusively on the level of productivity, added a variable that can to determine the success or the loss on the economic level and of the company performance. A factor to be taken into account. Tube Today, as always, tries to take the pulse of the situation through contributions from companies directly involved in the matter.

AEROEL BARLINE: On-line Diameter Control for Bars and Tubes.BARLINE Laser Measuring Systems are designed for the diameter control of ground bars or drawn metallic tubes. Thanks to a perfect balance between straightforward operation, reliability and advanced performance, BARLINE Systems represent the ideal solution for process automation and quality control. The BARLINE System is based on an AEROEL laser micrometer, installed at the output of the grinder or drawing bench, which measures very accurately the outside diameter of the product passing through the laser beam. The non-contact operating principle enables through-feed inspection, without having to stop or slow down the product, as its vibration and movement do not affect the gauging accuracy. Thanks to the AEROEL exclusive NO-VAR (NO-VARiation) technology it is possible to obtain in the workshop and on-line the same results that one would get in a controlled temperature metrology room. You will no longer have to be concerned about frequent re-mastering operations when the room temperature is changing, nor will you have to take into account part expansion.
