It is the efforts of our dedicated team members and hundreds of volunteers that have helped us to deliver such significant progress in a difficult environment. This is only just the beginning and we are excited to walk this journey with you as we cultivate leaders of the future at International House.

Meryl McKenzieChair, International House Foundation Ltd Board

2013 was an extraordinary year for the International House Foundation Ltd. We achieved many great things that are shared throughout this Annual Report thanks to the support of our community. Broadening our reach through social media, developing and cultivating a language of philanthropy and investing in our current residents has resulted in significant growth in our alumni engagement and opportunities for mentoring and networking for our young leaders.

Our focus for 2014 will be to build on the work that was achieved in 2013 and prepare for our Golden Anniversary celebrations in 2015. This means updating all 5488 of our alumni’s contact details, sharing information on our 2015 Anniversary celebrations, increasing scholarship opportunities, connecting residents with alumni for mentoring, increasing our engagement in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander space, hosting IH Reunions all over the world, capturing and sharing stories from our alumni and friends,

enhancing our facilities, offering personal and professional development opportunities for alumni and residents and connecting you with your friends around the world.

Thank you for joining us on a journey to change and impact lives every day. With your support the International House of the future will continue to create friendships for life and stories that have purpose.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF YOUNG LEADERSIn 2012, the world lost an incredible young woman Jarrah Young (1985–2012). Thanks to the generosity of many and the passion of her family ‘The Jarrah Young Scholarship Fund’ was established in 2012. The Scholarship was founded in an effort to encourage, empower and reward young leaders at International House who embody the characteristics that Jarrah lived her life by to continue to aspire to new heights. The criteria for the Scholarship is compassion towards others, engagement in College life, inclusivity of others and academic merit.

In 2013, the inaugural scholarship was awarded to Soe San Htike (PiPi) from Burma who encompassed all of the above traits that Jarrah embodied. We are proud that this scholarship reinforced the value that this young woman was making to International House and excited that in 2013 she was elected by her peers to be President of the Student Club in 2014.

This demonstrates the importance of rewarding and empowering those who continue to give so much to the culture and community at International House. We are grateful and proud that together the community has rallied to ensure that the values that Jarrah lived by each and every day are being perpetuated in her memory.

If you are interested in ensuring that The Jarrah Young Scholarship Fund continues, please contact the International House Foundation Ltd to make a contribution.Above: Soe San Htike (PiPi), The 2013

In 2013 the second Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp (IYLC) was delivered at International House.

Organised and driven by resident leaders of International House, the four day camp focused on capacity building and ensuring that high school Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are tertiary education or work ready.

In 2013 International House delivered the Home Away From Home initiative, a strategy in support of the Federal Government’s ‘Racism it Stops with Me’ campaign.

As part of the initiative, International House delivered a three phase event series including an ad, a workshop to increase inclusivity and a Peace and Understanding Lecture by Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane.

PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION

International House was built on the philanthropy of others. Founded by Bert Martin as a Rotary International Golden Anniversary Project, philanthropy played an integral part in cultivating community and a shared vision for a place for people from all around the world to come together to live and learn in harmony. Bert Martin’s ability to draw people together from far and wide guaranteed strong partnerships and ongoing relationships ensued. Fourty-nine years on and people continue to practice and be inspired by the power of philanthropy.

Ms Olly Dove (UK) — Alumnus 2013‘The Housie Class Gift 2013 was the perfect oppor-tunity for me to give back to a place that means, and will continue to mean, so much to me — International House. Philanthropy is a wonderful concept, so the idea that my gift will help future ‘Housies’ makes me really, really happy.

International House will continue to stay with me for the rest of my life. It is at International House that I made some of my best friends and learned about different cultures from around the world. I know that with every gift, small or large, it will ensure that future young people will have the opportunities that I did and I can’t wait to see their lives changed like mine was by living and learning at International House.

From Olly’s Mum — Chrissy DoveThe experience offered to my daughter through becoming a ‘Housie’ was far beyond her expecta-tions. As my daughter says, ‘It is not International House, it is International Home.’ Being a part of such a supportive community of people from all around the world enriched my daughter’s life immensely.

Being a ‘Housie’ seems to create a certain identity and a real sense of belonging; it is like having another family. For me as a parent it was a relief to see her settle so quickly, to make great friends (which look to last a lifetime) and to know that her education wasn’t just in the lecture hall, but was through living and enjoying the sport, the societies and the cultural events run at International House.

Dr Brian Hirschfeld — IH Fellow ‘International House is a place that welcomes people from different races, cultures and religions, to live, exchange, and learn to respect fundamental beliefs of societies from all over the world. As the longest serving Board member of International House from 1963-1992 I saw the philanthropic contributions of many make International House’s dreams realised. The governance and management endeavours to encourage respect, leader-ship and awareness of one’s personal rights and privileges. I shall never forget how much I learned from the endeavours, contribution of funds and dedication of other IH fellows like, Bert Martin and Sir Clem Renouf. I hope to continue their charitable intent as both a Fellow and a friend of International House.’

FELLOWS FOR A CAUSE

There are many people who help to make International House the community that it is today. In 2013 we installed five new Fellows to International House. Fellows are integral to the fabric of the Interna-tional House community. Fellows are individuals who have made a sustained, ongoing commitment to International House. Many of them continue to play an integral role in College by giving of their time, connections, wisdom and financial support. ROTARY MOVES US CLOSER TO PEACE

International House was founded as a Rotary International Golden Anniversary Project in 1955 and opened its doors to change lives in 1965. Since then Rotary International Clubs and Members in and around Brisbane have continued to shape, change and develop the fabric of International House. Since the renaming of G-Tower to the celebrated Sir Clem Renouf Tower in 2012, an injection of enthusiasm and excitement for the history of the past and possibilities of the future has been seen throughout many Rotary Clubs in Brisbane. 2013 was by far the most successful year for re-engaging Rotary Clubs.

In 2013 we received a second gift of $10,000 from the Rotary Club of Toowong to refurbish a common room which is used daily by young people to study, share a meal and learn about the intricacies of our world. This generous support helps us maintain and enhance our high standard facilities. Numerous other clubs have generously supported the refurbishment of rooms that pre-date our foundation, creating spaces that allow for living and learning whilst studying at university.

Thank you to the Rotary Clubs listed below who in 2013 supported and celebrated leaders of the future by a number of ways including attending IH events such as Soirée, Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp (IYLC), professional evenings, thank you BBQs, the Fellows Induction and other events supporting our young people, alumni and friends. They also hosted their meetings in I-House and the Ivor Cribb Room as well as invited us to speak at their meetings.
