Dr Roger Boyd

Dr Roger Boyd is the inaugural Chair of the WFMM Steering Committee. He is also the Immediate Past President of

the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA). A graduate of Sydney University’s Faculty of Medicine, he has also obtained a Masters degree in Health Planning at the University of NSW and a Masters of Business Administration from the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland.

Committed to a balanced, efficient and e�ective healthcare system, and an advocate for the engagement of clinicians in leadership and management roles, Roger has served in a variety of both public and private sector positions. He is currently the Director of Medical Workforce for Northern Sydney Local Health District in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, which provides a comprehensive range of hospital and community health services and includes the newly rebuilt Royal North Shore Hospital, a major tertiary referral and teaching hospital in Sydney.

Roger is also a member of the NSW Medical Council, the statutory authority that manages conduct, performance and health matters concerning medical practitioners in NSW. He remains a member of RACMA’s NSW State Committee, having been been a Council or Board member of RACMA from 2001 to 2012. Other past positions include being Chairman of the National Prescribing Service, an executive member of the Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges of Australia, Vice-President of the Australian Private Hospitals Association, and being an Australian Council on Healthcare Standards surveyor.

Dr Gillian Kernaghan

Dr Kernaghan was appointed the President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph’s Health Care, London on

October 4, 2010. Prior to assuming this role, she served as the Integrated Vice President of Medical Education and Medical A�airs for London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care, London (St. Joseph’s) for 5 years. In this role, she had accountability for medical a�airs, infection prevention and control, pandemic planning, ethics and academic liaison.

In 1984, Gillian joined the medical sta� of St. Joseph’s, Parkwood

Hospital and LHSC as a family physician. She took on the role of Vice President, Medical Services at Parkwood Hospital in 1993 and for all of St. Joseph’s in 1998 after restructuring. She continued part-time family practice until 2010. She completed her residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1984 upon graduation from the University of Western Ontario and was awarded her Fellowship in 2000. She is an assistant professor at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and an adjunct professor in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing at the University of Western Ontario.

Gillian has served on numerous provincial committees. Committed to education, she is a certified trainer in Crucial Conversations and Crucial Confrontations and teaches with the Physician Manager Institute of the Canadian Medical Association. May 2011, Gillian became the President of the Canadian Society of Physician Executives. She is a Board Member of CaRMS.

Professor Chris Ham

Chris Ham took up his post as Chief Executive of The King’s Fund in April 2010. He has been professor of health

policy and management at the University of Birmingham, England, since 1992. From 2000 to 2004 he was seconded to the Department of Health where he was director of the strategy unit, working with Ministers on NHS reform. Chris is the author of 20 books and numerous articles about health policy and management. Chris was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Kent in 2012.

Chris has advised the WHO and the World Bank and has served as a consultant to governments in a number of countries. He is an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and of the Royal College of General Practitioners, an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a companion of the Institute of Healthcare Management and a visiting professor at the University of Surrey. Chris was a governor and then a non-executive director of the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust between 2007 and 2010. He has also served as a governor of the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation and the Health Foundation.

In 2004 he was awarded a CBE for his services to the National Health Service.

Dr Lee Gruner

Dr Gruner has held senior positions in public and private health services In Melbourne. She is now the President of

the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators. Dr Gruner holds a long standing career as a consultant in health services and management particularly involved in organisation wide CQI, strategic planning, review of health services, organisation change, clinical governance and consumer participation mechanisms, both in Australia and overseas. She also functions as an executive coach for both individuals and teams of senior health professionals.

In the past prior to her presidency of RACMA, Lee served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators and Chair of the RACMA Education and Training Committee. Dr Gruner has often convened and presented at the Management for Clinicians Courses on behalf of RACMA. She is also a coordinating surveyor and educator for the Australian Council on Health Care Standards. Dr Gruner teaches practical clinical governance in Australia and overseas with an emphasis on simplification of principles and processes, monitoring mechanisms and critical analysis of existing systems.

Dr Peter Angood

Dr Angood has provided senior executive leadership for all sizes and types of healthcare organizations.

Currently, he is Chief Executive Officer for the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE). He was recently Chief Medical Officer for the Patient Safety Organization of GE Healthcare and also completed a 2-year engagement with the National Quality Forum (NQF) and National Priorities Partnership (NPP) as Senior Advisor for Patient Safety. Previously Dr Angood was Chief Patient Safety Officer and Vice-President for The Joint Commission where he oversaw annual development of the National Patient Safety Goals and other enterprise-wide international patient safety initiatives. Dr Angood continues to intermittently work with the World Health Organization Patient Safety initiative after helping lead early development of the WHO Collaborating Center for Patient Safety Solutions.

After initially practicing with hospitals of McGill University,

Dr Angood was subsequently recruited to surgery faculty and hospital administrative positions at University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to The Joint Commission, he was Professor of Surgery, Anesthesia, and Emergency Medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr Angood is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada), the American College of Surgeons, and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He has a history of active involvement with numerous professional societies and recently served as president for Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr Angood is author in over 160 peer-reviewed articles, policy briefs, abstracts, editorials, and book chapters. His research interests have addressed leading-edge clinical care problems, patient safety, injury prevention, benchmarking, outcomes management, resource utilization, health services, medical education, advanced medical and telemedicine technologies, and the utility of simulation technology.

Professor Jenny Simpson

Jenny Simpson graduated from Manchester Medical School in 1976, pursuing a career in paediatrics in

Manchester and subsequently in Sheffield. As part of her training Jenny gained an MBA with Distinction followed by a Doctorate in Business Administration. She then went on to identify a core group of doctors enthusiastic and committed to the idea of a serious approach to management and leadership education for doctors, whilst still working clinically in Sheffield. This core group formed the beginning of the British Association of Medical Managers (BAMM). In February 2000 Jenny became a member of the Government’s Modernisation Board, as one of a small group of clinicians working with the PM and the then Secretary of State, Alan Milburn.

Jenny was one of the original signatories to the NHS plan in July of that year. Since then she has advised successive Governments in both the UK and overseas on clinical leadership strategy. In 2007 Jenny was requested by Ministers to lead ‘Tackling Concerns Locally’ for Department of Health, implementing the White Paper: “Trust, Assurance and Safety”.

Jenny contributed to the drafting of the Regulation for Medical Revalidation and Responsible Officers and was commissioned

to write the DH Guidance for responsible officers, the competency framework for responsible officers and the training plan. Jenny currently works with the Department of Health and NHS Commissioning Board in the UK, as part of the NHS Revalidation Support Team, driving forward the radical changes to medical regulation as part of a system-wide approach to improving the quality of care and patient safety. As well Jenny is Chairman of the European Alliance of Medical Managers (EAMM).

Professor Paul Mohapel

Paul Mohapel wears many hats - he is a consultant, lecturer, educator, researcher, and a facilitator. He has a PhD in

psychology from the University of Victoria and has worked as a neuroscience researcher for several years at Lund University hospital in Sweden, before returning back to Canada to pursue a Master’s degree in leadership and training from Royal Roads University.

Today, Paul uses his extensive knowledge of the brain, psychology and leadership to design and facilitate workshops in organizational development, and to lecture at several universities in leadership, business, and psychology programs. He consults with organizations in individual and organizational emotional intelligence enhancement, leadership development, talent management and team effectiveness. Paul also conducts research into physician leadership, and during his career has published over thirty peer-reviewed articles and four book chapters in highly acclaimed medical publications. He has been invited as a guest speaker to over twenty international medical conferences. Paul is also an aspiring author, currently writing his first book.

Dr FUNG Hong

Dr FUNG Hong is the Cluster Chief Executive of the New Territories East Cluster at the Hospital Authority

as well as the Hospital Chief Executive of the Prince of Wales Hospital, the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Prior his current appointment, he was Director (Professional Services & Planning) at the Hospital Authority Head Office. He had been responsible for the planning and development of the public

hospital services and facilities for over a decade. Dr Fung had also led the development of clinical information systems and electronic patient records in the Hospital Authority. He was the chairman of the Clinical Informatics Program Steering Group from 1996 to 2008.

Dr Fung is the Chief Censor of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine since 2010. He had served as the Council member and Program Director for Administrative Medicine for the College from 2001 to 2009. He was also the Director of Development of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong from 2005 to 2010. Dr Fung is Honorary Professor of the Department of Medicine & Therapeutics and School of Public Health at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He teaches healthcare management at both the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong.

Professor Graham Dickson

Graham is the former director for the Centre for Health Leadership and Research at Royal Roads University.

He was also formerly director of the School of Leadership Studies, where he provided guidance and support for graduate degree programs, executive development programs as well as graduate certificate programs in the School of Leadership Studies. He is currently recognized as Professor Emeritus at RRU. During his time at RRU Graham was the Principal Investigator for the cross- Canada studies that created the LEADS in a Caring Environment capabilities framework, and currently working with a National LEADS Collaborative to support the implementation of LEADS initiatives.

In addition to authoring numerous articles and leadership development books, Graham presents at conferences across Canada and internationally on leadership, teams, succession planning, learning organizations and systems thinking. Graham has a doctorate in educational administration, with a special focus on program evaluation and organizational performance measurement. He was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of the Capital Health Region in Victoria (prior to becoming Vancouver Island Health Authority), and the Greater Victoria Hospitals Foundation. He is currently a member of the Canadian Academy of Physician

rehabilitation settings. Gaétan is a Past-President of the Canadian Society of Physician Executives and a Fellow of the Canadian College of Health Leaders. Gaétan has served on the mission staff for seven consecutive Paralympic Games and will be Chef de Mission for the Canadian Paralympic Team at the 2012 London Paralympic Games. He is also Director of Administration on the Canadian Paralympic Committee Board of Directors.

Dr Peter Kuling

Peter Kuling is an assistant professor of family medicine with the University of Ottawa and lead physician with the

Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team, which focuses on the training of family physicians. He has lectured in family medicine and Continuous Quality Improvement at the University of Fukui, Fukui City, Japan. He is a faculty member of the Physician Management Institute (PMI) of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and teaches leadership courses in Strategic Thinking, Strategic Influence and Negotiation and Conflict.

Peter has acquired extensive experience in the political environment, having been president of the Saskatchewan Medical Association and having served an extended term as chair of the CMA Political Action Committee. In the latter role, he championed a grassroots lobby strategy for the CMA called the MD-MP Contact Program, which has been effective in influencing public policy on health care. He also led the CMA Tobacco Steering Committee in its successful campaign to obtain a federal law banning tobacco advertising at sporting events.

Peter has recently been awarded the designation of Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) by the CMA and the Canadian Society of Physician Executives and will complete the Advanced Health Leadership Program at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto in 2012.

Dr Zeev Aharonson

Dr Aharonson is a Specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and a Specialist in Medical Management,

licensed by the Israeli Health Ministry and is currently the Chairman of Israel Society of Medical Management. He is an advisor to Peres Academic Center in Medical Management; was a Member of the stirring of the Israel Management Center (IMC); and was an Adjunct Professor at Tel Aviv University in Medical Management up to 2008.

Dr Aharonson recently completed 23 years as the Medical Director of Meuhedet (United) health fund in Israel. Meuhedet is an HMO with over 1,000,000 members that delivers medical services according to the Israeli Health Insurance Act. Since 1997 Dr Aharonson has been a member of the “Health Basket Committee”, appointed by the Health Minister. The Committee determines the priorities of new drugs and technologies to be included in the health basket under the “Health insurance law” Dr Aharonson is an Expert in Disaster medicine and multiple injured events and until 2010 a Member of the Advisory Committee to Israel’s Ministry of Health, Emergency Department.

Dr Gaétan Tardif

Dr Gaétan Tardif is an academic physiatrist and health care executive with leadership experience in

hospital and professional organizations. He is Medical Program Director - Rehabilitation & Post-Acute Care at the University Health Network and a Professor in the Department of Medicine and Director, Division of Physiatry, at the University of Toronto.

He completed his medical degree at l’Université Laval and holds diplomas in Sports Medicine and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. His current research interests are in the area of communication and patient engagement to enhance safety in

Assistants’ Certification Council, and Research Advisor to the Canadian Health Leadership Network. Dr Dickson has made a life of analyzing leadership and how it affects positive and negative change in any organization. He is currently working with health organizations across Canada who are using LEADS for leadership development and succession planning.

Dr Carlo Favaretti

Dr Favaretti is the President of the Italian Society of Health Technology Assessment (SIHTA). He has previously

held the position of CEO, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Santa Maria della Misericordia, Udine, (University Hospital Trust of Udine); CEO, Azienda Provinciale per i Servizi Sanitari, Provincia Autonoma di Trento (Health Care Service Trust, Autonomous Province of Trento); CEO, Local Health Unit 19, Veneto Region; Medical Director, Hospital and University Medical Centre, Padova and Head, Environmental and Occupational Health Branch, Local Health Unit 9, Veneto Region.

Dr Favaretti is an Honorary Senior Lecturer of Health Technology Assessment, Post-graduate Schools of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine, University of Udine. Dr Favaretti is the National Co-ordinator of WHO initiative for Health Promoting Hospitals, President of the Italian Society of Health Technology Assessment and Co-ordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Medical Managers and Member of the Board of the Italian Federation of Public Health and Healthcare Organization. Over the last years his scientific production focused on health promotion, health technology assessment and continuous quality improvement.

Dr Karen Owen

Dr Karen Owen is the Chief Executive of The Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators.

She was appointed to this role in 2006 after earlier senior executive roles in public and private sector health services and education. Karen’s areas of work interest include organisational change and decision forming, training, quality and safety improvement. Among her achievements Karen recalls “Employer of Choice” status awards, organisation accreditation in health and tertiary education organisations. In 2006 Karen completed her doctoral studies using the concept of sense making to explore the challenges of managing inter-organisational relationships. Her background in education underpins her use of a learning approach to managing ‘deep’ and sustainable change in organisations.

Dr Sarath Samarage

Dr Sarath Samarage is a Past President of the College of Medical Administrators of Sri Lanka. He is

currently serving as a National Consultant at the World Health Organization Country Office, Sri Lanka. He is a Consultant Community Physician, and held the posts of Director Organization Development and Deputy Director General of Health Services(Planning) in the Ministry of Health prior to his retirement in 2010 after serving 32 years in different parts of the country. He is a Senior Fellow of the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo and has served in the Boards of Study in Community Medicine and Medical Administration. He was recently conferred with the fellowships of the College of Community Physicians and the College of Medical Administrators of Sri Lanka for his outstanding contributions to the fields of Community Medicine and Medical Administration. Dr Samarage’s research interests are in the areas of Health Systems Development, Primary Health Care, Human Resources Development, Health Policy & Planning.
