Introduction
www.backoftheenvelope.britishcouncil.org www.britishfashioncouncil.com/internationalfashionshowcase
The International Fashion Showcase is a festival of emerging designer talent which launched in London with great excitement in 2012. We thought of it as a young fashion parallel to the Olympics – an event with a competitive angle, but which, equally importantly is an opportunity for creative talents to travel, collaborate, learn, gain experience and make new relationships on an international platform – all the incredibly valuable side-benefits which help pave the way to successful careers. The way it works is that the British Council, in conjunction with the British Fashion Council invites the countries of the world, via their embassies, to bring their brightest talents to exhibit their clothes in a way which reflects the character and creativity of their nations. Thus, in these few weeks visitors will be able to make a ‘round the world’ trip just by visiting the installations in the many embassies and galleries around London.
This event is timed to coincide with London Fashion Week, meaning that the International Fashion Showcase will be seen by the hordes of journalists, bloggers and retailers who flock to the city. Uniquely, however, the shows offer a collective welcome to everyone with an interest in fashion, whether professional or not. London has developed its reputation as a supporter of the future of fashion by being open to ideas and innovation from everywhere – as a city we are multicultural, our art colleges are a magnet for international students and we are always thrilled to be able to get the first glimpse of the new. With all that in mind, we are more than delighted to offer the world’s visitors an open pass to the International Fashion Showcase 2013

London: Converging Talent London as a fashion design capital does not try to imitate Paris, New York, or Milan – it is unapologetically itself. It is a melting pot of highly skilled international talent both on and off the catwalk; a place to take risks and experiment. Fashion in London is both a high art form and a commercial success story as well a space where men's and women’s wear rub shoulders with millinery and accessories. The British wax lyrical about fashion. We style it, we photograph and we film it. We sell it in pioneering boutiques and exhibit it in world class museums. The UK is also home to some of the most innovative art, fashion and design research institutes in the world.
London is the capital of emerging fashion talent and the International Fashion Showcase further extends the boundaries of Fashion Week by inviting designers from across the globe to showcase their talents to the public. The Showcase develops new audiences and markets for these designers; it extends the focus on fashion beyond the traditional hotspots, highlighting equally fertile new grounds.
In doing so, the International Fashion Showcase reinforces the UK's status as a creative international hub; connecting everywhere, reflecting both itself and the world.

During London Fashion Week an award for the best exhibition at the International Fashion Showcase will be presented to one of the participating foreign embassies or national cultural institutes. In 2012 the award was presented to the Korean Cultural Centre for their exhibition, A New Space Around the Body, which featured the innovative work of eight South Korean fashion designers.
The award will be selected by a panel of experts, representative of both the business and cultural spheres of the fashion industry. Sarah Mower MBE, BFC Ambassador for Emerging Talent, willchair the advisory panel, which includes;
Julian Roberts, British Council
Anna Orsini, British Fashion Council
Tamsin Blanchard, Telegraph
Oriole Cullen, Victoria and Albert Museum
Hywel Davies, Central Saint Martins / fashion writer
Maria Lemos, Rainbowwave
Mandi Lennard, Mandi’s Basement
Penny Martin, The Gentlewoman
Tristan Webber, Royal College of Art
The Emerging Talent Award 2013 will be presented in a ceremony at the British Fashion Council’s Showspace, Somerset House on 17 February 2013. The winning project will be presented with a sculpture created by former NEWGEN recipient, jeweller Dominic Jones.
www.dominicjonesjewellery.com Fashion: A Common Thread
The International Fashion Showcase provides a snapshot of some of the most innovative and exciting young designers from around the world. It is a chance to celebrate our common ground and develop links and practices, to highlight our differences and learn from each other. It is through the simple, everyday processes of dressing and defining fashion that understanding between cultures can be promoted at the most straightforward human level.
The term fashion suggests something of the instant; something ephemeral, reflective of a passing moment in time. But fashion is more than that. Fashion is also a language that can reveal a great deal about where cultures have been and where they are going; it expresses attitudes, emotions and histories, both personal and universal. Clothes can shape economies, while at the same time providing a visible identity for those who
design and wear them. Fashion is a great storyteller; highlighting both the differences between cultures and the common threads of weaves, fabrics and techniques that transcend geography.
Fashion exhibitions draw out these stories, they urge us to consider fashion in the context of culture. They give fashion a deserved equivalence with traditionally more revered disciplines such as painting and sculpture; paying respect to the design process, the designers, the makers and the wearers. The rise and success of fashion exhibitions in major art institutions around the world reveals society’s growing interest in the industry. The development of fashion exhibitions and curation are an important endeavour, augmenting our understanding of the stories behind what we wear and why we wear it.

Lush tropical rainforests, stunning waterfalls, sweeping plains, unspoilt coastline and great rivers – all presided over by the high peaks of the Andes. Argentina is a vast country with a multitude of diverse natural treasures. By contrast, its capital Buenos Aires is a thriving, cosmopolitan city – a magnet for migration – influenced by and creating international trends and movements. The cultures that inspire Argentina’s designers are as diverse as the environments in which the country’s flora and fauna flourish. This exhibition, curated by Miranda Castro and designed by Sylvia Libedinsky, will present the work of nine designers from different regions in the country, echoing the awesome breadth of the landscape’s natural beauty. Graphic design for the exhibition is by Baauhs.

This exhibition aims to present the lack of a ‘third dimension’, in order to show the state of society – seemingly paralysed – in post-conflict Bosnia and Herzegovina. This two-dimensional statement will illustrate the perceived lack of this ‘third dimension’, or depth, in a society that is caught in a transitional and troubled state. Amid the impossibility of progress, the complex
political situation and post-war stagnation, young artists have created an artificial reality where they have the power to change this course of events… at least in this exhibition. MODIKO started as – and still is – a creative resistance.

For the International Fashion Showcase Eve-Marie Kuijstermans curates a capsule presentation based on the earlier High Fashion Low Countries exhibition shown in Brussels which she curated with Javier Barcala. This exhibition examined the balance between sustainability and style in the practice of six designers from the Lowlands . It now serves as a snapshot of how relevant entities and cutting-
edge designers from the lowlands are taking note of changing times. It marks the realisation that cultural entities, not just businesses, need to think broadly and imaginatively to ensure their continuing excellence and long-term sustainability.

Precise and refined. Resplendent. Decadent. Subtle and minimalist or eccentric and cutting-edge… Just a few ways of describing Romanian fashion in 2013. Nevertheless, the designers brought together in The Rest Is Tomorrow prove it is easier to say what it is not than to describe what it is. They belong to different generations and have different aesthetic agendas and concerns, but are united in reviving and reimagining the creative potential of Romanian design, textiles and decorative arts. Their six
brands have established individual identities, yet together, they open the way to a new philosophy, a neo-traditional outlook.

In the face of challenging social circumstances, Serbian fashion has become a rebellious force, driven by the personal visions of the gifted artists whose creativity makes L´Impossible possible. Through the concept of Fashion Vignettes, Belgrade Fashion Week will showcase three visionary designers; Ana Ljubinković, Ivana Pilja and George Styler, whose original designs are to be incorporated into a unique aesthetic framework created by illustrator Vesna Pesic. Inspired by Serbian Surrealism of the 1920’s
and the notion art and design as personal expression, these collections themselves embody the Serbian spirit. The exhibition is to be accompanied by a special edition of FAAR magazine.

Sweeping across the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the country which gave to the world the steel pan, calypso and the best carnival on Earth, is a new wave of young designers. Three talented designers will be showcasing their innovative designs: Darcel de Vlugt with a sophisticated world vision way beyond her years, Lisa See Tai expressing a fresh, sexy and young approach to life and Mark Eastman mixing it up with island fun and urban cool chic.
It's a showcase capturing the vibrancy and authenticity of a Caribbean vibe never seen before. If you are expecting pareos and t-shirts… re-think. Trinidad and Tobago are much more
than just sea, sand and waves.

The Dome Room of the former Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design will become a re-creation of the exquisite Plaza de Garzón in the tiny, semi-ghost town in Uruguay with which the label is eponymous. Alongside the debut AW13 collection is a screening of the atmospheric short film 'La Sombra', which was shot in Garzón. Combining themes of shadow, gauchos and horses, the film transports the viewer to W. H. Hudson’s Purple Land where the label was born. Garzon’s handmade pieces are hand-dyed in a palette inspired by the Uruguayan countryside – the dusty pink
unpaved caminos and old brick red estancias. Combining day and eveningwear, Garzón changes the usual concept of knitwear from casual to something with more drama and flair.

Considered the next ‘rising dragon’ of Asia, Vietnam can now afford to make unquestioned sartorial choices. As one of the country’s inaugural fashion designers, Cong Tri represents not only these new directions in consumption but also the country’s kinship with traditional dress.
Inspired by the natural environment and driven by his unique relationship to Ao Dai, the national costume of Vietnam, Tri combines techniques ranging from the traditional to the cutting edge. Utilising Vietnam’s vast market of highly skilled craftspeople, Tri is forging a new fashion identity.
Curated by Gemma Williams, this exhibition investigates if an emerging fashion system can be distilled from the consciousness of a single designer.
