GLOBAL MIGRATION TRENDS

International migration touches on a multiplicity of economic, social and security aspects affecting our daily lives in an

increasingly interconnected world. Migration is a term that encompasses a wide variety of movements and situations

that involve people of all walks of life and backgrounds. More than ever before, migration touches

all states and people in an era of deepening globalization. Migration is intertwined with

geopolitics, trade and cultural exchange, and provides opportunities for states, businesses and

communities to benefit enormously. Migration has helped improve people’s lives in both origin

and destination countries and has offered opportunities for millions of people worldwide to

forge safe and meaningful lives abroad.

According to the UN, the estimated number of international migrants worldwide increased over

seventeen years between 2000 -2017, reaching 258 million in 2017. This figure is up from 248

million in 2015, 220 million in 2010, 191 million in 2005 and 173 million in 2000 (United Nations

Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), 2017). During the period of 2000-2017,

the international migrant stock grew by an average of 2.3 per cent. People are migrating more

towards high Income countries .Work is the major reason that people migrate internationally, and

migrant workers constitute a large majority of the world’s international migrants, with most living

in high-income countries and many engaged in the service sector.

India is a major country of origin and transit, as well as a popular destination, for workers across international borders. As per report

of ILO 2018, there are over 30 million Indians overseas, with over 9 million of the Indian diaspora concentrated in the GCC region (now

known as the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf). Over 90% of Indian workers, most of whom are semi-skilled and

unskilled workers, work in the Gulf region and South-East Asia.

According to the MHRD, Govt. of India in year 2017-18, 7.83 lacs Indian Students has gone to over 100 different countries for job. they

have proposed the increase in number by the year 2020. Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, there are an estimated 5.53 lacs

Indian students studying in 86 different countries. USA, Canada & Australia account for 2/3rd of this number.

In the year 2017, 52,116 Indian students have moved to Europe. As per the chart a total of 4.5 lacs Indian students moved abroad for

education to 3 continents including North America, Europe and Australia with North American Continent as the leading place.

Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India is providing Pre-Departure Orientation & Training (PDOT) as an integral part of the

Government’s sustained efforts to ensure the protection of Indian migrant workers abroad. Pre-departure training will be conducted

in the frame work of cultural awareness, language training and travel procedure for the host countries.

PUNJAB YOUTH OVERSEAS MIGRATION TRENDS : • Total Population of Punjab -3 Crores

• Working Age Population (15-59) -64% -1.92 Crores

• Among approx.4 Lakh youth that goes abroad for education from India last year

around 90,000 youth were from Punjab.

• Main purpose of immigration is Education and Employment.

• Main Destination for Migration of Punjabi Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK,

USA

• Only 1,818 immigration agents registered in Punjab

• Total funds Going Abroad from Punjab - Rs. 67,000 Cr.

• Total Inward remittance to Punjab - Rs. 90,000 Cr.

• Net Gain to Punjab State from immigration - Rs. 23,000 Crores

Immigration Fraud Every Year in Punjab -900 cheating and fraud cases were registered

against travel agents in Punjab between January 1, 2017, and March 15, 2018, with 137

cases (15 per cent) reported in Mohali. (According to the data released by the Punjab

Police on social networking service twitter).

As per Punjab state Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi Punjab lose

at least Rs. 20,000 crore due to emigration fraud in 2018.
