Message from: District Governor Irwin Siegelwax

Momentum is Building

We are off to an awesome start for 2017. In January, we had our Mid-Winter Convention, with inspiring presentations by International Director Sam Lindsey, where we elected our future leaders.

Lion Don Eggert, of the Shallotte Lions Club, was elected District Governor Elect. Lion Rahim (Ray) Shomari, of the Jacksonville New River Lions Club, was elected 1st Vice District Governor Elect. Lion David Cox, of the Lumberton Lions Club was elected 2nd Vice District Governor Elect.

However, we still have a lot to accomplish before June 30th.

On January 19th we started a UNC Pembroke Campus Club with 28 students and 2 transfer students. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the efforts of Lions Ray Shomari (whose twin sons Shakir and Amir are students and officers of the new Club), Lion Albert (Pete) Locklear (whose daughter Sarah attends the school and is a officer of the new Club as well) and last but not least is Lion David Cox, who is also the Guiding Lion for the new Club. After a meeting held in late January, a new Leo Club in New Bern will be chartered soon. In March, we have PDG Lion Buck Larsen, a New Club Consultant from LCI, via Northern California, coming in to help us get a club going in Pamlico County. I expect the Western Carteret Branch Club, which is up to 16 members, will be chartered soon. Last but not least, we may have as many as 3 new Leo Clubs, not counting the one mentioned above in New Bern, before June 30th.

Thank you to the Charlton Lions Club from Charlton City. Massachusetts who sent in $1,000 to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew. These funds will be used to help the needy in Robeson County.

Our second membership contest is underway. Remember the period is from January 1st thru June 30

th.

The Club, with the most new members, will receive the Lion James Kiser Membership Award, at the Awards and Installation Banquet in July, along with the Lion Andrew Williams Sponsorship Award for the Lion who sponsors the most new members for the year.

The first half results were: Third Place - Washington Evening, started with 6 members and added 5 Lions Second Place - Southport - added 7 Lions First Place - Beaufort - added 13 Lions

Our International President, Chancellor Bob Corlew, has rolled out LCIForward (our 5 year plan). By 2021, the plan is to serve 200 million people each year! To help us get there, in addition to the 4 service areas of Youth, Hunger, Vision and the Environment, Diabetes has been added to help us reach this goal.

We started last year to help those with Diabetes in our District, by promoting the Strides Walk/Diabetes Screening in our Communities.

Our goal this year is 100% participation by each Club in either a Strides Walk and/or Diabetes Screening. There is no reason for any Club not to participate. You can always pick up a phone, make a call and get a Diabetes screening set up in your Community. We need an identity! What better way than to support Diabetes. Remember, there are more deaths annually from Diabetes than AIDS and Breast Cancer combined!

I realize some Clubs have had to defer their events until the Spring, due to Hurricane Matthew. Please send me a brief email and let me know if your Club has participated so far in a Strides Event and/or a Diabetes Screening.

Keep up the great work you are doing! Remember that we in District 31N know that the N means, not second to any other District!

Youth Exchange Needs Host Families for our Centennial

As part of the Centennial Celebration – we will be inviting 4 males and 4 females to be part of a Youth Exchange with us in North Carolina.

They are asking us for families that would like to volunteer to be Host Families during July 8 thru July 22, 2017. During the 2 weeks they would be with you, it is anticipated that they would be treated the same as your family, If you go on vacation would be taken with you.

They would have the individual you host fly into the airport closest to you. After the 2 weeks, they would spend the next two weeks from July 22 thru August 4, 2017 being reunited and going around the State with the Committee Chairs, Larry and Paulette Gasperson. .

If you are interested, there is an application for Host families that needs to be filled out and returned to Committee Chairs:

Centennial Commitment What has your Lion’s Club committed to do for the Centennial Celebration? I know what a few Lions Clubs are doing, but there should be much more that we are doing to celebrate the 100 years of Lionism in the world. I believe that we can do much more.

Here are some things that you can celebrate the 100 years of Lionism and service to mankind. One of the most important and lasting thing that you can do is to get a new member into your club and keep that member involved and challenged and you will have a lasting commitment to Lionism. You as an individual will be rewards for doing this for your club.

A second thing that you can do is a new Lions Club or Leo Club. Yes, there has been a Leo Club formed in the District N, but many more teenagers need to be introduced to the service to others. A new Lions Club is about to be formed, but what area in your place of the District needs some people to care for their community. A new Lions Club would celebrate service to their community and the world. Your club will be recognized for doing this

To celebrate Lionism and the 100 years of service to mankind and one of the lasting projects that you can do is a Legacy project for your community. More Lions Clubs are not doing much in this area of the Centennial Celebration, if they are I have not been informed. I know that some are working on helping the homeless and helping the Senior citizens, but I need to know what you are doing. If you do not know what a Legacy project is, I am going to give you just a taste of what it can be. It should be a project that will last for some time. The areas that are of importance are for your project should center on youth, environment, hunger and vision.

If you would like to know more than I have shared in the article, you can invite me to your club or Zone meeting and you can go on the web to MYLCI and gain more information. You can reach me by telephone at 252-320-3592 or by e-mail at [email protected] . I would like to know what you are committed to do to celebrate the 100 years of service to the world, please let me know at the above e-mail. Look forward to visiting you or hearing from you. Message from DGE Don Eggert

5

Thanks for vote of confidence in electing me your district governor

for the next club year. I’m excited and looking forward to the

challenge of leading District 31-N into the 2nd century of Lionism.

You have elected a wonderful team of leaders. Lion Shomari as 1st

VDG & Lion David Cox as 2nd VDG. They are both very enthusiastic

about the opportunities ahead of us.

I want to touch an a few things:

LCI Forward LCI Forward is an exciting new initiative being rolled out

at the international Convention in Chicago this summer. The goal

of LCI Forward is to triple our impact worldwide by improving the

lives of at least 200 million per year by 2020-21 through expanded humanitarian service. Watch

for more details.

Leader Dog for the Blind (LDFB) Update-I am happy to report that Dist. “N” leads the way in

North Carolina with $3869 contributed to LDFG this club year from 16 clubs. Southport Lions leads

the district with $500 given.

Eyeglass recycling. NC Lions (NCL) changed the guidelines for eyeglass recycling a couple

years ago. I still run into clubs that are not aware of the new rules. One important change is that

NCL) does not take the cases as there is no market for them. Also, unless you’ve got stock in UPS

or FedEx, do not ship the glasses to Camp Dogwood (CD), but rather get them to someone who

will be eventually going to the camp. I will be happy to get your box to CD as I make frequent

trips to the camp. If you need the guidelines, email me at the address below and I’ll be happy

to send them to you.

Legacy Project Connect with your community and build your Lion legacy by planning a

Centennial Community Legacy Project during our Centennial Celebration. Legacy Projects are

visible gifts to your community that commemorate our Centennial and create a legacy of your

service contributions.

Your Legacy Project will serve as a reminder of just how important your club is to the community

during the Centennial and beyond. All Lions clubs around the world are encouraged to

complete a Legacy Project by June 30, 2018, so start planning yours today! I would like to see

each club in the district compete a legacy project. Watch for more details.

Message from Brighter Visions Co-Chair, 1st VDGE Ray Shomari

Greetings Fellow Lions!

Once again we have had another successful Mid-Winter Conference in the Pirate Nation of Greenville and the home of East Carolina University. As always it was an honor to meet such distinguished Lions again from our lovely state and International Director Sam Lindsey. Recognition was given to Lions who served 50 years and more even newly installed members. Our Friday Fun Night was a total blast!, not so much for me my feet just wouldn't move on the dance floor after all, this is the Tar Heel State.

We would like to welcome Lion David Cox from The Lumberton Lions Club to our team. Lion David Cox is our new 2nd Vice District Governor Elect.

Fellow Lions we are moving in the right direction overall, membership retention is one of our prime focuses. Our latest statistics indicates in our

district we are -7 and + 3 members, 4 new members were added and 14 members were dropped from their club roster.

It is very important for club Presidents and Zone Chairs to intervene in matters. Presenting the entire format to the members is of great importance. Stressing to members to serve on one of the Administrative Committees or Activities Committees will give them some responsibility while adding strength and confidence.

If by chance a member decides they are not able to serve consistently, offer other methods to retain them on the roster as a member. First choice should be as an Affiliate member .By, definition an individual who is currently unable to fully participate in the club, but wishes to support the club. Affiliate members pay dues and may vote on club matters, but not hold office or represent the club at district, multiple district or international conventions.

Secretary Monthly reports are key to understanding how healthy our district is.

In the very near future, UNC Pembroke Campus Club will be chartered which will add growth and hopefully future leaders in Lionism. We are hoping adding Campus Clubs will go viral throughout the state. District Governor Irwin Siegelwax has invited all to attend a valuable workshop at the Woodman Community Center on Sunday March 19, 2017 at 2pm. the address to the event is 2602 W. Vernon Avenue Kinston , N.C.

Our featured guest will be Lions Club International Consultant PDG Lion Buck Larsen. The Workshop will cover areas such as membership retention, recruiting friends and proper canvassing our communities for new prospected members.

On Monday March 20 district Governor Irwin Siegelwax and a delegated team from District 31-N along with New Club Consultant Buck Larsen will meet in Pamlico County. They will meet with county, town leaders, area businessmen and local citizens. The primary objective is to establish a Lions Club in their area. This club, once chartered will be the only club in Pamlico County.

This venture would allow area residents to benefit from membership and provide much needed resources for that general area.

Lastly, please continue selling your Camp Dogwood tickets and contributing to Brighter Visions. Lets have fun helping others !

Making a Difference – One STEP at a Time

By Lion Ginny Barney

Sight is the underpinning focus for much of what the Lions do - Lions International, regional and local clubs work to prevent blindness and offer early intervention opportunities to protect the precious gift of sight. Toward this end our local club completed screenings for 4671 children and 28 adults this past calendar year, and made referrals for 448 children and 16 adults. This is the foundation component of the screening process the balance of the process requires follow through on the referral and completion of any needed services. As such our efforts to date are the first step and a very “BIG” STEP, now we need to move towards helping to ensure those we serve actually are able to process the referral recommendation to the next level.

Data suggests as many as 60% of those referred for further eye care will not follow up. Why not you say – well a large number of those referred may be Medicaid eligible or have Medicaid and if access involves communicating with the Department of Social Services families are often reluctant to do so. DSS has been charged with the job of investigating abuse and neglect and are known as “the people who take your kids”. While they work diligently to change this image unfortunately the “seed” of truth becomes the “whole” truth. As one family member recently told me “I don’t want them all up in my business”. Another key barrier is getting the information from the screening site to the responsible adult - ensuring the parents/guardians know about the needed follow-up eye care – we provide a piece of paper to the school and they in turn provide this to the child to bring home – do you remember when your child was in school and those notes went into the “black hole” never to be seen?? Additionally many individuals do not know how to access care that is affordable. Yet another barrier involves the marginally employed adult in need of eye care; they cannot get Medicaid, do no not have the capacity to purchase eye care insurance and do not have the means to pay for care.

The Western Harnett Lions Club has taken some initial steps to make a difference – we purchased the Spot machine, arranged for and provide onsite eye screenings at pre-schools, day cares and in the public elementary schools, coordinate services with the school nurses and many Lion members volunteer to make the screenings a reality, additionally we have the Mobile Screening Unit annually. We now are at the next turn in the road and need to work towards ensuring the “circle is closed” – identification --- referral --- service!!!!! And when/where this is done or being done we need data to support this process – facts are what others require to continue to provide funds for these critical activities.

In January we took the first step towards being able to have the funds to develop tracking systems and tighten up the referral process as well evaluating ways to ensure access to services – we have applied to Central Electric for a Round up Grant.

Whether we receive the grant or not I believe we are at a critical junction and need to work to develop systems which take us to the next step – that being helping those in need of eye care once a screening has been completed. We can use our matching funds program as a yardstick to see what components can be used with our school referrals - a call is received for care – application done with the individual by phone and a Lion submits the request for care to one of 4 providers with whom we have an arrangement for reduced rates (provider is the individuals choice), once service is done a claim is sent to the Lion making the referral, this individual submits the claim to the treasurer of the club who in turns submits the claim with our check for the matching funds – the provider is paid directly. “The circle is closed”.

We have devoted the last 3 years towards screening and identification, we now need to see are those we refer for follow up care getting the needed care, what are the barriers and what can we do to make a difference at another level??

Clayton Lions Club on January 3, 2017 hosted Wellness Ambassador for Rite Aid of Johnston County

and the City of Garner, guest speaker Iasia Burgess. Iasia loves her community that she and her family live in and she wants to educate everyone she can in Johnston County to achieve better health. When she calls patients to pick up their prescriptions, she also encourages them to get out and walk or just move for better health. Iasia along with Rite Aid sponsor so many programs, such as flu shot clinics where they will go to your office to immunize everyone there. March-June Rite Aid educates and encourages women as well as men to get their mammograms, which are free for those without insurance. Breast cancer does not only affect women over 40 but as early as 20 as well as men. Another program is called “Encouragment, Support and Rewards in which they help smokers through every step to help them quit. Summertime brings in another service where all Rite Aid associates are urged to mentor a child.

There are so many other available programs that Rite Aid offers. To find out more please visit your nearest Rite Aid.

who are helping take her groceries to the car. As with many other storm victims,

this family had no electricity for several days and lost everything in their

refrigerator. As we all know, it’s expensive to purchase groceries and this family,

like many others didn’t use the entire amount allocated because

they wanted to be sure they only purchased what they really

needed. What a testament to the people “we serve” During this

disaster as we were helping storm victims, many of them held

out items so they would be sure and not go over their

allotment. I told one of them it was OK to go over, because

some others were under, but she said “Someone else might need

it.”

Lions Jim Greene (35 years) and Harrison Smith (15 years) were honored at our last meeting by

Governor Irwin Siegelwax of service to Lionism.

We are looking forward to a wonderful 2017 in Loinism.

Southport “Charlie the Lion”

Honored by Sunder Scholarship Photo credit The Sunder Family Lion Charlie Sunder understood the Lions club motto of “We Serve.” He gave

decades of service to the Southport area. He served as the club’s foundation

treasurer for 30 years and sponsored numerous new Lions into the club!

Three years ago, Lion Charlie passed away which brought great sadness to the

Southport community and club. Through donation from the Sunder family and

the Southport Lions Club, the Charlie Sunder Memorial Scholarship was born.

To date, over $3000 in college scholarship money has been awarded to

deserving graduating seniors from South Brunswick High School. Another

Sunder Scholarship will be awarded in May 2017.

The above photo is Charlene Porter, daughter of the late Lion Charlie, who is holding a "Lion" made from one of

Charlie's old sport coats. Charlie’s granddaughter Christine made it for her mother as a gift.

Many Lions remember the tweed sport jacket well and smile warmly when they speak of him. A Lion spirit remembered

in its centennial year! Contributing authors: Lion Terry Pope and Lion Sandra Mullins

11 Tips for Social Networking Safety

At the Mid-Winter Convention, I heard Lions talking about being hacked on Facebook and receiving spam

emails from someone in the District. As Facebook and the internet is a great tool, there are people that will

do things to get your information or just cause problems with your computer. Well this is not the quick fix

but it is a reminder about what is out there and how we can protect ourselves from being hacked.

The following tips came from an article from Microsoft written by a Guest Contributor on Feb. 24, 2012.

Use caution when you click links that you receive in messages from your friends on your

social website. Treat links in messages on these sites as you would links in e-mail messages.

Know what you have posted about yourself. A common way that hackers break into financial or

other accounts is by clicking the “Forgot your password?” link on the account login page. To break

into your account, they search for the answers to your security questions, such as your birthday,

hometown, high school class, father’s middle name, on your social networking site. If the site allows,

make up your password questions, and do not draw them from material anyone could find with a

quick search.

Do not trust that a message really is from whom it says it is from whom it says it is from.

Hackers can break into accounts and send messages that look like they are from your friends, but are

not. If you suspect that, a message is fraudulent, use an alternate method to contact your friend to

find out. This includes invitations to join new social networks. To avoid giving away e-mail addresses of your friends, do not allow social networking

services to scan your email address book. When you join a new social network, you might

receive an offer to enter your e-mail address and password to find out if your contacts are on the

network. The site might use this information to send e-mail messages to everyone in your contact

list or even everyone you’ve ever sent an e-mail message to with the that e-mail address. Social

networking sites should explain that they are going to do this, but some do not.

Type the address of your social networking site directly into your browser or use your

personal bookmarks. If you click a link to your site through e-mail or another website, you might

be entering your account name and password into a fake site where your personal information could

be stolen.

Be selective about who you accept as a friend on a social network. Identity thieves might

create fake profiles in order to get information from you.

Choose your social network carefully. Evaluate the site that you plan to use and make sure you

understand the privacy policy. Find out if the site monitors content that people post. You will be

providing personal information to this website, so use the same criteria that you would to select a

site where you enter your credit card.

Assume that everything you put on a social networking site is permanent. Even if you can

delete your account, anyone on the Internet can easily print photos or text or save images and

videos to a computer.

Be careful about installing extras on your site. Many social networking sites allow you to

download third party applications that let you do more with your personal page. Criminals

sometimes use these applications to steal your personal information. To download and use third

party applications safely, take the same safety precautions that you take with any other program or

file you download from the web.

Think twice before you use social networking sites at work.

Talk to your kids about social networking.

Burgaw Lions Club

Imagine being bed ridden, forced to evacuate because of flooding and then unable to return to your home that contains water, mold, buckled floors, damaged wiring and no power. That is just one of many heartbreaking stories shared with Burgaw Lions Club member Suzanne Cooper, who is Zone 5 Chairman. Ms. Cooper took these people shopping to help replace a small portion of what they lost in the flooding after Hurricane Matthew hit the area in October.

The Burgaw Lions club helped 10 families consisting of 17 adults and 15 children affected by the flooding. Disaster relief was provided by grants from Lions Club International and money from NC Lions District 31N. The grants were used to buy water, food, clothing, blankets, cleaning supplies and medical supplies.

One man wanted only his own clean underwear, shoes, fresh fruits and vegetables. Most of the women also wanted underwear. One baby had very few clothes. Mothers who were concerned that Christmas was just two days away bought only clothes for their children. While many of the families received canned food, some did not have fresh meat to eat for weeks so that’s what they bought.

Some families, who were displaced, don’t know when they will be able to return to their homes. Some are living in travel trailers, nursing homes, and family members unaffected by the flooding. Some have lost contact with their neighbors. Many were unconcerned about their own needs and more concerned about the needs of their family members.

Ms. Cooper said the recipients were grateful for the help, but they were reluctant to have their pictures taken for this article. She received referrals from Steve Rockey, counselor at Malpass Corner Elementary School; Crystal Loesch, counselor at West Pender Middle School; local churches and individuals.

While the Burgaw Lions Club assisted with temporary help for these people, Ms. Cooper referred them to Pender County Christian Services for help in the future. Several families had never heard of Pender County Christian Services, which has resources, such as food, clothing and household items to help flood victims.

1st Annual Rockin’ Walk-A-Thon

Saturday, March 25, 2017 --- 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Woodmen Community Center Gymnasium Corporate friends of Lions: We have attached a request for corporate sponsorship for our Lions “Strides” event November 5th. We are funding scholarships for

children who attend Camp Needle in the Pines Diabetes Camp and assist people living with diabetes who are unable to obtain insulin

pumps and diabetes supplies.

There are several levels of sponsorship. We ask that you consider one of these to heighten diabetes awareness in our area. Lions are

placing an emphasis on diabetes awareness because it is the #1 leading cause of blindness today. Preventing or controlling diabetes can

also prevent blindness. We hope to raise a substantial amount of money to aid local people living with diabetes.

We are also asking people to form teams to rock and walk in our event. If your company would be interested in having a team or you

would like to share this with your employees in case any of them would like to create a team in honor or memory of a loved one or

friend who has been affected by diabetes, please see the registration dates on your letter for details.

Our only goal is to make a difference in the lives of people living with diabetes every day. Hopefully, our efforts will make at least one

life easier, longer and fuller. What an impact we can have on our community with your help. 100% of your sponsorship and contribu-

tions will go to local people living with diabetes. Thank you in advance for what you will do to make this effort a success. Please

“STRIDE” to change lives along with the Kinston Host Lions Club.

Sincerely,

Lion Sharon
