IFEES 2015 President Elect & Executive Committee Ballot

Candidates for President Elect

Alaa AshmawySociety of Engineers – UAE

United Arab EmiratesBiographyDr. Alaa K. Ashmawy is Professor of Civil Engineering and Dean of the School of Engineering at the American University in Dubai (AUD) and Chair of the UAE Engineering Deans Council. He earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University in West Lafayette (Indiana, USA), and his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with Distinction from Alexandria University (Egypt). Prior to joining AUD, he was a tenured faculty member at the University of South Florida. He also held interim appointments with the geosystems group at Georgia Tech in Atlanta (USA), the National Research Centre in Cairo (Egypt), and Universidád de las Americas in Puebla (Mexico). Alaa has been active with both IFEES and GEDC since 2007, and served on both executive boards. He is currently representing the UAE Society of Engineers on the IFEES Executive Board. He is a member of the UAE Society of Engineers, the UAE Engineering Deans Council, ASEE, ASCE, Sigma Xi, and is a Program Evaluator for ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission. He is the recipient of numerous research, teaching, and service awards at the institutional and national levels, including the Jerome Krivanek Distinguished Teacher Award at USF, the President’s Institutional Effectiveness Award at AUD, and the International Engineering Educator title (ING.PAED.IGIP) Honoris Causa by IGIP. Ashmawy’s technical expertise is in civil and geotechnical engineering, with interests in environmental geotechnics, micromechanics of granular media, and foundation design. He authored and co-authored two book chapters and more than 100 papers in his field. His research has been funded by the US National Science Foundation, the US Department of State, and the Florida Department of Transportation. He consults regularly on a broad range of projects in the USA and the UAE, and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Florida, USA.

Rationale StatementIt is a privilege to be nominated as Chair Elect of IFEES, on behalf of the UAE Society of Engineers. Through its role as a global “society of societies”, IFEES made it possible for us to connect with colleagues across geographic and cultural boundaries and forge long lasting partnerships. In addition, it allowed many of us to reflect upon our roles in supporting global-minded engineering education activities in our societies, and our views on issues such as accreditation and curriculum development in a global sense. While it is important for IFEES to continue to serve as a forum for its member societies to communicate and exchange ideas, our organization is also now well-positioned to have stronger input on regional and global policies affecting engineering education. As an active member of the UAE Society of Engineers and a founding member of the UAE Engineering Deans Council, I appreciated the role IFEES played in supporting engineering education activities at the regional level, including the membership activities of the UAE Society of Engineers. This experience can be used as a model to strengthen the role of engineering education societies in other parts of the world, and spur the formation of such societies where they do not exist. Through IFEES, we can also collectively play a key role and serve as credible voices on matters such as accreditation standards

for engineering programs and education policy. If elected, I plan to strengthen the ongoing partnerships with global organizations such as the World Bank, and initiate dialogues with new ones. In parallel, and as our organization continues to grow, it is imperative that we expand our network of corporate partners in order to provide stronger links between academia and industry, and to gain better understanding of the needs of employers in terms of skills and diversity of graduates. As I stressed out at WEEF 2014 in Dubai, education does not only happen at Colleges and Universities and must involve all stakeholders. It is through such partnerships that we can prepare a new generation of globally minded engineers equipped with the competencies needed to address current and future engineering challenges.

During the World Engineering Education Forum – WEEF2014 in Dubai Michael Auer was elected as member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES).

Rationale StatementTo begin with, let me tell you that it is a great honor and privilege for me to be considered as a candidate for the 2015 IFEES President Elect election.

As you might know, I have frequently been involved in a number of IFEES activities over the years and have also acted in several functions for IFEES, for example as the co-chair of the Award Committee, as a member of the Nomination Committee, and as a member of the IIDEA Advisory Board. I have also been contributing to the preparation of WEEF2014 and have participated in many other Engineering Education activities.

During the World Engineering Education Forum – WEEF2014 in Dubai I was elected as member of the Executive Committee of IFEES.

We are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of Engineering Education. Two essential elements of this transformation process are definitely the challenges that have to be tackled in the fields of

the impact of globalisation on all areas of human life, and the exponential acceleration of the developments in technology as well as of the global markets and the

necessity of flexibilisation arising from itwithin Engineering Education.

I can envisage IFEES as the great community that may play an active role in this transformation process. Who else, if not we as IFEES, could provide the direction and the content with which Engineering Education can help to master future challenges for society.

Over many years, I have been closely connected with many dear colleagues and friends in IFEES through our common work : Hans Hoyer, Uriel Cukierman, Lueny Morell, Krishna Vedula, Claudio Borri, Stephanie Farell, to name but a few.

Together with all IFEES members, I would like to focus my work on the following aspects: As global player, IFEES has a special responsibility for the exchange of the needs, experiences, best practices,

etc. in EE between the regions. In addition, due to the global dimension of engineering tasks we are challenged to increase the support of our colleagues in developing countries.

The requirements for EE coming from emerging technologies as for example online engineering, industry 4.0,

additive technologies, etc. have to be broadly discussed. The new and future developments in engineering and the resulting new needs for EE require a new quality in

the cooperation between all stakeholders in EE (state and private universities/colleges, industry, governmental and international organizations).

Based on the crucial role of engineering in society IFEES should struggle to enhance the prestige of the engineers and the engineering profession.

I strongly believe that it is of the utmost importance that IFEES will, in the future, listen to and learn more from its members than ever before and that best-practice experiences and innovative methods shall become a more general and universal importance. In addition, IFEES shall organise more common activities, partnerships and co-operations for its members, which would put Engineering Education into a more cross-linked global context and would also create considerable synergies.

As Darwin said: "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but rather the one most responsive to change." Let’s do this change together!

I am more than willing to initiate these changes in Engineering Education together with the members and leaders of the IFEES community, this international group of Engineering Education innovators.

had the pleasure to attend several IFEES summits and related meetings. Together with IFEES top leaders and the former President of SEFI, Dr. Anette Kol mos, I gladly contributed to the creation of the International Institute for the Development of Engineering Academics - IIDEA -, an organisation from which I still enthusiastically ensure the representation in Europe. In the letter of motivation I sent to IFEES two years ago, I had written that, "without being presumptuous, I thought that IFEES President and Secretary General were convinced of my personal support and strong dedication toward IFEES". After two years of service within the IFEES Executive Committee, I can say that my motivation remains intact and is even strengthened. I also hereby reaffirm the support of my organization, SEFI, relating to IFEES and its activities.

Furthermore, as you may know it, SEFI has recently incorporated the European Engineering Deans Council, and in the context of our deans activities, I am presently coordinating, together with my relevant SEFI colleagues, the two sessions (a plenary session and a round table) organised for deans in Florence next September in the context of WEEF 2015, in cooperation with Copi (the group of Italian deans) and with GEDC (Global Engineering Deans Council).

Through my involvement in SEFI over the last 27 years, combined with my managerial experience in other engineering organisations such as the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and the European Engineering Deans Council (EEOC), I have grappled many relevant issues that the Executive Committee of IFEES addresses. Over the last 27 years I also had the privilege to actively cooperate with international bodies and organisations such as the European University Association (EUA), UNESCO, the European Commission, the Council of Europe, and with many others more specifically active in engineering such as BEST, ASEE, IGIP, IACEE, ENAEE, KSEE, JSEE, GEDC, ASIBEI, ACOFI, LACCEI, ABET, ... and several corporate partners, many of them being now also members of IFEES.

I am therefore ready to offer IFEES my experience and strong dedication in contributing to the visibility of IFEES in general and in Europe in particular. For completeness, please find below a short biography. The necessary endorsement letters from other IFEES members will be sent to the IFEES head office by separate mail, and I hereby would like to thank those who accepted to support my candidature.

I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve IFEES on the Executive Committee, because I am committed to, and most excited about, taking part in raising engineering education at the global level.

universities receiving the foreign students are looking for credible sources to assure the quality of degrees. The increasing universal concern for advancing more sustainable development presents considerable challenges to both education and research. The kind of innovation likely to be managed successfully by industrial corporations is relevant to the differences between current and sustainable technology agendas. There is a strong need for talent development to strengthen the competiveness of companies and technology development in India. It is also essential to build research collaboration between institutions and industry to foster innovative ecosystems and strengthening entrepreneurship.

Since 1968, the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), one of the largest professional bodies in India, have been working for the development of standards of technical education in the country vis-à-vis improving quality of technical manpower continuously. Many government reports from the National Knowledge Commission, Planning Commission as well as the RUSA Initiative have suggested comprehensive reforms; however, the key obstacle is the lack of ability to implement the suggested reforms in the engineering education system. The ISTE will focus on recommendations and action points for engineering education in India to be undertaken over the next 10 years in the areas suggested by the World Bank Workshop on "Implementing Strategies for Engineering Education in India Towards 2025" (EEI 2025) held during January 2015 t Bangalore. It is also expected that the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) will be linked to IFEES and other member societies and work together to bring the benefits to the engineering fraternity in general. The presence of a representative of ISTE in the Executive Committee of IFEES would help improve the quality of the large number of faculty in engineering colleges in India to reap the benefits in a win –win situation.

Rationale StatementThe philosophy of the IFEES mission is that it gathers under its roof experts in engineering education and professional engineers from all over the world—a unique opportunity for mutual exchange of ideas and also learning from differing experiences and backgrounds. Everywhere, the improvement of human welfare is a true need and since engineering sciences contribute a great deal to this, the development of engineering education is a crucial challenge.

I would like to propose enhancing these initiatives under the umbrella of IFEES to

Gather and present examples of “Good Practice” in engineering education—especially for those with very different backgrounds and limited local facilities.

Make sure we do not suppress cultural diversity but to encourage different avenues of engineering education.

Develop specific didactical concepts for teaching and learning of student teams with growing cultural diversity.

Implement ethically based didactical concepts of “ENGINEERING Education for Sustainable Development” in the curricula of engineering studies:

This September, a new Sustainable Development Agenda will be adopted by the UN in the frame of new post-millennium-goals.

Include the aim of “saving biodiversity” in the development of engineering sciences and technologies. Increase the attractiveness of “engineering studies” for young people e.g. by increasing the visibility of the

importance of the role of engineering and technology to human welfare, including sustainable development and ethical issues.

Rohit KandakatlaStudent Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED)

IndiaBiographyRohit is currently pursuing his Masters in Embedded Systems at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. He is the Founder and CEO of FOOTSTEPS (www.footsteps.in), a social venture that works towards improving the learning and understanding of engineering for students across India. He is currently also serving as the President of Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED).

Rationale StatementMy journey in the field of Engineering Education (EE) began in 2012 with the Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED). It began with me facilitating student workshops for SPEED in India through which we used to establish EE dialogues among engineering students. In 2013, I was elected as the President of SPEED in India after which I founded the Indian Student Forum (ISF), a replica of the Global Student Forum (SPEED’s annual event) to reach out to more students. Since the collaboration with IUCEE in 2013, we have successfully reached out to more than 5000 students in India and engaged in EE discussions.

In 2013, I was also elected as the Internal Affairs Officer (IAO) of SPEED globally through which I got the opportunity to interact with SPEED members across the globe. During my tenure as the IAO, I worked with the IFEES Student Vice-President on their global student strategic thrust and developed a global student survey to collect data related to engineering education across the globe.

I got elected as the President of SPEED in December 2014. Since then I have been working towards increasing the student reach of SPEED across different continents by planning and organizing national student forums. I also founded the Global Entrepreneurship Challenge in collaboration with IFEES, ISTEC and GINET to provide a global platform for young student entrepreneurs.

In order to continue by my contribution to EE further, I would like to apply for the role IFEES VP for Student Affairs. Through this role, I plan to increase the awareness among engineering students about the field of EE and the opportunities available to take it up as a career option. I also would like to continue working on the student strategic thrust to collect data from students and determine the various areas to focus for improvement in the coming years. I plan collaborate with IFEES member organizations and establish more student centric activities locally and reach out to a wider student community.

In the view of IFEES mission, “To enhance the effectiveness of member organizations and to contribute to the improvement of engineering education around the world”, I feel the contribution of students who are the key stakeholders is very much essential. Students are critical to the success of all the work that is being done. Bringing in

Rationale StatementAfter having experienced national and international higher education, I began to honestly appreciate the tremendous necessity that Engineering Education needed and this brought to my mind the opportunity to research and study different advances in engineering education around the world.

Before thinking about how to improve education around the world, I had to think about how together we could improve education in my country, Argentina. I belief that with all of our national and international projects we, as colleagues, can change education and engineering education specifically. Additionally, education shapes young people and it makes them be better informed and able to choose appropriately in their professions. These made me focus on national and international education and the necessity to serve the needs of society, government policies, bilateral agreements, personal accomplishments, and a wide variety of other dimensions of life. The roles of IFEES are to enhance the effectiveness of member organizations and to contribute to the improvement of engineering education around the world. In order to fulfill these missions it is needed the collaboration between people and institutions in our global world. This is the reason why I would like to offer my knowledge, share any of my experiences, plus participate in the development of new and effective ways to improve engineering higher education.
