Service.A simple word filled with so many meanings and overtones. It iscertainly the watchword for AHI. It guides, empowers, motivates, anddefines. It is Christ’s method, demonstrated so many times in Scripture.

The model of service that AHI follows utilizes volunteers heavily, bothhere in the United States, and also in the field.We view this as very valu-able, both for the institutions that are helped, and for the many who volun-teer.Yet even volunteers need support, including basic health insurance,assistance with travel costs, lodging while in the field, and other unforeseencosts.This is usually our greatest financial need as we seek to provide anopportunity for the growing number of both young people and others whodesire to serve.

A large amount of time and many volunteers have been involved this pastyear with the earthquake in Haiti.While our hospital was not significantlydamaged, the earthquake flooded us with patients and provided an oppor-tunity to upgrade the physical plant and expand our services.We are grate-ful for the hundreds of health professionals who spent time in Haitiproviding incredible service under very difficult circumstances.

At the end of 2010, another natural disaster hit our little hospital in Curaçao, in the south Caribbean Sea, just an hour’sflight north of Venezuela.At the end of HurricaneTomas, which soaked the island, an earthen dam broke near our hos-pital and suddenly flooded the entire facility with three to four feet of water. Both patients and staff were evacuated safely,but the electrical equipment, which is so critical in a modern hospital, was essentially all destroyed.Our board and hospi-tal leadership quickly put together a rescue plan for obtaining new equipment, and within two months,more than $1million had been raised from numerous sources to replace most of what had been lost.

While thesemajor disasters are expected anddealtwith as bestwe can, the biggest challenges are the day-to-day crises in each ofour institutions—meager resources, late arrivals of critically ill patients, and limited equipment.This is our continual battle, aswe seek to upgrade andmaintain our current network of 26 hospitals.Certainlymajor progress has beenmade forwhichweare deeply grateful to our donors and staff.But somuchmore needs to be done in those hospitals that are already part ofAHI, and also to help us prepare for the others who are asking to join.

Adventist Health International (AHI) is a multinational, nonprofit corporation with headquarters in LomaLinda,California.AHI has been established to provide coordination, consultation,management, and technical assis-tance to hospitals and health care services operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, primarily in developingcountries.AHI is not a funding agency and depends on various organizations, foundations, governments, and indi-viduals to provide financial assistance when needed.

AHI believes that every health care institution must be firmly rooted in its community with concern for allaspects of development and will pursue policies and programs that accomplish this aim. AHI is committed to theeducation of local health care professionals and will encourage the establishment and/or retention of professionaltraining programs whenever appropriate.

Fierce weather winds and large amounts ofrain water seldom if ever visit the small,Netherlands Antilles island of Curaçao.

However, the evening of November 1, 2010,found this South Caribbean Sea island under atorrent of both. Hurricane Tomas had found itsway to Curaçao, bringing with it widespreaddestruction.

Antillean Adventist Hospital, the small, 40-bed facility, experienced sudden heavy rainfall.Seven nurses on duty at the hospital that eventfuland unforgettable night say that around 8:00p.m., rainfall became heavier and water beganbuilding up on the streets and flooding into thehospital.

According to news reports, the dam systemwhich retains water from the rainy season, broke,releasing streams of water throughout the townand directly into the hospital. This water washighly infected with heavy brown sewage anddebris of all kinds. Among the major areas hit bythe storm were Zuikertuintje (Sugar Garden) andGroot, Davelaarweg (Great Davla Street).

One nurse, sensing the weather,wanted to arrive early for the nightshift. As she drove into the area, shenoticed water building up on thestreets. Upon arriving at thehospital, she parked her car

on the sidewalk next to the hospital. Before shecould exit her vehicle, she found water was rapidlyentering her car and blocking her ability to getout. Using her cell phone, she called another nursein the hospital. She was advised not to attempt tocome into the hospital. The water was rising toofast. It was filling up the hospital corridors andpatient rooms. However, this did not discouragethe nurse; she joined a group working its way intothe hospital and assisting other nurses withevacuation of the patients.

At around 9:00 p.m. the nursescontacted Cenaida Panneflek,chief executive officer of thehospital, and alerted herthat water was flowingdown the streetsand into the hos-

pital, creating an unmanageable situation. Ms.Panneflek advised to keep calm, assist the patients,and call the fire department. She further advised thenurse to take charge of the situation by calling theisland disaster team, the ambulance service, radiostations, and the head of the hospital maintenancedepartment. Other institutions were also contactedto provide help.

When the director of maintenance arrived, thestaff gathered flashlights, sand bags, and boots. Bythis time, driven by the power of nature, the heavycurrents of water had erupted with garbage and defe-cation overflowing in many areas ofthe community and the hospital.Therushing water washed away every-thing in its path, including large treesand automobiles, and threatened thelives of patients, nurses, staff, and theneighborhood.

Huge amounts of water comingfrom the broken dam flooded aschool, a Jewish temple, a hotel, andthe Antillean Adventist Hospital—a40-bed, one-level facility, which has served the com-munity since 1970—causing indescribable damage tothe entire hospital. In its wake, the fury of natureraised water levels up to three feet and more, destroy-ing walls in patient rooms and offices, medical equip-ment (CT scan, X-ray, and anesthesia machines),beds, central IT unit, computers, important files, doc-uments, furniture, and other materials too extensive

to list. In addition, two auxillary buildings near thehospital were destroyed and left uninhabitable.

As the night drew on, water rose to a level ofthree to four feet throughout the hospital, destroy-ing the infrastructure. Electricity and telephoneservice were rendered useless.

Darkness set upon the operations of the hospi-tal and the care and safety of patients. One nursereceived an electric shock while disconnecting acomputer in waist-high water.

Nurses and other personnel tried to attend topatients with dirty, infested, putrid water wrapped

around their waists. Often thisincluded body waste filling theirboots and clothing, with an over-whelming odor that made it diffi-cult to breathe.

“We struggled to move aroundthe bedsides of patients providingcare, encouraging calm, comforting,and praying for hope and soon res-cue,” says one nurse.

Another nurse, hesitating torelive the experience, wrestled emotionally as sheshared the traumatic events of the night, by tellinghow she worked with patients in the midst ofdarkness and dirty water, praying and singingamidst flashes of lightning and claps of thunderwith falling rain.

Patients were filled with fear, calling, crying,and screaming for help.

“I was tired,” she says. “I was exhausted, want-ing to just sit down, but with nowhere to sit.There was muddy water waist high at times. Wewould stand on chairs, looking here and therewith only a shared flashlight, side by side withother nurses. We gave each other blessed assur-ances, believing, with faith and hope, for help tocome.”

Another staff nurse who was a patient hadsurgery that very day. She remembers that it wasaround 11:30 p.m., and that the level of water hadreached just under her bed. She had taken asmany pictures as she could. She then placed hercamera on her chest and waited in faith and hope,praying for help to come soon. A patient in thebed next to her began calling the names of her rel-atives. She called for her husband to get the carand take her home.

“Only God can save us now!” the patientscreamed. “Take what you can, break windows, getout!”

With only two flashlights to share amongthem, the persevering nurses labored during thenight. Finally, at the midnight hour they beganremoving the 18 patients and 1 newborn baby,

who had been born just that day. The nursesloaded the patients onto beds and wheeled themto the hospital entrance area where they werecarefully and safely evacuated into the rescuingarms of marine soldiers who then placed theminto ambulances. The patients were then rushedto St. Elizabeth Hospital. Six of the nursesaccompanied the patients to the hospital and con-tinued to care for them.

At the heart of Adventist health care ispatient care, treating the whole person—physi-cally, mentally, and spiritually. This is a story ofseven valiant, self-sacrificing nurses committed tosaving the lives of their patients in the midst of adangerous, devastating tropical storm.

Who can measure the exemplary service andsacrifice of these faithful, committed nurses, whowere thinking only of their patients and theirsafety? By God’s grace and their commitment toservice, a bond has been created between themthat will be unbreakable. The Antillean AdventistHospital’s mission to provide quality health careto those it serves by relieving suffering and sick-ness of body, mind, and spirit was exemplified bythese individuals.

Dear Dr. Hart,I have just returned from a meeting of the Board of Directors for Antillean

Adventist Hospital (AAH) in Curaçao. At this meeting, the Board voted to express greatappreciation to you and Adventist Health International (AHI) for the prayers and finan-cial support for the hospital. Thanks to God’s blessings and your support, the hospital ison the road to recovery. The first surgery and the first birth since the flood have occurredin the hospital.We have been successful in acquiring funding for the recovery, and thehospital is expected to be totally operational by March 1, 2011.

As you know, AAH was devastated on November 1, 2010, by a flood. The finan-cial loss for the hospital was US$3.8 million. Since there was no insurance coverage forthis flood, we established a recovery funding plan using donations, hospital reserves, ven-dor discounts, and loans. The goal for donations was US$1.2 million. Thanks to theefforts of AHI, we have achieved this goal. Additionally, it appears now that we will beable to keep the borrowing to a minimum.

Please pass on to the AHI administrative committee the appreciation of theAAH Board. Also, please thank them from me for their support and efforts. The promo-tion on the HOPE channel, the grant request, the guidance on equipment purchases, andmany other kinds of assistance have been instrumental in the recovery of AAH, and havedemonstrated to Board members, church leaders, church members, local business leaders,and hospital staff the great benefits of being associated with AHI.

Walt Whitman said, “when I give, I givemyself.” The year 2010 was a yearwhen the world’s economy was still

struggling. And a year of significant tragedy—theJanuary earthquake in Haiti killed more than200,000 and devastated the already fragile country,sparing no societal stratum.

The year 2011 seems no less tragic. As wewrite this report, we have just heard of the devastat-ing 8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Despite the condition of the United States andglobal economies, donors to AHI“gave themselves,”making for a record year in philanthropic contribu-tions to the organization.

One half of all contributions to AdventistHealth International were dedicated for post-earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. These giftsenabled AHI, and its many volunteers, to do whatit is supposed to do—to send people, equipment,and other resources to intervene when and wherethey are needed the most. Medical and supportpersonnel, infrastructure, and other assistancewere provided quickly within two to three days of

January 12 to Hopital Adventiste d’Haiti, helpingto make it the country’s best hospital to this day.

Donors’ generosity accomplished much in otherareas too:

• The Monsanto Fund’s $193,000 grant re-built Malamulo Hospital’s water supply system inMalawi.We recognize Monsanto for this magnifi-cent philanthropic achievement.

• Grants from Versacare enabled the first majorconference of Inter–American Division hospitalsheld at Hospital Adventista Valle de Angeles inHonduras and provided medical equipment for theAdventist Clinic in Caracas, Venezuela.

• Patient services at the flooded hospital inCuraçao were resumed following HurricaneTomas.

•The Stewardship Foundation stimulated estab-lishing health care work andChristian influence inNiger andMauritania, both predominantlyMuslimcountries.The foundation fostered this unprecedentedeffort forAHI and Loma LindaUniversity.

• Engaging in proactive fundraising, LLU med-ical student classes (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013)“adopted” hospitals in Haiti, Guyana, Belize, and

Honduras to assist them in capac-ity-building. These students’ dedi-cation portends well for thechurch’s future health care work.

• During the year, one of ourgenerous donors arranged forAHI to be the beneficiary of twogift annuities. This is the first timeAHI has received this type ofgift—a wonderful expression ofconfidence in AHI’s work aroundthe world.

With 26 hospitals in 21 countries, wecannot tell as many stories about eachinstitution as we could in the past.Yet

it seems important to provide a brief mention of eachplace God has called us to.AHI now operates in fourdivisions of the Adventist world church, three inAfrica and one in Inter-America.While there arealways challenges, progress continues on all fronts,bringing healing, church growth, and spiritual bless-ings in many countries.

INTER-AMERICAN DIVISIONThe majority of hospitals in the Inter-AmericaDivision are now members of AHI.These includeinstitutions in the countries of Haiti, Trinidad,Guyana, Venezuela, Honduras, Belize, andCuraçao. Elie Honore, MD, MPH, has been namedthe president of the IAD Health System and servesas the main liaison with AHI through his role as anAHI regional vice president. Discussions are under-way on how to best support the entire division withcommon strategies and infrastructure.

Belize—La Loma Luz Hospital in Belize hasfinally become part of AHI. Led by GrantMcPherson, La Loma Luz has been providing qual-ity clinical care to southeastern Belize for manyyears. Managed for years by Mission Projects, Inc.,the 25-bed hospital has now transitioned to AHI,with Kevin Lang, MBA, from Loma Linda as boardchair. Growth is planned in several areas. La LomaLuz was recently selected by the national govern-ment to be one of two hemodialysis centers in thecountry. Financed by the federal government, thisservice will be a valuable contribution to the countryand will establish La Loma Luz as a major healthcare institution. It is expected to dialyze its firstpatients in early 2011. La Loma Luz also hosted theLoma Linda University School of Medicine class of2012 over Christmas break its class project. Thestudents expect to return there for many years aspart of their lifelong commitment to global service.

Curaçao—At the end of 2010, a national calamityhit another of our hospitals on the little island ofCuraçao, just north of Venezuela, in the southernCaribbean.Tropical storm Tomas caught the islandwith full strength, deluging it with rain.As thestorm was ending, an earthen dam near the hospitalwas overwhelmed, causing the facility to suddenlyflood with three to four feet of water. Our heroicstaff stayed with the patients and managed to evacu-ate everyone safely. But the electronic equipmentexposed to the floods was ruined, forcing closure ofthe facility for several months. Unfortunately, theinsurance plan did not cover flood damage, so amajor concern was how to make the institutionfunctional again. Under the leadership of DonPursley, DBA, board chair, and Cenaida Panneflek,administrator, a fundraising plan was put togetherthat succeeded in raising more than $1 million injust two months to essentially replace all necessaryequipment. By March 2011, the hospital was pro-viding services again, moving quickly toward fullcapacity. Its reputation was so strong that manypatients preferred to come there even when itscapacity was still limited. Our expectations are thatwith new equipment and continued strong leader-ship, this 2010 tragedy will give us the opportunityto have an even stronger institution into the future.

Guyana—Davis Memorial Hospital continues toserve the capital city of Georgetown.With the depar-ture of JohnWilson,MD, in May,DMH has hadinsufficient medical manpower for the balance of theyear.This has been partially compensated by thearrival of Warren Creed,DDS, and his family. Dr.Creed is an orthodontist who has reactivated thedental clinic and is now working on establishingsatellite dental clinics elsewhere in the country.Alexander Isaacs continues to provide strong leader-ship in administration, and at year end it looked likeDMH would be funded by USAID to provideHIV/AIDS services to the country.This contractwould establish our hospital as a major health careprovider in the country.

Haiti—The massive earthquake of January 12,2010, is still the dominant issue in this strugglingisland nation.Minimal progress has been made oncleaning up the quake debris, and the health careinfrastructure is inadequate to care for routine needs,let alone the additional disabilities from the earth-quake.The Hopital Adventiste d’Haiti continues toplay a major health care role, particularly in orthope-dics.There are an estimated 7,000 new amputees inthe country now, so AHI has collaborated withProsthetika, CBM, and Project Hope to acquire andinstall two containers equipped to make prostheses.Many orthopedists have been providing care at ourhospital, anchored initially by Scott Nelson,MD,and nowTerry Dietrich,MD. Solid progress hasbeen made in developing an administrative systemcapable of growth and development to meet theexpected needs of the country. Emilie Clotaire,administrator, and Frantz René Jean-Baptiste, busi-ness manager, have partnered with our current AHIvolunteers,Nathan andAmy Lindsey, to establish aneffective team dealing with a myriad of issues and acontinuing stream of volunteers. Recently joining thismanagement team,Yolande Simeon,MD, a pediatri-cian, replaced Lesly Archer,MD, as medical director.Marc Julmisse serves as nurse educator.The chal-

lenges ahead are immense, including building on-campus housing for long-term volunteers, improvingthe water and sewage systems, finishing a new patientwing, and coping with the continued high volume ofpatients, particularly children.The team is workingon major departmental relocation to accommodatepediatric and maternal in-patient care more efficientlyin the existing building. Sometime soon we need tobuild a major new expansion wing, with more oper-ating theatres, a larger labor and delivery area, andexpanded orthopedic services.

Honduras—The beautiful setting of HospitalAdventista de Valle de Angeles only partially com-pensates for the many struggles this little hospitalhas had through the years. Gradually the problemsof the past are being resolved and a solid foundationis being laid for the future. Veronica Alvarado con-tinues to provide administrative leadership, whichhas now been strengthened by the addition ofGarry Gregory as business manager. A major stepforward was accomplished in October, when JasonLohr, MD, and Belen Lohr, MD, family medicinespecialists from Loma Linda who had worked in

Nigeria for five years, joined the hospital staff.Together with Raul Schneider, MD, an orthopedistfrom Argentina, they expect to expand clinical serv-ices, both at the hospital and the Tegucigalpa clinic.Two Global Service Scholarship awardees fromLoma Linda are also at HAVA—Tina Pruna ishelping in community health education programs,and Jonathan Jackson is developing the physicaltherapy department.

Trinidad—Community Hospital in Port of Spainhas seen many ups and downs during 2010.Political changes in the country have resulted incontracts being reconsidered and a delay in gov-ernment payments for patient services. RichardSpann, MD, and Marlene Spann, MD, have con-tinued to provide valuable medical leadership dur-ing these transitions. The addition of Carol Cuffyfrom Guyana as business manager has also been amajor boost to the hospital. A major buildingexpansion has had to be put on hold until theworld economic crisis improves and Trinidad’seconomy starts moving once again. The additionof Mark Sandoval, MD, in emergency medicineand Norman McNulty, MD, in neurology hasadded new specialists to Community Hospital.Both are LLU graduates and bring added potentialto Community Hospital.

Venezuela—Despite high inflation and a difficultpolitical environment, the busy city practice inCaracas and the small hospital in Barquisimeto con-tinue to provide quality health care.With limitedfunding for construction, the new hospital buildingin Barquisimeto is not yet completed, though theground floor is nearing occupancy. The clinic inCaracas is exploring a strategy to expand into inpa-tient services as a means of protecting its marketshare. Efforts are also being made to develop the sixchurch clinics scattered around the country andmake them an integral part of a national system.AHI is anxious to raise sufficient funds to completethe hospital in Barquisimeto to enable the Adventistphysicians in the city to come together in a mean-ingful practice setting.

EAST–CENTRAL AFRICA DIVISIONEthiopia—Gimbie Adventist Hospital remainsour “volunteer capital” for another year. They havebeen greatly blessed with the many young peoplewho have contributed to the various servicesoffered by the hospital, both in the town and sur-rounding countryside. Paul and Petra Howe con-tinue in leadership positions at Gimbie, assistedby Mark Squires and a host of others. A highlightof this year was the first graduation from ourSchool of Nursing, with students scoring well onthe national exams. Our hallmark of providingpractical clinical education in all our schoolsalways prepares students well for the real worldand the responsibilities they will face. The physi-cal infrastructure at Gimbie continues to improve,with the addition of a new laundry. Together withDavis Memorial Hospital in Guyana, Gimbie wasthe first member of AHI, more than 12 years ago,and has truly been a pioneer in expanding ourmission. The seven rural health clinics in WestWollega continue to be an important part of thatmission.

Rwanda—Mugonero Hospital in western Rwandaanchors AHI in this rapidly developing country.With strong national leadership by President PaulKagame, Rwanda is fast becoming one of the mostprogressive countries in Africa, with the dream ofconnecting each of its villages to the world viaInternet. Our services continue to include theRemera Polyclinique in Kigali, now expandingunder the leadership of Tommy Wuysang, MD, acardiologist from Indonesia.We are also pleased tohave Jesse Agra, DDS, and Sheila Agra join usmid-year to staff the dental clinic in Kyaciru. Thisonce again gets that facility back to full operations.Silas Gomes, MD, is a surgeon from Argentinawho is anchoring Mugonero and the rural clinicsdepending on it for guidance. Additional nationalstaff has been assigned to Mugonero, providingadequate physician coverage.We still hope toreestablish the nursing school at Mugonero whenwe can meet the advanced educational require-ments for the teachers.

SOUTHERN-AFRICA INDIAN OCEAN DIVISIONMalawi—A small country with a mighty heartdescribes Malawi. Steady progress has been made ineach AHI institution, particularly includingMalamulo and Blantyre Adventist Hospitals(BAH). Blantyre is now debt-free and investingheavily in the future. It will soon open a new eight-bed ICU under the direction of Tiffany Priester,MD, a cardiologist from the Loma Linda DMAprogram and the only practicing cardiologist in thecountry. Kirby Kasinja continues to provide solidadministrative leadership to BAH and deservescredit for quickly bringing this institution to sol-vency and growth once again. The Adventist HealthCenter–Lilongwe is undergoing leadership transi-tions, and is expected to stabilize its services soon.Malamulo Hospital is the awakening giant.With

the capacity for more than 200 beds and an expand-ing potential for health professional training pro-grams, Malamulo represents the future of Adventisthealth care in east and central Africa. Its size anddiversity make it an ideal location for postgraduatemedical education, and ways to develop this arebeing explored with Loma Linda University. CristyShank, MD, provides medical leadership and hasbeen joined by Ryan Hayton, MD, a general sur-geon who grew up in Malamulo when his fatherserved there as an obstetrician/gynecologist. DonSchatzschneider was our administrator until mid-year, when Elisa Brown added this to her responsi-bilities. AHI owes a deep debt to each member ofthis team, who have brought Malamulo back frombankruptcy and given it the potential for true lead-ership in the church.

Zambia—The hospitals in Mwami and Yuka,along with Lusaka Eye Hospital cover the three cor-ners of this great country. Mwami and Yuka carry along legacy of quality Adventist health care in theirlocal areas. Lusaka Eye Hospital, in the capital ofthe country, is a specialized institution providing eyecare to many. A network of rural clinics is beingupgraded and is the front line of health care.Edward Martin has coordinated this network asAHIS country director over the past five years, uni-fying these diverse institutions. His service is greatlyappreciated and has provided a model for nationalcollaboration. The national economy in Zambia haslimited the governmental subsidies for bed grants toour hospitals, which has kept operating budgetslean. The School of Nursing at Mwami continuesto attract students from across the country and pro-duces quality graduates who go out to serve in bothmission and governmental institutions. Its enroll-

ment has expanded with a new dormitory andclassroom space available. Ron Ang, MD, serves asour medical director. Zambia is on the verge ofmajor growth in its programs and institutions.

Zimbabwe—This great country has had a strug-gling economy for many years. Lyn Lamberton,DDS, kept the orthodontia clinic in Harare alivefor as long as possible, until he was unable to secureadequate supplies to provide quality care. Now thatthings are stabilizing in the country, the church hasasked AHI to reopen the clinic and start expandingAdventist health services throughout the nation.Recruitment efforts are underway for an orthodon-tist to begin this important work.

WEST-CENTRAL AFRICA DIVISIONCameroon—Our network in Cameroon hasgrown to three facilities with the development of

Buea Hospital in the English-speaking west. Led byTrixy Colwell,MD, and Bill Colwell, this institutionis rapidly changing from a small clinic to a two-storyhospital with the potential for growth. BatouriHospital in the far east continues under the medicalleadership of Andre Nda’a,MD.Koza Hospital wasblessed for five years with the services of GregShank,MD, and Audrey Shank,MD.Many of youhave heard their stories of incredible suffering andhealing, struggles and miracles. AHI greatly appreci-ates their service as they return to the states to benearer to their daughter, Sarah.At year end, Kozawas staffed by several young doctors trained in theCongo, together with hardy volunteers who areholding things together while a long-term medicaldirector is being recruited.

Liberia—Cooper Hospital in Monrovia, capital ofLiberia, consists of two institutions—a small gen-eral hospital and an eye hospital. First we mustthank the Mosqueda family, a major force atCooper for more than a decade, as they returnhome to the Philippines. The hospital’s eye work isbeing ably carried on by Dr. Sonii, while the mainhospital is struggling with short-term doctors forcoverage. Lucinda Carter continues to lead the insti-tution, and we appreciate her ability to keep every-thing moving forward under difficult conditions.

Mauritania/Senegal—Two couples agreed to pio-neer work in Mauritania over a year ago. Due tothreats to expatriates in the country, work shifted toSenegal and resulted in a new clinic being developedin Niaguis. Boaz and LaRae Papendick provideadministrative and public health leadership whileAndre Saenz,MD, and Bonnie Saenz,MD, serve asphysicians. Exploration continues on how best toserve both the people of Mauritania and Senegalwith both clinical care and community services.Thiswill include training village leaders to encourageimproved public health practices in their locales.Health education often works best when coupled

with clinical services, so new models are beingexplored that can be both effective and sustainable.

Niger—Some two years ago, AHI was invited totake on the leadership of Kirker Hospital inMaine-Soroa, in southeastern Niger. A team wasrecruited, made up of Mindi Guptill, MD, andScott Guptill, Kari and Derrek Hidalgo, and KariBarnum. This intrepid group took up residence inMaine-Soroa and began integrating into the cul-ture and institution. Harsh living conditions wereendured, until the political situation began tounravel. Finally a military coup landed the presi-dent under house arrest, and those helping thehospital at the national level were unable to con-tinue. When security issues also arose, the difficultdecision was made to withdraw our team untilnational elections could return stability to thecountry. We will keep the AHI family informed asplans are made for the next steps in Niger.

Nigeria—What can you say about this giant ofAfrica, now with 160 million citizens? Bustling,aggressive, potential, and conflicts can all describethis part of Africa. The AHI hospital networkkeeps expanding, anchored by Ile-Ife and Jengre,but now including Aba in the east, Inisa near Ife,

and our newest institution, which is just opening,Ubakala near Aba. While great progress is beingmade at each of these places, great needs stillexist, both in personnel and equipment. The diffi-cult right-sizing Ile-Ife went through several yearsago, followed by integration of its programadministration, has led to huge advantages today,as the hospital has cleared all past debts and isable to start upgrading its infrastructure. Jengrehas received assistance from various sources torepair its buildings, and has now completed a newIslamic Center to provide skills training to thelocal Fulani people, who we serve in this part ofNigeria. Akin Obisanya, MD, provides overallleadership to AHIS–Nigeria. New potentialexists as AHIS–Nigeria develops closer workingrelations with Babcock University and its plansfor a new medical school. It is expected that ournetwork of hospitals will serve as affiliated teach-ing hospitals for the expanding Babcock pro-grams. We have the potential for Adventistmedical leadership in the country if we effectivelyutilize all our resources and are able to collaborate

fully. AHIS–Nigeria is committed to becoming afull partner in this national endeavor.

Tchad—JamesAppel,MD, and SarahAppel took onBereHospital about seven years ago, believing theycould transform this struggling institution to a force forGod.Their success has been told inmany venues andhas reverberated across the country.This past year BereHospital performedmore surgeries than all other hos-pitals in the country,with the exception of the teachinghospital in the capital of N’Djamena.At the end of theyear, James and Sarah transferredmedical leadership atBere toOlenNetteburg,MD, andDanaeNetteburg,MD.Olen is in emergencymedicine, andDanae is anobstetrician/gynecologist, both fromLoma Linda. It isa privilege to have them on board, andwe look forwardto further strengthening this growing institution.Berehas dreams for the future, including developing a nurs-ing school and other training programs. James andSarah are nowmoving toMoundou,where donations,primarily from the School of MedicineNationalAuxiliary at LomaLinda,have built a new ambulatorysurgery center to serve thismetropolis of 500,000 people.
