AGIS Introduction The world’s thirst for energy continues to increase especially now the world population went up to 7 bil-

lions. Producers of petroleum and natural gas must begin to look for poorer quality reservoirs, those con-taining high carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide or poor complex geology reservoirs, to fill the high en-ergy demand. Producing these resources is dangerous and unfriendly to our environment because of the presence of toxic hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. All these products need special process to become useful energy. The big question arises as to what can be done with the by-products of these processes, hy-drogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and other more. If it contains sufficient quantities of hydrogen sulfide, it can be converted to something more benefit such as elemental sulfur. However, as the production of sulfur in-creases, certainly the demand and the price will fall. Is there another option? Carbon dioxide has the same problems as hydrogen sulfite to our human and environment. What do we do with CO2? Continue to release to the air? Therefore, all needs to fill those demands for energy have also put a strain on the earth’s environ-ment. Whether or not you believe that man is changing the earth’s climate, it is very clear that the earth’s environment is changing.

Three technologies have emerged (or are emerging) that increase the energy supply and reduce the effect on the environment. These technologies are: 1. Acid gas injection (AGI), 2. Enhanced oil recovery by CO2 injection (CO2 EOR), and 3. Carbon capture and storage (CCS). These are the basic of waste gas injection. Each of these involves the injection of a stream rich in hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, or both. These mixtures are called acid gases; a name that arises because CO2 and H2S form weak acids when dissolved in water. This is called Acid Gas Injection.

A symposium for acid gas injection was the brainchild of Sphere Technology Connection, a Calgary company specializing in transfer technology related to the petroleum industry throughout the world. AGIS will discuss all processes related to the injection of acid gases – AGI, CO2 EOR, rich gas injection EOR and CCS. All of these processes share common aspects and there are synergies that can be exploited from the more mature processes (EOR) to the emerging processes (CCS).

The first two International Acid Gas Injection Symposium (AGIS) were held in Calgary in October 2009 and September 2010. In attendance were more than 100 delegates from Canada, the USA, Europe, Australia and Asia presenting expertise and experience related to all aspects AGI, CCS, and topics related to EOR. In total 60 papers were presented including keynote address by Dr. Mehran Pooladi-Davish, Vice President Engineering of Fekete Associate in Calgary and Dr. John Carroll, Director of Geostorage Process Engineer-ing at Gas Liquids Engineering also in Calgary in 2009 and Dr. Stefan Bachu in 2010. Dr. Bachu is a Dis-tinguished Scientist, CO2 Storage at Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (formerly the Alberta Re-

search Council) in Edmonton. In 2012, AGIS III it will be held in Banff Park Lodge

Resort and Conference Center, Alberta Canada during May 29th to June 1, 2012 hosted by Sphere Technology Connection Ltd, Canada and supported by Gas Liquids Engineering Ltd. Canada. We believe AGIS III will be more successful then previous two AGIS.

We hope to see you in Banff, Alberta, Canada sharing your advanced technology and experiences.

AGIS III Keynote Speaker

Firoozabadi is among the few who have received the AIME An-thony Lucas Gold Medal, the SPE Honorary Membership Award, the SPE John Franklin Carll Award, in recognition of setting the stage and new directions for petroleum production and environ-mental stewardship of hydrocarbon energy production.

Abbas Firoozabadi, Yale University, USA. Abbas Firoozabadi has published some 150 Journal papers in pe-troleum interface, thermodynamics of hydrocarbon reservoirs and pro-duction, and multiphase multi-species flow in permeable me-dia. Firoozabadi has published mainly in the Society of Petroleum En-gineers (SPE) Journals, AIChE Journal, Journal of Chemical Physics, Journal of Physical Chemistry B, Langmuir, Water Resources Research, Advances in Water Resources, and Journal of Computational Physics.

He has authored a graduate text, “Thermodynamics of Hydrocarbon Reservoirs,” published by McGraw Hill in 1999. The second edition of the book with major expansion will become available in mid 2011. Firoozabadi is the most prolific author of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Journals with over 70 SPE Journal papers. He is also the most published author in petroleum engineering in comparison to faculty members and scientists in petro-leum engineering in the US. He has two patents, one related to wettability alteration to inter-mediate gas wetting, and another patent for use of alcohols as co-surfactants for dispersion of the solid phase in flowlines.

Firoozabadi's major contributions include theoretical, experimental and advanced com-putational methods in thermodynamics and kinetics of flow assurance in hydrocarbon en-ergy production. His current research focus includes higher-order numerical models to allow evaluation of CO2 subsurface injection. In the last several years Firoozabadi has focused on nano-technology concepts in oil and gas flowlines. Firoozabadi directs research efforts and provides insight in three of the potentially world largest scale CO2 injection projects, one in Mexico for Pemex, one in the North Sea for ConocoPhilips and one for the sub-salt group of giant fields for Petrobras in Brazil. His idea on increased gas well production rate is being implemented in Austria by OMV. His ideas on prevention of asphaltene precipitation through formation of nano-particles are being pursued in Abu Dhabi.
