Design

The PGF hydraulic pumps are leak gap compensated internal gearpumps with a fixed displacement.

They basically comprise of a housing (1), bearing cover (1.1), blankingplate (1.2), internal gear (2), pinion shaft (3), plain bearings (4), axialdiscs (5) and stop pin (6) as well as the segment assembly (7), whichcomprises of segment (7.1), segment carrier (7.2) and the sealingrolls (7.3).

Suction and displacement process

The pinion (3) which is carried in hydro-dynamic bearings drives theinternal toothed ring gear (2) in the direction of rotation indicated.

During rotation volume is increased in the suction area at an angleof approx. 180°. A negative pressure is produced and fluid flows into the chambers.

The sickle-shaped segment assembly (7) separates the suctionchamber from the pressure chamber. Within the pressure chamberthe teeth of the pinion (3) mesh into the tooth spaces of the internalgear (2). The fluid is then displaced via pressure channel (P).

Axial compensation

The axial compensation force FA acts within the pressure chamberarea and is generated by the pressure field (8) on the axial plates (5).

Radial compensation

The radial compensation force FR acts on the segment (7.1) and thesegment carrier (7.2).

The area ratios and the position of the sealing rolls (7.3) betweenthe segments and the segment carrier are so designed to provide avirtually leak gap free seal between the internal gear (2), the segmentassembly (7) and the pinion (3).

Spring elements under the sealing rolls (7.3) ensure adequate contactpressure, even at very low pressures.

Hydro-dynamic and hydro-static bearings

The forces acting on the pinion shaft (3) are absorbed by the hydro-dynamically lubricated plain radial bearings (4); whilst those actingon the internal gear (2) are absorbed by the hydro-static bearing (9).

Tooth form

An involute tooth design is used for both gears. The long length ofthe gear tooth results in a low level of flow and pressure pulseswhich, in turn contributes significantly to low noise operation.

The longitudinal axial clearances between the fixed and the rotatingcomponents are thereby extremely small and guarantee optimumaxial sealing of the pressure chamber.

Multiple pumps – engineering guidelines

• The general technical data as for a single pump apply (see pages 4 and 5).

• The combined pumps must all have the same direction of rotation.

• The most highly loaded pump should be the first pump.

• The maximum through drive torque must be checked for each application by the project engineer. This also applies to combinationpumps that are already available (units that have material nos.).

• The drive torque of a pump stage is calculated as follows:T : Torque in Nm

• A common suction is not possible.

• Due to strength and stability reasons we recommend that, for triple and more pump combinations, the ISO 4-hole mounting flange toVDMA „E4“is used.

Selection:

• The front pump must either have the shaft version E, J or L.

• The middle pump must have the shaft version L.

• The rear pump must have the shaft version N.

• If a pump of the next smallest build size is to be fitted then thefirst pump must have the code K at the end of the description(e.g. PGF3 + PGF2 ⇒Front pump: PGF3-3X/032RJ07VU2K)

Dimensions:

• The connection dimensions are as per the individual pumps (seepage 18).

Motor-pump-drive unit: design

The electric motor and the inernal gear pump are connected withouta pump mounting bracket. This results in the unit being very compactand cost effective.

A lower noise level is achieved due to there being a lower emittingarea when compared with normal motor pump assemblies.

Assembly of the unit as well as holding pump mounting bracketsand couplings in stock by the customer is no longer necessary.

Engineering guidelines

Commissioning– Check to ensure that the system is

correctly and cleanly assembled.– Only fill the system with fluid via a filter

with the correct retention rate.– Take the direction of rotation arrow into

account.– Start the pump without load and allow

it to run for a few seconds without loadin order to ensure sufficient lubrication.

– Never let the pump run without oil.– Should the pump not run clear of

bubbles after approx. 20 seconds, thesystem must be rechecked.After reaching the operating values,check all pipe connections for leaks.Check the operating termperature.

Comprehensive instructions and proposalscan be found in the Hydraulic Trainer,volume 3, RE 00 281, "Planning and designof hydraulic power systems"When using internal gear pumps werecommend that the following guidelines arepartically taken into account.Technical dataAll of the stated technical data are dependenton manufacturing tolerances and are validwithin certain operating conditions.Please take into account that minor variationsare possible and technical data can beaffected by differing conditions (e.g. viscosity).Characteristic curvesWhen specifiying the drive motor please notethe maximum application data in thecharacteristic curves on pages 6 to 8.

NoiseThe noise pressure level values given on pages6 to 8 are measured according to DIN 45 635,sheet 26. This means that only the noiseemission of the pump is given. Ambientinfluences (such as a place of installation,piping, etc.) are not taken into account.The values refer to only one pump.With internal gear pumps, the pulsationspassed to valves, pipes and machinecomponents is very small due to the low flowpulsation present (approx. 2 to 3 %).In spite of this, unfavourable installationconditions can raise the noise radiation levelat the final point of installation for the powerunit by 5 to 10 dB (A) higher than that forthe pump itself.

Combination pumpsThe PGF series of internal gear pumps canbe combined to for multi-flow pumps. Pleasetake into account the maximum through drivetorques (see engineering guidelines for multi-flow pumps), as well as that the operatingmedium of the individual pump stages is notseparated by shaft seals.

Attention! Operating multi-flow pumpswith differing mediums is only possible afterconsultation.

Bleeding– Before starting commissioning, we

recommed that the pump casing is filledwith oil. This increases operationalreliability and reduces wear withunfavourable installation conditions.

– On the first start-up, carefulcracking of the outlet flange withthe pump running at zero pressurewill permit any foam forming inthe oil to escape (possiblyprovided splash protection). Onlywhen bubble-free oil is flowingshould the connection beretightened.

General– All pumps are tested for function and

performance prior to despatch. Noalterations of any kind may may madeto the pump. If any alteration is made,the guarantee immediately becomesvoid!

– Repairs may only be carried out by themanufacturer or an approved agent orsubsidiary. Repairs and maintenancecarried out by third parties are notguaranteed.

Important notes

– Assembly, maintenance and repair ofpumps may only be carried out byauthorised, trained and instructedpersonnel!

– Pumps may only be operated within thepermissible parameters (see page 3)!

– Pumps may only be operated when ingood condition!

– When working on the pump make surethat the system pressure is zero!

– Unauthorised conversions and changeswhich affect the safety and function arenot permitted!

– Protective devices (e.g. coupling guards)must be fitted and existing devices notremoved!

– Always check that all fixing screws areproperly seated! (Take the correcttightening torques into account)

– General safety and accident preventionregulations must be observed at alltimes!
