Internship WA internships provide successful applicants the opportunity to complete an internship compliant

with the requirements of the Medical Board of Australia registration standard “Granting general

registration as a medical practitioner to Australian and New Zealand medical graduates on

completion of intern training”.

Internship is a period (usually one year) of supervised education and training in accredited intern

training positions within a WA hospital.

Interns are required to complete 47 weeks of clinical training (exclusive of any time off for sick or

annual leave). 10 days of professional development leave is available within the 47 weeks of

clinical training.

The Medical Board of Australia and PMCWA require all interns to undertake a minimum of;

10 weeks experience in Medicine,

10 weeks experience in Surgery, and

8 weeks experience in Emergency Medical Care, and

a mix of clinical experience, for the remaining weeks within the 47 week intern year.

Interns are employed by a Primary Employing Health Service (PEHS) ensuring each trainee

undertakes these essential rotations within their intern year. PMCWA also encourages interns to

gain exposure in a range of health service settings including large teaching, outer metropolitan,

private, regional, rural and remote hospitals.

Education and Assessment

Interns are formally assessed during each term. The assessment is an opportunity for interns to

discuss their progress against agreed learning objectives with their Term Supervisor. These

objectives will be outlined at the beginning of each rotation.

Education and training primarily occurs at the bedside (in-service training). Formal educational

sessions are provided at each PEHS and all interns are expected to attend.

Each PEHS also has a Director of Postgraduate Medical Education (DGPME) and each hospital

has a Medical Education Officer (MEO). Both have an important role in supporting and enhancing

the intern education program by offering assistance and advice on the processes of teaching,

assessment and evaluation. They also provide much needed support for the personal welfare of

interns and resident medical officers. Each hospital that accepts interns also has a Director of

Clinical Training (DCT) who provides advocacy, support, supervision and counsel to interns.

Certificate of Completion

Upon satisfactory completion of internship, the PEHS will complete a certificate of completion of an

accredited internship for each intern. The completed certificate and any necessary supporting

documentation will be submitted to PMCWA for review and forwarding to the Medical Board of

Australia. PMCWA will assess each intern’s experience and make a recommendation to the

Medical Board of Australia. This certificate is necessary for the Medical Board of Australia to

consider granting general (unconditional) registration. Further details on the requirements of

Eligibility

Graduates of an Accredited Australian Medical School

Medical Graduates of Accredited Australian medical schools are eligible to apply for an internship

in WA.

New Zealand Medical Graduates

Medical graduates of accredited New Zealand medical schools are eligible to apply for an

internship.

Meet the Medical Board of Australia’s English language skills registration standard.

Eligible to work in Australia

Medical graduates must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, New Zealand

citizen or have a valid temporary Australian resident visa (including a student visa) that enables

them to work in Australia for the entire duration of the intern position.

Have not previously worked as a doctor in Australia or New Zealand

To be eligible you must have never been registered or practised as a health practitioner or

previously commenced an internship in Australia or overseas.

Placements are limited and priority is given to graduates of WA medical schools, who are

Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens.

As part of the national alignment of intern application systems, jurisdictions have agreed on a

minimum data set which will be compulsory for all applications. This data includes the following.

Primary Employing Health Services and rotation (placement) health services

Primary Employing Health Services (PEHS) offer internships in Western Australia. Each PEHS has designated placement health services where rotation terms may be undertaken to fulfil training requirements. The table below shows placement health services associated with each of the PEHS. In your application you will be asked to preference the PEHS where you would like to undertake your internship. You are encouraged to attend the information sessions to learn what each PEHS has to offer.

Rural Internship and Rural Rotations The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) provides a pathway into rural training and a career in

rural medicine for junior doctors with a specific interest in rural and remote medicine.

Depending on the number of rural rotations you would like to do, there are two pathways available.

Path One - Metropolitan hospital internship with rural rotations

Select a metropolitan PEHS (FSH, RPH or SCGH) as your primary employer and indicate a

preference for one or more rural rotations available across the WA Country Health Service.

Applicants wishing to complete their internship with a Metropolitan PEHS and include some rural

rotations are asked to:

Rank their preferred rural sites from most to least preferred.

Provide permission for their application to be provided to WACHS to collaboratively assess

the selection of interns.

(Applications may be dually assessed by WACHS and metropolitan PEHS to facilitate collaborative

provision of rural terms to interns on secondment).

OR Path Two - Rural hospital internship Select WACHS as your primary employer to complete your full intern year in a rural hospital site (Available at either Albany or Bunbury).

Applicants wishing to complete their full internship with the WA Country Health Service are asked

to:

Provide a brief statement indicating why they are interested in completing a rural internship

(maximum of 350 words).

Rank their preferred rural sites from most to least preferred.

How to Apply

Applications are made on the MedjobsWA website.

Create your Profile

First time users will need to create an account by selecting ‘Register’ and following the prompts to

create an account and password.

Note: The email you use to create your account will be your primary means of contact and

will be used for a Notification of Offer if an offer is made.

Please provide an address you check frequently.

The system will automatically send an activation email to the nominated email address. Once this

is received, you can activate your account, complete your profile and begin your application.

It is very important to complete the information you can for your profile (basic personal information,

contact and address details). The online application form will pre-fill your application from

information contained in your profile wherever possible. Be sure to keep your profile up to date as

some information will be updated on your application e.g. your email address.

When you have your account and profile ready, you can begin your application.

Hint: You can create your profile prior to the position opening date. You can elect to receive a

notification of when the advertisement is posted and applications open.

Read through the advertisement and attachments carefully.

The advert and attachments contain essential instructions on how to apply and what is expected of you throughout the process.

When you are ready to begin you application, go to the bottom of the advertisement and click

‘Apply Now’. The link will take you to the online application.

IMPORTANT: Incomplete applications can be edited before the close date and time by

accessing ‘My Application History’ on your profile page and clicking ‘Go’.

To exit the application process at any stage, click ‘Save and Exit’ and ‘Sign Out’.

Saved applications are not automatically submitted.

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time.

Submitting your application

All applications must be submitted by the close of the application period, no later than 12:00pm

(noon) WST, Friday 3 June 2016. Late applications will not be accepted.

The online application system operates on a digital clock. Applications submitted at midday

(WST) on Friday 3 June 2016 may not be accepted. Please allow time for your application

submission so that it is processed by the site before the closing date and time.

Once your application is successfully lodged, you will receive an automatically generated response

advising that the application has been successfully submitted. This should also be reflected in your

profile.

Once applications are submitted, they are able to be edited until the closing date and time. This is

contingent upon any changes being made before the deadline and saved when made. You do not

need to withdraw the application to edit it.

DO NOT WITHDRAW YOUR APPLICATION UNLESS YOU DO NOT WANT A WA

INTERNSHIP.

It is your responsibility to confirm your application has been submitted. You can confirm your

application’s status in the Applications section of your profile page.

If an application is withdrawn an email notification will be sent.

Application Questions

Personal Details

Personal details must be provided and include: AHPRA Medical Intern Placement Number (IPN),

name, postal address, education, details of two professional referees, one of whom should have

provided supervision in a clinical placement, university student identification number,

citizenship/residency status and WA public sector employment history.

Personal information such as gender and date of birth are optional and are collected for statistical

purposes only. These are not used in assessing your application. The information collected will be

used for reporting purposes.

Note: Referees are not required to provide a referee report or send any documentation in order for you to complete your application.

Medical Intern Placement Number (MIPN / IPN)?

Your Intern Placement Number (IPN) is a nine digit number generated by the Australian Health

Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is unique to you. An IPN is different to a University

Student Identification Number.

All medical graduates from 2013 onwards should have an individual IPN. If you have delayed

internship or plan to do so you should retain your IPN as it is a unique identifier and remains valid.

All 2016 final year medical students of Australian medical schools should have been issued an

IPN. If you have not received or has misplaced your IPN, you must contact your medical school.

An IPN is compulsory for all applications for 2016 Internships in all states, including WA. Applicants

must have their IPN ready prior to commencing their application.

Curriculum Vitae All applicants are required to attach their curriculum vitae (CV) which should not exceed two A4

pages.

Your CV must include your name and current contact details along with information on your

educational background (including clinical placements), employment, skills and interests.

Referee details are not required in the CV as they must be submitted in the online application.

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria are the skills, qualifications and experience considered necessary to successfully

perform the duties of an intern. The 2017 intern application process requires applicants prepare a

statement summarising their experience and addressing how you meet the four criteria contained

in the Job Description (JDF) (maximum of 500 words each). Applications are assessed on merit, in

accordance with standard public sector recruitment processes.

1. Primary medical degree from an Australian Medical Council accredited medical school,

registrable with the Medical Board of Australia.

2. Ability to work effectively in a healthcare environment.

In your answer, provide examples of good interpersonal skills, an ability to work in a

multidisciplinary environment and good organisation and time management skills.

3. Commitments to working in Western Australia to promote, protect, maintain and restore the

health of the people of Western Australia.

Indicate how these commitments have influenced your decision to choose your hospital of

first preference.

4. Commitment to continued learning and academic excellence.

There are many guides on addressing selection criteria available online. Public and university

libraries also have texts on addressing selection criteria and job applications.

equivalent) continuous education taught and assessed solely in English, in any of the

Helpful Hints

Scan and save your necessary attachments as soon as possible to allow time to ensure your files meet file size and format requirements.

Start your application early to allow time to deal with any issues that may arise.

Accepting an intern position offer Applicants will only receive one offer from WA. Offers must be accepted or declined through the

online application system by the stated deadline.

If you do not accept your offer by the deadline you will be sent an email advising you that you have

declined the position and you will not be offered any further intern positions in WA.

Instructions on how to accept or decline your offer and a link will be provided in an email

notification of offer. The offer can be accessed through your user profile in the Applications section.

An email notification will be sent to confirm your acceptance or decline of an offer.

Once the offer has been accepted online, the PEHS will send a formal notification of offer for which

a separate response is required.

To accept an offer of internship you must accept online AND formally respond to the notification of

offer from the employing PEHS.

If you are unable to accept or decline your offer online due to technical problems that you are

unable to resolve with the help desk, you can email PMCWA with your full name and application

number and formally request that PMCWA update your application status on your behalf. PMCWA

cannot alter the status of applications without express written permission from the applicant. You

will need to:

State whether you are accepting or declining the offer or withdrawing your application.

State that you request PMCWA to update the status of your application on your behalf

Give PMCWA permission to do so.

What if I receive an offer from another state? Each state and territory undertakes their own intern recruitment. Some applicants apply to more

than one jurisdiction and are successful in more than one state. Applicants are encouraged to

accept the offer they plan to commence and decline all others in a timely manner. This will enable

an unplaced applicant to be offered a position.

As part of a national audit of internship acceptances for the 2017 clinical year, identifying

information from intern applications in WA will be provided to a national database. The national

audit team uses the information to determine the total number of applications nationally and

whether applicants have applied for and accepted multiple positions. Any applicant who

simultaneously accepts two or more intern offers nationally will be contacted by the national audit

team and requested to formally accept their position of choice and decline all others. A 48 hour

period is allowed in which applicants can respond, after which only the first offer remains available

to the applicant and all other offers are withdrawn.

The administrator may communicate with the Medical Board of Australia and/or the jurisdiction to

which an applicant has applied for the purpose of verifying applicant details.

Offers may be made from the national commencement of offers date, Monday 11 July 2016 until

the national closing of general offers date in Friday 25 November 2016.

Offers are suspended during national audits of acceptances. Audit dates are set by national

agreement and are subject to change. Applicants in the suitable pool who have not received an

offer of an intern position will be notified by email at the national close of general offers.
