Choreographers Note: This duet is inspired by a srory from the area of the Wesr Coast of Auckland, Z, from the iwi (tribe) ofTe Kawerau a Maki. The story is about a young warrior from the village ofHuia in the Karamarura Valley and a woman from a visiring tribe, who fall in love. (CArporal Anaia Amohau, 1940)

Following the outbreak of the 2nd World War, Sir Apirana Ngara advocated the formation of a Maori military unit following the precedent of the Maori Pioneer Banal ion of 1914-1918. Being one of the most highly decorated units ofWW II, rhe 28th Maori Barralion are acknowledged and remembered not only for their legendary deeds in battle but also for their sacrifice, camaraderie, kinship, loyalty, laughter and singing.

Mnnoirr of Actiw &rvicr was created as a salutation and acknowledgment to the 2006 Year of the Veteran and follows the lives of a rural seulemenr prior ro and during the 2nd World War.

Although Mrmoirr of Acrivr &rviu is loosely based around my uncle Hare Pepene of the 2Rrh Maori Battalion and the diary of my grandfather Charles John Murphy, the characters embodied represent the lives of all those affected during rhis time, reflecting on experiences had and hopes for the future.

Ngai Tahu 32 is based on the whakapapa (geneaJog)•) of choreographer Louise Poriki Bry.a.nc. Whakapapa is imporrant among Maori. uPapa" is anything broad, flar and hard such as a flat rock, a slab or a board. "Whakapapa" is to place in layers, lay one upon another. Hence the rerm Whakapapa is used to describe both the recitation in proper order of genealogies, and also co name rhe geneaJogies. The visualisation is of building layer by layer upon the past cowards rhe presem, and on into rhe future. The whakapapa include nor just rhe geneaJogies bur rhe many spiritual, myt:hological and human srories thar flesh our rhe genealogical backbone.

-Our story follows one line of whakapapa descending from Pmiki, which is concained within a file named Ngai Tahu 32. \Vi Poriki (Tangata pai ki nga maori ki nga Pakeha. Rangarira no Ngai Tahu) signed the deed for rhe sale of Maori land in rhe Sourh Island ofKew Zealand, where a remh of rhe land was to be kepr as reserves for 1 gai Tahu.(the Jargesr South Island tribe). This was nor done.

Accepting baptism in 1843, Wi Poriki was also known as rhe Sourh Island 's firsr busker, performing haka on rhe streets. Wirh rhe coins collected in his hat he would adjourn ro the nearest hotel wirh his audience. He also carried rhe coins from rhe sale of land on long journeys. Wi Poriki's son Ihaia rook up rhe struggle ro fighr for rhe hospitals, schools and reserves promised in rhe sale of rhe land. His rangi (Maori funeral rire) is described wirhin rhe Ngai Tahu 32 file.

Ihaia's grandson Alexander Ian Waituru Bryanr worked in a South Island post office in rhe 1930's- 1950's, in rhe Iacer years as Post Masrer. Alexander is Louise Potiki Bryant's paternal grandfather.
