Interlaken Technology Corporation introduces a new and improved Simple Performance Tester, also called an Asphalt Mix Performance Tester. This computer controlled, hydraulic testing machine conducts three NCHRP Project 9-29 compressive tests—Flow Time (Static Creep), Flow Number (Repeated Load), and Dynamic Modulus Test |E*|—on cylindrical asphalt concrete specimens.

Tough requirements demand hard numbers.The Interlaken Simple Performance Test System includes flexible, fully integrated software for control, data acquisition and real time monitoring. UniTest, Interlaken’s control system software, features a test wizard to guide the operator through each testing process. In addition, a real time graphic scope provides instant visual feedback of up to six channels of system data. The data is automatically collected and recorded with time stamp information for analyzing data. Software produces reports in a format specified by NCHRP 9-29.

To maximize accessibility during specimen setup, Interlaken integrates the pressure vessel and temperature chamber. The enclosure is lifted pneumatically to expose all sides of the specimen. The temperature is regulated by a high performance chiller to quickly reach desired temperatures, expediting sample preparation and testing durations to save time.

The Interlaken Asphalt Mix Performance Tester incorporates “magnetic-mounted” extensometers to provide accurate and reliable measurements. C. SPT Extensometer Target Glue Fixture

The glue fixture is used for gluing metallic gage points onto the specimens for the magnetic mounted extensometers to mount on. The fixture is made to utilize the weight of the specimen to actuate the locating arms. These arms have holders for the gage points that maintain the preset gage length of 70 mm. The arms also keep the faces of the gage points parallel to each other during the glue cure time. The Dynamic Modulus test requires the use three specimen mounted measurement devices (Interlaken provides three extensometers with each system). This system utilizes one extensometer assembly as shown below 120 degrees apart on the specimen.

Without a sample on the fixture, clean gage points can be set in place on the mounting seats. Typically,

a 5 minute epoxy or other suitable adhesive is used to adhere the gage points to the specimen. Apply the desired amount of adhesive to the gage points and set the specimen onto the base plate. The weight of the specimen will actuate the arms into the specimen and hold the gage points in position

until the adhesive is cured.

D. SPT Proving Ring Assembly

The Interlaken Proving Ring Assembly (verification device) used to verify the dynamic performance of the force and specimen deformation measuring systems according to section 14.5 of NCHRP 9-29

F. Dynamic Modulus Master Curves Software

A dynamic modulus master curve for asphalt concrete is a critical input for flexible pavement design in the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide developed in NCHRP Project 1-37A. It includes testing specimens at different temperatures and loading rates between 0.1 and 25 Hz. The data at various temperatures are shifted with respect to time until the curves merge into a single function

representing the master curve. The master curve and shift factors are then developed from this database of measured moduli using numerical optimization.
