Who Is Newton ?

Newton, Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), mathematician and physicist, one of the foremost scientific intellects of all time. Born at Woolsthorpe, near Grantham in Lincolnshire, where he attended school, he entered Cambridge University in 1661; he was elected a Fellow of Trinity College in 1667, and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1669

Why Newton‘s Rings Are Formed ?

Newton's rings are formed due to interference between the light waves reflected from the top and bottom surfaces of the air film formed between the lens and glass sheet.

Why is sodium light used instead of white ordinary light in newton's rings .

Newton's rings are caused by interference of light waves. When monochromatic light is used, then newton's rings are alternately dark and bright .When white light is used then a few coloured rings are visible. After that due to overlapping of rings of different colours , the rings cannot be viewed. The different colored rings are obtained because of different wavelength of colors. the order of colors depend on order of ring.

DIFFRACTION

When a beam of light passes through a small opening it spreads to some extent into the regiom of the geometrical shadow also. The shadows formed by small obstacles are not sharp. This bending of light round the edges of an obstacles or the encroachment of light within the geometrical shadow is called differaction.
