Dear Church Family,

A church member passed along this letter that he receivedcourtesy of being on the mailing list of a church in Florida:

I’ve always hated asking for money.

When I was a pastor, I dreaded “SS”—Stewardship Sunday—untilI came upon a plan. On Stewardship Sunday, I would tell thecongregation that I planned to preach on stewardship, and that thesermon was so good, it would make them feel really guilty, and souncomfortable and challenged that we would be able to double thebudget.

Then I said, “But I’ve decided not to preach that sermon until nextSunday. If you give generously, you won’t have to hear it. So give, and we’ll talk about Jesus next Sunday.

They did and I was free.

I thought it was the threat that raised the money, but I’m a lot oldernow and a little bit wiser. It wasn’t the threat; it was the promise to“talk about Jesus.”

Pastor’s Corner by Pastor Karl Haffner continued from page 1

Jesus said that if He was lifted up, He would draw everybody to Himself. That’s true, but it’s also truethat if He be lifted up, the budget will take care of itself….But I still stay awake at night and worry … so, send money. Send as much as you can. And if youcan’t, pray that I have more faith.Seriously, thanks so much for standing with us. We are making a big difference in a lot of lives.

You see why I love that letter, don’t you? Let me just say ditto on the highlights: Come to the Kettering Church. I promise you’ll hear about Jesus. We, too, are making a big difference in a lot of lives. Yep, I also worry about the financial realities in a big church, such as support for Spring

Valley Academy, Project Renewal, support for Good Neighbor House, and dozens of other ministries that function only because of your faithful, sacrificial gifts.

And finally, a big thanks for standing with us to shine the light of Jesus in our neighborhood.

In Christ,Pastor Karl

The Safety Signal

This is a new column to highlight items ofaction and discussion from the new churchSafety Committee. In the present timethere are many safety and security chal-lenges that face all types of organizations, and unfortunately churches are not exemptfrom these. Up to this point, the KetteringSDA church has taken only minimal precautions for safetyand security, such as locking outside doors and meetingfire safety regulations. In order to advance our prepared-ness for various types of emergency and security situa-tions, the board recently established the SafetyCommittee. Dan Stevens and I are co-chairs of this com-mittee and so far we have had one meeting with both itemsof discussion and action. Adventist Risk Management(ARM), an administrative entity of the SDA church in-volved with many aspects of church safety and security, has a number of resources and materials that addressthese issues in a broad way and we have been looking attheir materials. We also had a Kettering police officer doa scheduled walk through of our facility and a report wassubmitted with a number of recommendations. That sameofficer and a Kettering fire fighter then came for anevening meeting to discuss our needs and their recom-mendations and thoughts. We are beginning this work andjourney from these recommendations and from thesematerials. The three broad areas of responsibility are FireSafety, Medical Emergencies, and Physical Safety of boththe facilities and people. We are probably most preparedwith infrastructure for fire safety as construction andcommunity regulations require those. Without trying to becomprehensive (and boring), the items of most currentinterest are:

Acquisition and deployment of an automated exter-nal defibrillator (AED). These devices are used toshock the heart out of certain types of suddencardiac arrest and that is the definitive treatmentnecessary in those situations. AED’s are routinelyfound in schools, shopping malls, commercial air-planes, and sports arenas. You may notice the newwhite cabinet on the wall of the narthex; this iswhere the AED will be deployed. It has already beenacquired and is awaiting the end of training fordeployment.

CPR training for any and all who want or need it.Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a way tohelp rescue anyone who has stopped breathing or

whose heart has stopped beating or who ischoking. In its most basic use it requires nospecial equipment but only knowledge anddesire to help someone in need. In my opin-ion,

Also, the State of Ohio requires thatorganizations train people in the use of

AED’s if one is to be deployed. We will be schedul-ing CPR classes soon. It is planned that the classeswill be American Heart Association Family &Friends CPR with the addition of AED use.

. They would beappropriate for anyone from approximately age 12and up who is in reasonable physical health. Themaximum enrollment for any one session will beabout 15 and the dates and times will be shown inupcoming bulletin announcements. No credential(card) is given for these classes but each personkeeps their AHA Family & Friends CPR booklet.

The soon deployment of two commercial grade andOSHA compliant First Aid cabinets for minor inju-ries and incidents. One will be just inside the doorof the Deacon’s room and one in a clearly visibleand accessible location in the kitchen.

The redirection of people traffic through the maindoors of our church rather than through peripheraland remote doors. For several safety reasons it ishighly recommended that we prevent routine trafficthrough the exit doors by the Cradle Room (NEentrance) and by the baptistry (NW entrance). These doors are not monitored presently in anyway, they are also not visible to general or openareas and the door by the Cradle room is also byparking spaces which would allow fast getaway fora person engaging in criminal behavior. We areplanning on alarming these doors and limiting rou-tine use of them to emergency exits.

Finally for now we are also planning on the installa-tion of several internal security cameras with re-cording capability. Kettering Medical Center hasgenerously offered to assist us with this projectwhich will be moving forward over the next severalmonths.

As summer comes to a close and our plans turn towards the school year, I would like to spotlight the recent successfulVacation Bible School program directed by our Children’s Intern, JaLynn Berglund, assisted by Lindsey Conkle. Forfive days children gathered in a majestic castle kingdom where they learned about “Standing Strong for Jesus.”

After VBS wrapped up, the kids had a special opportunity to visit a real life castle, where we explored on a scavengerhunt, played castle court games, and sang our favorite songs from VBS.

Our Youth have also been active in summer ministries, withmany just getting back from a mission trip to Romania. Whileover there, they helped build a church and run VBS for 100+kids. We’ll have a special opportunity to hear their stories offaith and action this September 7, when the Youth host aspecial worship during both First and Second Services.

I personally want to send a huge “Thank You” to all thosewho have supported KETSDA’s Children’s Ministries andYouth Group through your time, energy, prayers, andresources. Events and ministries like these could not happenwithout the church working together to connect eachemerging generation with the message of the Gospel.

Kairos CookiesBaking cookies for prisoners has become a favoriteministry for many of our members. Ten thousandcookies are baked and prayed over for each event —the next will be the weekend of September 14.The Kairos Prison Ministry is designed to build andnurture strong Christian communities among correctionalinstitutions. There are 42 inmates and approximately 60volunteers involved in each program. Wardens reportimprovements in the whole prison environment due to thepositive influence of residents who have experienced theKairos program. After the weekend, residents continue their faith walkby participating in small share and prayer groups. They meet weekly to share on a deep spiritual level andto pray for one another. They also attend monthlyreunions and twice-a-year retreats.

Ways you can help:

1. Contribute financially – total cost for theweekend is about $6,000. Donations are taxdeductible.

2. Bake cookies – all types, homemade and prayedover. Rice Krispie treats and brownies are thefavorites. Every resident (nearly 2500 men) aswell as staff receive the cookies – a great way tobreak down walls and mend wars.

3. Pray – sign up to pray for one hour over thecourse of the weekend, beginning September 13at 4 p.m. and ending September 15 at 6 p.m. Signup in the narthex. Your names will be transferredto the main sheet at the prison for all to see.Hardened criminals have cried when seeingpeople dedicate an hour to pray for them.
