Running Head: Interactive Multimedia Game

Introduction Technology should be used as a tool in education to keep students engaged and interested in the content. Multimedia tools allow for students to become lifelong learners and college and career ready. The current problem with technology is that it is only used as way to transfer media on a screen. Instead, technology should be used as way to help students reach higher order thinking skills. Students should use technology in the classroom to help create and evaluate new materials. Technology will help put the learning back on the students and in turn, the teacher will become the facilitator. In an English Language Arts classroom, vocabulary needs to be taught. However, with vocabulary, students often use their rote memorization skills, and do not truly learn or understand he vocabulary words. Using interactive games based on technology can help students learn vocabulary.

Product Description In the classroom, technology should be used as a medium to keep students engaged with the content. To ensure students are engaged in the learning, technology needs to be interactive. Using the projector to show a video is not using technology to its fullest potential. This lesson is designed to specifically ensure that the technology used is interactive and engaging. The lesson will be created on Raptivity. Raptivity is an eLearning interactive tool. Raptivity allows teachers to create interactive models and games that are premade. For the lesson designed, students will play a game similar to the famous television show Millionaire. Students will answer various questions on a set of vocabulary words. This lesson is designed as a way for students to learn outside of the classroom. The lesson will support ISTE standard for teachers: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. The lesson will help students learn interactively on their own. This also supports the ISTE standard for teachers: Model digital age and work learning. The teacher will be able to model the use of interactive lessons and encourage students to use technology in their school work. The project will be uploaded on a learning management system for the students to access.

Literature Review Interactive learning can be done when educators choose to use a flipped classroom model. Flipped classroom refers to teaching students basic knowledge before a class begins (Gwo-Jen and Chiu-Lin, 2017). With the flipped classroom, students can do basic learning outside of school and be prepared with questions for the teacher the next day. According to a study by Gwo-Jen and Chiu-Lin (2017), using interactive e-books in the flipped classroom model can help encourage students to construct knowledge by themselves. Since the learning done outside of the class was interactive, they found that all types of learners benefited from this experience (194). The flipped classroom and interactive technology are important for students to learn. In a study done by Mohamad and Alwani Zolkifli (2016), they found that interactive media inside and outside of the classroom is helpful in learning. They found that the flipped classroom is

useful but technology also needs to be used in the classroom. Technology in education can improve “students’ concentration in class” (Mohamad and Alwani Zolkifi, 2016). Interactive technology is useful in education because it can help teachers explain the learning content better and improve students learning and understanding of certain concepts. Interactive technology can also improve students’ retention with vocabulary words and definitions. In a study done by Franciosi, Junichi, Yuuki, and Suying (2016), they found that when students played a simulation game, their motor, sensory, and emotive memories increased. Overall, the study found “simple simulation does enhance long-term vocabulary retention” (Franciosi, Junichi, Yuuki, and Suying 2016).

Design Planning (DDDE)

Decide Phase: The main objective and goal for the lesson is for students to identify vocabulary words by participating in an interactive game. The interactive lesson will be created using Raptivity and uploaded on CourseSites for the students to see and use. The students who will use this lesson are in 10th grade. The target audience of learners will have different comfort levels of using technology. The learners will range from being advanced to basic. Students will need to be able to know how to use a LMS so they can do work on their own for homework. The teacher will need to specifically explain how to use Coursesites before the lesson can be given. The audience also consists of students with IEP/504. Therefore, the ADA compliance will be followed so all learners have a fair opportunity to learn.

Design Phase: To effectively design the presentation, a storyboard was created. The storyboard allows the teacher to ensure the lesson will be interactive and engaging for students. The storyboard also allows the teacher to know exactly what the students will be quizzed on. Within the presentation, many design considerations will be followed. The first consider will be that the lesson will be used for years to come. Therefore, the lesson will not include any specific dates or temporary information. Another design consideration will be that the learning will be presented to students in segments. The students will be asked various questions to check for understand within the lesson. This will help break the learning up and make sure students understand what is being taught. Lastly, the lesson will support asynchronous learning. The students will use the lesson as a homework assignment to do outside of classroom time. This will help students understand what is being taught and give students a chance to ask the teacher about anything they did not understand during the class time. The lesson will also include Mayer’s 13 principals. The first principal that will be addressed is the signaling principal. The signaling principal says to bold or highlight words that need to stand out from the rest. Also, the coherence principal will be used. The coherence principal says to keep things as simple as possible and exclude any extraneous material. Lastly, the personalization principal will be in

effect. This principal says that students will learn better when the information is phrased in conversational tone. The game created will help students retain and understand vocabulary definitions. Often, students learn vocabulary by saying the word and definition over and over. The vocabulary words never make it to their long-term memory. Instead, students keep the words in their working memory, take a quiz, and forget the words. Allowing students to practice vocabulary using games will hopefully increase their knowledge of the words. The games are both engaging and interesting, and students are more likely to remember by playing a game. The game will ask students about definitions, synonyms, and putting words in a sentence. By doing this, students will be able to truly understand the definition of certain words. The game also builds on difficulty as the student answers the questions. The first round, the students will be asked to find the definition of the word. In the second round, the students will be asked to fill in the blanks of a sentence with the correct vocab word. In the third round, the students will be asked to analyze synonyms and antonyms of words. Therefore, this will support learning all levels of learning. The students will be able to truly demonstrate their knowledge of vocab words by exploring the different stages of questions.

Develop Phase: To effectively develop the lesson plan, a story board was created. The story board allows the teacher to ensure that the directions and questions are clear for the learner. For example, the teacher made sure the questions were in conversational tone. Instead of the teacher saying, “I want you to answer the questions” the teacher will say, “You will”. This helps the students feel that the teacher is talking directly to them. Since this is an asynchronous lesson, it is important that the students feel the same as they would in the classroom. The teacher also made sure that the questions were easy to understand but still in depth with what they were asking. The directions are kept simple and easy so all level of students can understand what is being asked of them.

Evaluate Phase: Discuss/review how you will evaluate the effectiveness of the multimedia product you create (you can talk about the peer reviews here, though more expanded testing of the final product should also be noted – who, what, where will you get that testing done? IMPORTANT: consider using a tool that lets you easily make quick edits and changes through the multimedia product. So, for example, if you make one long video, then at the end, if you want to adjust just one portion of it you have to redo the entire thing. Instead, tools that break it down into segments and pages, means you only have to redo that one page if you need to make a change or update.

Summary Multimedia tools are beneficial for the learning process. With technology, teachers need to ensure that they are using it to benefit student learning. Technology should be interactive and

Running Head: Interactive Multimedia Game

engaging to meet the needs and standards of students. When using technology in the classroom, there are many design considerations teachers much follow. All educators should know about the technology available to them and how to effectively use is.
