FROM FR. FRAN
A New Liturgical Season
With this weekend our
liturgical calendar turns to
Ordinary Time. Liturgical colors
change from the white and gold
of Christmas to green, which we
haven’t seen since November.
During this eight week period,
which will end with Ash Wednesday on March 1st, the
church doesn’t celebrate any particular aspect of
Christ’s life ( e.g. his birth at Christmas, his
resurrection during the Easter Season), rather, we will
view the many different aspects of his ministry in the
gospel readings for the season. You will also notice
that our musical selections for the parts of the mass
will change. We do this seasonally to mark the
different character of each liturgical season.
A New Flu Season
There’s no getting around it. Lots of folks are
down with all kinds of colds and the flu at this time of
year. We will continue to distribute the cup at
communion time during the flu season. Common
sense tells us to refrain from drinking from the cup
when we are ill. A bow of reverence as you pass the
cup would be very appropriate if you are abstaining.
Also, remember that for the sign of peace, any gesture
(i.e. head bow, smile) is appropriate while you are ill.
Please know that our ministers of the Eucharist are
careful to wash their hands as they prepare the bread
and wine before Mass. They also use an antibacterial
gel before communion. Needless to say, our weekly
Mass obligation takes back seat to our physical health,
so if you are ill, don’t let any Catholic guilt get to you;
stay home and rest up.
Unfortunately, I rarely have the option to stay home
when I’m ill. It is very difficult these days to find a
priest to fill in. So, as you may have noticed, while
I’ve been sick, I have refrained from distributing
communion and from shaking hands after Mass.
Thanks for your concern and patience as my lost voice
is finding its way back home!
Let it Snow?
Last Saturday’s snowstorm proved a tough call.
We went ahead with the 4 PM Mass and had a nice
celebration with about 35 worshipers. I try to make a
decision on cancelling Mass at about an hour before
start time. This has to do with whether or not the
parking lot and sidewalks have been cleared. The two
key places to learn of a Mass cancellation due to snow
are the parish website and the parish phone.
If you are scheduled to serve in a liturgical ministry
please do not feel obligated to make it to Mass during
a snowstorm. Your safety is the number one priority!

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL JANUARY MEETINGS
The St. Matthias conference of St. Vincent De Paul will hold its next meeting on
Wednesday, January 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall. This will be a very informative
meeting as we welcome a member from the Immaculate Conception conference who will help
us start formulating the procedures and protocols for this new conference.
If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to be involved, please contact the parish
office. This is an exciting time for our parish. Please pray that the Holy Spirit guide this new
conference in its mission to help those in need.
SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

ST. MATTHIAS PARISH SURVEY
The parish is continuing the collection of a brief survey
giving you the chance to let us know how we are doing in the
many areas of parish life.
Survey forms may be found on-line on our website:
www.stmatthiasparish.com/parish-survey as well as hard
copies at the entrances to the church.
Please take a moment to complete the survey. You may
drop the form into the collection baskets, mail it to the parish
office or stop by during office hours and say hello to the
parish team.
Thank you in advance for helping the parish serve you
and your neighbors in the best way possible.

CUPBOARD COLLECTION
This weekend January 14 and 15, collection bins will be
placed at the church entrances for food donations to the
Marlborough Community Cupboard. Non-perishable meals
such as soups, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and boxed meals
(hamburger helper, macaroni and cheese, etc.) are great
options in the winter months. Please give generously.
Thank you.
You are encouraged to pray these readings at home during
the week as you reflect on this Sunday’s Word and prepare
to celebrate next week’s Eucharist.

Thank you! Thank you to all who braved the
snowy weekend to help make the
Epiphany Breakfast a very pleasant way
to end the Christmas season with our Faith community. It
takes lots of help for an event like this with set-up, baking
or cooking and clean-up. There were many who were on
hand to help, but I especially would like to thank the
following: the Adelman Family, Donna Baldiserri, Diane
Balinksi, Gillian Campbell, Kim Coletti, Dale and Sue
Dolesh, Leslie Gannon, Diane and Dave Giugno, Jeanine,
Emily and Lily Hinterneder, Chris, Elise and Megan Lowe,
Mary Ann Mauro, Maria Mendez, Jackie Tolan, and

HOUSEKEEPING REMINDER
As a reminder to our many families as we join together in
Celebration of the Eucharist, please be sure that an adult
family member or guardian accompanies your child(ren) to
the restrooms, other areas of the church and throughout the
parish hall. This is for the safety of all.
Additionally, we kindly request that you take a moment to
silence your cell phones before mass so that everyone may
enjoy the Eucharistic Celebration.
