    THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGEThe Golden Gate Bridge is a well-recognized landmark in the United States. Itspans the Golden Gate Strait - a mile-widestretch of water that connects the SanFrancisco Bay to the Pacific cean. TheGolden Gate Bridge itself connects the cityof San Francisco with !arin "o#nty on theother side of the Strait. The Golden GateBridge is one of the most $ea#tif#l $ridgesin the world. It is also one of the tallest.

    The idea for a $ridge across the strait had $een aro#nd for many years% $eca#se San Francisco s#ffered from its isolated location.The only practical way to get across the San Francisco Bay was to take a ferry. Planningfor the Golden Gate Bridge $egan in &'&(% $#t the design #nderwent many changes

    $efore constr#ction finally started in &')). *oseph Stra#ss was the chief engineer incharge of the $ridge pro+ect. ,owe er% he had little e perience with the constr#ction ofs#spension $ridges. For this reason% other engineers% architects% and designers made italcontri$#tions to the design and constr#ction of the $ridge.

    $#ilt. There are strong c#rrents and hea y winds on the $ridge site% which madeconstr#ction dangero#s. The constr#ction of the $ridge finally $egan in &')). Theconstr#ction work set new standards for safety 2 workers were among the first re3#ired towear hard hats% and an inno ati e safety net sa ed the li es of nineteen men while the

    $ridge was $#ilt. The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in &')4% when the $ridgeopened to pedestrians. 5It was opened to cars one year later.6
