Kim graduated from IEC Level 5 in the Fall 2013 semester. Now, she is a graduate student in the Spe-cial Education Department. Kim said that joining the IEC was a great choice for her, and she explained that by giving three reasons. The most important reason for her is that the IEC program helped to improve her academ-ic English skills. For example, she had never used “APA” style in her country before she studied it in the IEC. However, the IEC teachers guided her in how to write a research paper based on APA formatting, which can be really important in graduate programs. Secondly, she really enjoyed a variety of cultural trip activities, such as the Haunted House. Lastly, she had the opportunity to make new friends with people from different cultural back-grounds. She said that interacting with international friends was one of her most valuable experiences from the IEC program. To end the interview, she gave some suggestions to current IEC students: “Enjoy every moment of your journey. Now it’s time to enjoy campus life at SCSU with snow and super-cold weather in Minnesota!”

An Interview with IEC Graduate Hasna’a Hasna’a is a Business and Human Resources undergardute student at SCSU from Saudi Arabia. She graduated from the IEC in the Summer of 2014 after spending three semesters studying English at the IEC. She said the IEC was really helpful for her. It helped her to learn alot of new words, especially in the vocabulary class which to her was the most helpful class. Hasna’a said that to improve her English she tries to communicate with many native speakers, and watch a lot of movies. Her advice to the current IEC students, or to anyone else who wants to improve his/her English, is to practice and keep practicing your English. Now, she has Math and ESL classes, and they are very easy if you study very hard. When I asked her about the biggest differences between SCSU and the IEC, she said that at SCSU you can regulate your time as you want to, whereas in the IEC you have a standard set schedule that you have to follow whether you like it or not. And about the teachers in both places? Hasna’a says they are both really good. The only difficulty that she has found so far is that she is having is to live without her family! Her future plans are to finish her education and undergraduate degree.

An Interview with IEC Graduate Zainab Zainab Alasker is one of the IEC Alumni from Saudi Arabia. Zainab graduated from the IEC in the sum-mer of 2014. She spent three semesters studying English in the IEC. Zainab has decided to pursue her studying, and major in Biomedical Science. Now, she is taking SCSU classes like Math, African Studies, ESL Listening & Speaking, ESL Reading & Writing, and Philosophy. And all of them are easy she says. I asked her about the differences she sees between the IEC and SCSU and she said that she thinks it is easier to get an A in the IEC because at SCSU you have to work very very hard to get that A grade. Also, the IEC teachers are so cooperative and helpful, just like SCSU professors. SCSU professors though are so harsh in grad-ing you and you must respect the class time, you have to be in class on time, and if you are late that means you are absent; and whenever the homework due it is due, with no extension and no exceptions. In other words, she finds the IEC teachers to be more friendly and understanding! I also asked her about any difficulties that she is facing at SCSU and her answer was THE language! She gave an example, “In the math class, I know everything because I took it in high school, but it was in Arabic. Now, I am having it in English, so it was so difficult in the beginning, but now it is easy for me.” Zainab went on to say, “the IEC was very helpful for me. My language improved a lot. Before I started studying in the IEC, I could not speak in front of anyone, but now I can speak and write comfortably and more confidently. The vocabulary and grammar classes were the most helpful classes in the IEC. They helped me learn new vocabulary that helped me speak and write correctly.” She also added that, to improve her English she tries to have friends who are non-Arabic speakers, so she gets a chance to speak in English with them most of the time. Also in her apartment she speaks English with her roommate and her brothers. Zainab’s advice to everyone who really wants to improve his/her English is to speak English all the time, so that you can understand and succeed in SCSU classes. When I asked about her future plans she said she is not thinking about the future now, all she is thinking about is how to focus on her classes; and after she finishes her studying she will think about the next thing that she is going to do in the future. Lastly, she says, “English is fun, and there are lots of people who want to learn English, but they cannot be here to do so. Also, your parents trust in you and bring you here, so don’t disappoint them please and work very hard to succeed.”

An Interview with a Gazi University Visiting Professor I interviewed Sultan who came from Turkey for a scholar exchange program. She is an associate professor in the Nursing Department at Gazi University in Ankara,Turkey. She is a hard working and responsible person. She said that her biggest strength was to get things done once she has started. She likes to learn new things and she is good at doing research. Her career goal is to write a book about how to research things effec-tively for college students. Sometimes, she has difficulties in controlling her emotions. Whenever these challenges come up to her, she holds her breaths and uses simple body massages by tapping her forehead lightly. She would like to work with a team because she can share ideas with others and have more effective plans, creative thoughts, and fresh energy to move forward. To have a good teamwork, she added that collegues should be well-disciplined, responsible and cooperative. Her hobby is to play table tennis and go to the theater with her friends. The best quote that influences her life and work is: “Winners are the people who are struggling.”

Check Out What Current IEC Student Marcella is

Doing to Help out Students!

Marcela is a student in IEC, Level 2 and she came up with an useful idea for students to help them buy, sell, rent, or offer products or service on campus. She is from Goiania, Goias, Brazil. Her major is Automation and Control Engineering. She came here in a program offered by the Brazilian government to do one year of experi-ence in undergraduate classes in the USA. Marcela and her boyfriend Murillo are interested in entrepreneurship and startups. Murillo explained that “A startup company or just “startup” is a company, a partnership or temporary organization designed to develop innovative products (in most cases) to solve certain problems. The core idea is to search, find, and build a company using a repeatable and scalable business model. It’s a common “mundial” or world-wide business culture, strong at Silicon Valley, for example. To illustrate, Dropbox, Kahoot, Uber, and Airb-nb are examples of startups.” Murillo majors in Computer Engineering and he owns a software company in Goiania. He is in Brazil today. He told me that both Marcela and he used to study together about entrepreneurship and Startups. And now with Marcela studying abroad, he wanted to find a way to keep working with her. Several ideas came up, but the first project that appeared was a problem faced by students who didn’t have a smartphones and couldn’t follow the schedule of the metro bus service using their common phones. The idea was to create a way to allow students to access the bus schedule using a normal phone (sending and receive the information through SMS). This project failed because buses in Saint Cloud have only the letter T and a company made number, making it difficult identify each bus. So creating a system that would work would be difficult. Furthermore, the number of people that might access the system was too small, since most people in the US use their own cars for transportation. The idea for the website StudentsHub (www.studentshub.us) first came when Marcela started to miss Bra-zilian food, but she couldn’t find a Brazilian restaurant in Saint Cloud. She decided to cook, but she didn’t have any pans. She asked her dorm for some pans but there were none available. So, Marcela faced a problem and she was curious to know if other students had the same problem. Murillo and Marcela started to ask students if they were also facing difficulties. Murillo talked with some friends via Google Hangout who are students at Arizona Uni-versity and Syracuse University, their answers were the same. It was very difficult to sell unused stuff, buy used stuff, or rent certain goods. Marcela heard a story about a person that graduated last year who needed to leave all of the stuff that she bought here, like her fridge. Students, especially international students, might not need winter accessories in their home countries, and it is not possible to cheaply store or sell their fridge or pans when they go back home. There was a problem and there was evidence that this problem was faced by others. So Murillo and Marcela decided to create a website to help students sell, buy, or rent products. It would be cheaper, safer, and exclusively to students on the same cam-puses. Murillo and Marcela created the website, called Students Hub three weeks ago and they are already in the third version; improving the website to better correspond to the users needs. The website is easy to use. You regis-ter your name, your university email, and upload a picture of the product with some information. To this project they didn’t invest that much money, only time and all the services are free. Murillo devel-oped the program and the website using the server from his company. The first version was created in 3 days and some of the IEC teachers helped with the english corrections. In the second version, they put rules as to what was not allowed to be added in the website, suggestions for the arrangements being in public places and they also rec-ommend to users not to put cell phone numbers if they don’t want the number being public. The third version has increased the security for the users because the person who is interested in a product writes to the person who is selling, but only via the website. No personal information is shown. The advertiser receives the message sent by the student interested in the product and gets to decide if they want to continue the deal or not. The obstacles now for Marcela and Murillo is spreading information about the website to all university students and finding support to advertise the website on the radio or the businesses on campus. Their next goal is to make the website popular and useful for students. They have plans to expand the idea for other universities, but now the big deal for the couple is to develop the idea at St. Cloud State and then expand it to other universities. They also have a goal now to help develop the startup/entrepreneurship culture between the students at St. Cloud State. They think it stimulates the challenge to develop an idea or create a product or service with high potential. With this objective, they are searching for students interested in startups/entrepreneurship just to talk and trade experiences about business, marketing and technology. All this while still attending the IEC and earning their own undergraduate degrees!

A Look at the Applied Economics Masters Program

from IEC Graduate Student Donald Hafing Donald Hafing is an Applied Economics graduate student from Burkina Faso. His undergraduate major is Macroeconomics and Development Management. His ambition to have a good job makes him thinking to get the MBA as well. So he can has two semesters degree in the same time. Donald spent two semesters studying in the IEC starting in the Spring 2014 and ending in the summer ses-sion 2014. Donald said that the IEC helped him a lot to improve his English, but he still struggle with the speak-ing other than that he is fine. This difficulty pushes him to try improving that by trying to speak to the native speakers whom he works with at (WOW restaurant) in the campus. And he is also thinking about taking ESL classes in order to help him in the speaking. Donald said that the IEC gave him all the basic that he needs to succeed in grad school. Also, he said it is not difficult just you need to work very hard and follow your teachers instructions in addition to doing your home-work. Donald advices everyone thinking to go to grad school to take Level 5 in the IEC because it is the most helpful class for him especially the writing class that helped him a lot, but he said in his opinion all the Level 5 classes contribute together and give basics for the writing class. Also he said try to interact as much as you can with native speakers in order to improve your English. Furthermore, Mr., Hafing advices’ to the IEC students who are thinking about going to grad school to not wait until you finish Level 5 to finish your paperwork and to apply to it because the big difficulty the he had is not the grad school, but getting to grad school. Speaking about the GRE he said it was not so difficult and he has prepared for it 2 weeks. I asked Mr. Hafing about the difference between the IEC class environment and the grad school classes, he said that the teachers are the same as nice as the IEC teachers, but the students are different. He illustrate that by saying the student in the grad school working by themselves and it is kind of rare to talk or communicate with them, he said: maybe because my classes almost math so we don`t need to communicate. He just has friend from the same country as him in the program. Donald said that he was surprised by the education system in the US because he did not use to go to the classroom and have quizzes, but here he obligated to do so. Donald tried to get work study in the office of the IEC, but there was nothing available; he still hopes to get them by the next semester. At the end he said that the IEC is doing well and encourage the stuff to keep going.

Brasil x America - A Personal Reflection When I was young, I never thought I would travel first to USA than to Europe. Life is always surprising us. To come to USA, I needed to pay for a visa, pass through two interviews and collect all kinds of papers to prove that I had enough money to

travel, and had reasons to go back to my country after some days of vacation. But, it was worth it. I arrived for Christmas, and I thought I was inside a movie. We don’t have snow in Brasil, and December is very hot, it is our summer. Santa Claus wears shorts and sunglasses there. After a couple of days here, I realized that Americans were not very cold like I thought before. They were friendly, and they really like Christmas. All cars, stores and houses play Christmas songs. On Christmas day, after church, we spent hours just to open a few gifts. One person opens one gift while the others watch. Then, the person shows the gift to everyone. And, another person open a new gift, and this goes until all the gifts have been opened. Well in Brasil…this is a little different. Christmas night, after church, everybody exchanges gifts and shows them to everybody at the same time. After a general thank you, we go back to the party. My first long drive in the USA was “dangerous.” The roads were so good that it could have made me sleepy. There was no excitement like we have driving in Brasil. There, you never feel sleepy because you can find one hole or a thousand holes in the roads. Usually there is only a single lane, which demands your constant attention for passing. The problem in the U.S. besides being sleepy, was that any time we stopped to rest or eat, the options were Cheetos, microwave hamburgers, and pop. After 10 hours, I was begging for some bread and butter, good coffee, pao de queijo, delicious cheese bread, or fresh squeezed orange juice. All these things we can find anywhere in Brasil. I know, I could had some coffee, but what you don’t understand here is that coffee in the USA is com-pletely different than in Brasil. I used to watch movies, Hollywood movies, where you see Americans always with huge cups of coffee. And I thought: “Wow, they really like coffee.” But, the first time I had coffee in the USA I noticed that what you drink here is known as “tea” to us in Brasil. I think our small cup of coffee has the same amount of the powder coffee as your big cup. The difference is that in the USA they put in much more water. Walking around, I noticed how the houses were well taken care of, parks and streets were clean, and the public playgrounds were looking well maintained. This is not a reality in Brasil. Streets are dirty with trash and playgrounds have been vandalized. We have big walls to protect the houses even in small cities, and there is a high rate of crime. If you forget a backpack at the airport here, SWAT appears thinking that it could be a bomb, but in Brasil, the backpack disappears instantly because somebody stole it. Brazilians are also very friendly and we love people from other countries, maybe, because we are very di-verse, we are all mixed. We have in our blood Native Indians, Americans, Africans, Europeans, and Asians. We always try to speak English or other languages. We love to learn something about other countries. We make the conversations happen even with miming. We love to teach bad words to “gringos,” people from other countries, and we make them use it without knowing the real meaning of the word. We try to teach them Samba and we try to make them love Carnival and football (soccer). We want introduce them all the good beaches and restaraunts for good food and drinks, as well as invite them to our parties and barbecues. The way how we celebrate barbecue is also something very different than here. We put the meat, sausage, and chicken in a stew in small pieces, and everybody goes there and takes one piece. This happens all day, eating and drinking fruit punches with friends and family. Fresh food and fruit are common in Brasil. People normally cook themselves, or we have a lot of options for going to a restaurant serving homemade and fresh food. When you check the menu for beverages, you can choose any kinds of fresh juice, even with frozen fruits. Here you have all kind of pops or juices in cans. People enjoy giving hugs and kisses in Brasil and we don’t have so many rules. Maybe that’s the reason wy people gen-erally think of Brazilians as being “easy going”, we have fewer inhibitions for taking risks and enjoying new and exciting things. Dating an American for five years, I have noticed all these differences, including the risk of being in an ac-cident. In Brasil, you have public health but you can wait in a big line to being seen by a doctor. At the same time, if you need to be rescue because you got lost in the forest or you got a bite from a poison snake, you will have a helicopter to rescue you without receiving a big bill days later. I have people that I love here and in Brasil. I love my country, but I have learned to love the USA too. Every day I learn new differences between both countries, but what I know is that nothing is perfect and nothing is only bad. Everything depends on the way you look at it.

Mar7aba! Keef al7al? What is this? Is that a typo error? Maybe! Or is this another language?? It’s possible!

This is not a typo error nether another language! This is a mixed language emerge in Saudi Arabia and some other Arabic countries. This mixed language called (Arabnglish) = (Arabic+English). When the smart phones appears Arabic people were curious about it and so exited but unfortunately it was in English with an English keyboard!

So do you think that is going to prevent the Arabic people from using these phones! The answer is NO!

They invented this mixed language to meet their needs so the use the English letters to represent an Arabic speech. Since the English doesn’t have all the Arabic letters sound they recourse by the English numbers which look like any letters in Arabic that doesn’t have the same sounds in English. So by this way they are able to chat, text, and communicate.

This language was a topic of conflict in the Arabic linguistics and the teenagers who are usually use it. The parents at the beginning they don`t know anything about this language till the conflict started. Many parents encourage their children to not use this language because they are afraid that the Arabic is going to die if they keep using this one. Now, many people use it less than before whereas some children still use it as much as before. Now, this called “Arabic chat alphabet”

If you tried to read it you sound like speaking in Arabic, but if you look at it “it is English” which is really funny and trick many English speakers as well as Arabic speakers. Here is a key for the Arabic chat alphabet it might help you if you face that one day!

esUse Your Best Judgment A Short Story Written By Arthur Nett

What have I done so far? In the first year in college, I was so innocent to perceive a man to be my life and business partner. And in the second year, I was too busy catching up the all the American college courses to go out with any guys. Last year, I just started searching for the right guy for my fancy life in my country when I go back home after graduation. I think I have found a guy who has a nice figure and approachable personality in the cafe-teria. Whenever I encounter him there, he kindly says hello and has a cute and warm, even sexy smile on his face. Two weeks before Halloween, I got fabulous news from one of my friends that he would show up the Halloween party organized by Cynthia, who is one of my classmates. This Halloween might be the last chance for me to pick someone. Actually I had a chance to pick nice guy last Halloween, but what happened on that party day? At that time, I should have made it. But I had a fever and I was so sick that I couldn’t even sit up. I missed the big chance! I have been waiting for this Halloween party since last year. How much have I been preparing for this party and how many times have I had to lie to my parents that I was going out with a guy? So, I pledge to myself, I will pick an incredible guy today. For this Halloween, I am wearing a Lady Justice costume, and I have been waiting for the important guys on the couch inside of my friend’s huge house because I arrived here a bit earlier than the appointed time. I guess my facial expression probably looks very uncomfortable because I am considering my mission, given to me by her parents, which was to hunt for a future husband. I am sitting on the couch very charmingly and neatly to illustrate my attractiveness to prospective husbands. But there was still 30 minutes more until my friends will come, so I am immersed again in a valuable ad-vice that I learned from my mother, Papaya. My mother was a conservative woman who tended to excel at house-work and support her husband, my father. Since I was a young girl, Papaya taught me about how to distinguish the best suitable man. She advised, “Do not judge a man’s appearance, such as his face or clothing, but you should observe carefully how gentle the man’s mouth is and how caring the man’s behaviors are.” After thinking about what mother had taught me, I regained my composure. This is because today is Halloween, so nobody is wearing his or her regular clothes. Instead they are wearing costumes and masks; therefore, I do not need to be distracted by their faces, but just can simply observe their behaviors. At an appointed time, many guys who could be my prospective husband are arriving! Usually I love and en-joy Halloween, but this time is even more special. I must be pretty and smart. I must get a gorgeous man with this amazing costume of Lady Justice. But inside of me, I feel that I am kind of a servant because I need to do some-thing that my parents actually want. That was I should be met with the society’s demands of keeping my heritage. I think that from this couch I can see all the “candidates” were arriving. There are some ghosts, skeletons, scarecrows…but no one makes me excited. Hum, Waldo, I like. But this costume could be a puzzle, mysterious, and I need safety. The Flash looks good, but no. It could be fast and short relationship. Peter Pan has a beautiful smile! Yes, but I don’t need now an immature man, a child to take care of. Spiderman is my favorite superhero, but I don’t want him neither to jump on decisions nor to wear incredibly skinny spider outfit during our date. Wow, a hockey player! At this moment, I see a hockey player. I instinctually feel that he is the one whom I have usually met in the cafeteria. Unlike other guys, the hockey player was coming over to me. My heartbeat is getting faster and faster. He stands in front of me, and he asks me “Let me ask you a question,” and I reply with a trem-bling mind, “Yes?” Then he says, “I think it is not just first time meeting you right?” I am really surprised that he remembers me. And I answer, “Maybe.” And he responds, “I have been curious about you.” By the time I hear that, it sounds like my heart has stopped, and I reply with a trembling lip, “Oh, really? I wanted too.” Then, we have a good conversation for about 20 minutes. In the meantime, I realize that his mouth was so soft like what my mother said, and what he is doing to me is exactly same as what my mother advised me. After our conversation, we go to a group of the friends, and the time goes quickly until midnight. At midnight, most of them become couples. Of course, my partner is him, and before the morning turns up, we make sure our love is enthusiastically mutual.----------------------------- Now it is November 1st. Like other routine days, I go to the café after my class with having expectations to face him. As I long, he comes up through main door of the café, and I say “Hi,” with smiling eyes, but he pass-es me coldly without any answer. He treats me like a stranger. I am tremendously hurt, and run out of the café. Afterward, I look up who he is by asking around. I cannot find anything about him, but I get the news, and I am shocked. This is because the young man died a week ago by the car accident…so, who was it…who was it…who did I meet on Halloween and today in the café?

An Interview About Local Recreation

Michelle Callahan a current student here at Saint Cloud State intends to graduate in Summer 2015 from the Kinesiology Department with a bachelors degree in Recreation & Sports Management. This major allows the students connect sport, recreation and business. Michelle is interested on the events because in this area she can use her creativity. Her project is work with the smaller companies to help them archive supporting from the city department. She works at Whitney Center, connected with Barden Park (near Saint Cloud Technical College). For people from other cities or especially from other countries, she recommends to look on the websites http://www.ci.stcloud.mn.us/ (City of St. Cloud website) and http://tinyurl.com/lskd72b (Community Education website). Both sites offer different activities for all ages and free events. Other option is the Department Sport Facilities and Campus Recreation at St. Cloud State University (www.stcloudstate.edu/campusrec/default.asp). Campus Recreation offers activities on campus and they are also responsible for fitness on campus. Generally sports events are free with student ID. The first week of the semester all fitness classes are free! if you decide to wait a little bit you can save a lot of money and sign up for the fitness program near the middle of the semester, the enrollment price is cut in half! SCSU’s Outdoor Endeavors offers some trips, adventures and they have a rental service to supply your need on equipments (www.stcloudstate.edu/campusrec/outdoorendeavors/default.asp). Michelle told me that all the new students should explore the parks in Saint Cloud. At Whitney Recre-ation Center, for instance, you can find an indoor walking track. It is handicap accessible, the structure attends all the disabilities needs. Michelle advises to us to keep checking for updates on parks websites or the ones suggested above because they usually promote interesting and free events, they are open for all people. Last year, she pro-moted a Pumpkinfest at the nearby Lake George Municipal to celebrate Halloween. This event was a success and it was designed to the little kids. There were a movie in the dark, popcorns and of course pumpkins. It was a great time for all families. This year, however, she promoted an event designed to adults, Brewing up a better cup. On this event, she as a barista also, taught all aspects of tea, coffee, their benefits and the best part, how to prepare a good coffee/tea. She highlights that all events were free for the community. More classes like this are located here: http://tinyurl.com/ldudwz7. A quick 5 block walk from the SCSU campus is Lake George, Michelle mentioned where we can run, walk, fishing, canoeing, rollerblading or during winter ice skating. Award winning flowers at Munsinger Clemens Garden, a 10 minute walk across the bridge over the river Mississippi, is a delightful place during fall, spring and summer. It is a good place to take great pictures, enjoy concerts or the annual art fair which is all free of charge. Other park around the campus is Riverside Park. This park is ADA accessible, offers cross country, ski trails, the popular disc golf, one of a kind sliding hill, splash pad, volleyball court and brand new tennis court. Not in Saint Cloud, but in the cities neighborhood, we have Quarry Park and Nature Preserve where is possible for swimming hole, mountain biking, scuba diving and rock climbing . Pine Ridge Golf Course, located in Sartell, offer discount to college students. Also, Saint John’s Abbey Arboretum is a very beautiful place and offers several activities (www.csbsju.edu/outdooru/abbeyarboretum). Michelle suggested two apps that she used every time she was on campus. Download St.Cloud State Uni-versity. This app uses your GPS location and tells you exactly were you are on campus so you can find your way from class to class. Just click on “map” and it will find you if on campus grounds. You can also look for buildings by clicking “stops” then finding building from there! Michelle used this everyday as a freshman to find her classes on time. If leisure time is what you have the Times2go App can help us freshman or internationals students to find activities in and around the Saint Cloud area and to find some entertainment.
